I bought Fight Songs on a whim, and I like it a lot. What other albums of theirs, or other artists, would be worth checking out?

I like Too Far to Care a lot myself; I thought Satellite Rides seemed a little too...I don't know, scrubbed clean, maybe, though it has some good stuff on it.

since you've started with what is arguably their weakest album, I'd say any of the others. They've never really put out a bad CD.
FYI - you can hear three songs from their upcoming release at www.old97s.com

Wreck Your Life is awesome, it's the first CD of theirs I picked up and while I like them all it's still my fave. More "country" twang to it than their poppier later work. Great songwriting, too.
How can you top a line like --
"She lived in Berkeley 'til the earthquake shook her loose
Now she's in Texas, where nothing ever moves"
:D

I'm like you... I was introduced to the band through the Fight Songs, which I think is great... and I don't like Satellite Rides (too much of it is too slow, too polished for my tastes). If you do get Satellite Rides, try to get a copy with the live bonus disc, which has some older stuff and which I enjoy much more than the album proper. I can't recommend older stuff because I haven't made my way through that part of the catelog.

The Old 97's are one of my favorite bands, and Too Far to Care is one of my favorite all-time albums...the one where they got everything right. IMO, Fight Songs is the worst of the lot...still good but missing something.
