In discussing "Cop Land" in DVD Talk someone had mentioned it had the best cast in movie history. I don't think so, I just think it was a couple Oscar caliber and mediocre players who gelled in an ensemble due to great script and direction.
But that lead to an interesting topic: what movie do you think has the best cast in movie history?
Name the movie and if you want list the cast.

3 right off the top of my head, I'm sure many more will mention them, especially regarding their disappointment with the films despite their strengths:
Around the World in 80 Days- quite possibly the worst Best Picture winner ever. It's still duking it out with The Greatest Show on Earth for the title. Still, it's fun spotting all of the superstars.
Mars Attacks!- Nicholson, Brosnan, Close, De Vito, Bening, Short, Parker, Fox, Steiger, Portman, Black, Grier, Applegate, Jones. This cast is so great none of the first names are even needed, everyone knows exactly who these people are. Too bad Burton had to round up the greatest cast he will ever have for the laziest and most half-assed I'm-just-doin-this-shit-for-the-paycheck Film of his career.
True Romance- Pretty decent flick. Fantastic all-star cast. James Gandolfini. Patricia Arquette. Tom Sizemore. Chris Penn. Jack Black(again!). Samuel L. Jackson. Balki Bartokomous. Christopher Walken. Christian Slater. Brad Pitt. That funny white-guy that black filmmakers love to use.....Michael Rapaport. Val Kilmer. Gary Oldman. Dennis Hopper. The only thing cooler than this cast would be if Tarantino somehow jumped into a time-machine, bitch-slapped Tony Scott and took over the reins of this production with this cast and directed this movie with his own original script and original ending. All would be right with the world.

Heat had a personally satisfying one:
Al Pacino
Robert De Niro
Val Kilmer
Ashley Judd
Tom Sizemore
Jon Voight
Mykelti Williamson
Tom Noonan
Jeremy Piven
Natalie Portman
Henry Rollins
Ricky Harris (Stand up-comedian. Saw him live at Def Jam LA)
Amy Brenneman
Dennis Haysbert
Wes Studi
Tone Loc (One of the best voices ever)
Danny Trejo
Thomas Rosales Jr. (Familiar stunt man)
Ted Levine
Jerry Trimble (Kickboxer!)
William Fichtner
Hank Azaria
JFK is another favorite.

Depending on how generous you want to be with who is considered a cast member, I'd put Godfather II ahead of the Godfather -- you lose Brando but gain DeNiro. Assuming, of course, Jimmy Caan's one scene qualifies him as a cast member of Godfather II.
While it can't compare in absolute numbers, in terms of per capita star power, you can't beat Sleuth. There are six people listed in the opening credits. Two of them are Micahel Caine and Lawrence Olivier
and the other four are made up names to disguise the fact that Olivier and Caine are playing all the parts in the movie.
Plus, it was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

Mystic River came out on DVD yesterday. It has an outstanding cast of knowns and unknowns and it is a magnificient directorial job by Clint Eastwood. Any film with Laura Linney in it is bound to be above average.
Too bad that, on a moral level, it turns out to be the usual piece of crap gloryfying the criminal/organized crime/good old boys/guns and violence frame of mind of every second US film produced in the last 30 years and the victory of the "strong" (those who abuse) over the "weak" (those who are abused), with maybe a little extra amoral fascist machismo thrown in for good measure.:D

Great? You have listed 30 people who are uncredited and nobody has ever heard of. I don't think you have to list every single name in the movie. Just the major stars would suffice for the future.

Many of the bit parts (uncredited) of this film were played by great character actors (Moroni Olsen, George Zucco) without whose faces Hollywood movies could never have been successful or convincing. Others, like Ruth Hussey (The Philadelphia Story, The Uninvited), became stars in their own right.

Yes, but the problem here is that most of the "cast" listed had only bit parts/cameos. I think the OP was talking about the cast as in "major players". I wouldn't think cameos should count or you could add many lousy movies like this one to this list.

I'm deeply hurt by that statement. I thought Last Action Hero (besides having a dynamite cast) was a thoughtful and quite funny at times deconstruction of the action hero movie genre and clichés, with many rewarding moments. The reason it didn't make any money or win acclaim is that the viewing public wasn't ready for such a sincere stab at its own inconsistencies and superficiality.

When the stabs are just as superficial it makes the deconstruction rather fleeting, no? Really, Keaton's Sherlock Jr. does more in this vain, and that was in the infancy of the art-form! Hell, even Purple Rose of Cairo has a better grasp on the disparities between film- and real-worlds. Last Action Hero just plays them off for snickers and winks.
Sorry, don't want to turn this thread off topic but I wanted to respond.
As for one of the best casts in cinema history:
Rio Bravo (1958)
John Wayne
Dean Martin
Walter Brennen
Ricky Nelson

seconded, seems like it took too long for Altman to make it to the list! Pret a Porter is packed too.
Anyway, my vote goes for my favorite movie, BRAZIL. Not only a great cast, but a great cast creating great *characters* that amount to more than just glorified cameos:
Jonathan Pryce
Michael Palin
Ian Holm
Bob Hoskins
Katherine Helmond
Charles McKeown
Ian Richardson
Peter Vaughan
Jim Broadbent
EDIT: And Robert DeNiro, of course.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed Ian Holm more.
