Well, I read online somewhere that after six months the Xbox starts to freeze up. I thought this might be an old wife tail, but know that I have my Xbox for 6 months it has happened to me. After powering off and on all was okay. He are some questions I have:
Has this happen to anyone else here?
What causes the freeze? DVD drive?
What can I do to correct the problem? DVD cleaner?

Nothing at all to do with time. Freeze ups on consoles are almost exclusively due to poor programming of the software. Xbox and PS2 could have hardware related issues as well, but you'd have to have it happening with different games, and to test it out on games that are known to have little or no freeze problems.

You should make note of the game that it happens under and where it happens.
Also, make sure your Xbox is an open area where it can be ventilated properly.

Seriously, I think that your xbox is just over heating if you have it in a closed space and the fans aren't getting enought air.

I've heard that putting the xbox upside down in boiling water will fix the problem.

I encountered this problem as well. It first started happening when I played KOTOR, then my save files would be corrupted. I'd have to save any given point five or six times to guarantee at least one save would be good...and often none were.
I eventually had to have mine shipped back to get a completely new hard drive, etc. If I were you, I'd call the XBox people immediately and start a report file with them. If you do have to get it repaired, having some things on file as early as possible can really help.

It's a BAD Thomson DVD drive you probably have. Mine would freeze up every so often and I would get Dirty Disc Errors. Check and see if you have a Thomson Drive (there are pics of all 3 on the Internet)
Thomson is the worst drive in the XBOX....it has been well documented.

My KOTOR freezes every so often too. I just bought my XBOX last week. It has a samsung drive. So I hope it's just the game.

I think the phillips drive is better than the thomson, but you never know it seems like every machine is different. My brother has had a thomson drive since xbox came out and hasn't had a problem. I've had my thomson a year and it always freezes up.

I've owned a total of 7 xboxes. (ordered my eighth today,halo edition) I've had problems with both the phillips (1/2) and of course the (3/4) thomson drive.
My 1 xbox with the samsung (0/1) is good so far, but to be fair I rairly use it's drive compared to the others that have sufferded poor fate. You can buy replacement drives if you have to.

My XBOX was manufactured in May 2004. And I have a Philips drive. I thought most "new" xbox systems had Samsung drives. I'm starting to worry that mine won't last more than a year. :(

What manufacture date and which factory is the one with the Samsung Drive from?
The factory is the last 2 digits of the serial number. The manufacture date is in the following format: YYY-MM-DD.

I've had my Xbox for more than a year now and while I was playing Brute Force last week it froze in two different spots in the game. That's the only time this has ever happened. Not concerned about it.

I've had my Xbox about a year and a half. It only froze up a couple of times on me. I was playing Madden 2004 in Franchise Mode. I wrote to EA and they said if I had a Roster loaded and too many changes the software would not handle it. I deleted the Roster file and it never froze up again. I have a Thomson drive, by the way.

There is a way to tell by looking at the serial number which you can see thru the little window in the back of the box.

my xbox started sucking after about 3 months it still works, but it had the dirty disc errors every time I change a game, and sometimes when I don't. I have given up on new systems being reliable when they sell systems below cost they cut corners. I know personally only one person who doesn't have a problem with theres. I'm not biased I have gone through 2 ps2s and most my friends have had ps2 problems also. It is just something I have grown to live with. I have found on the internet via google searches ways to replace parts on your xbox.

Every X-Box my friends have owned (total of 4 boxes, one of my friends had to buy a replacement) has had freezing problems. 2 were thompson, 1 was phillips, 1 was samsung, doesn't matter which drive, they all have problems. All froze within 6 months. None of our Gamecube's have ever had a problem

Well, I've actually only owned 7 so far. I ordered the eighth but Best Buy renigged on me, I'm going out to buy the eighth tonight. And I don't actually have 7/8 in my possesion, only 3. The others I've given away or sold.
To answer your question: When the xbox came out it was an amazing deal as a PC. Even today it's a fair price, although the overall value has diminished quite a bit lately.
I use the xboxes for stand alone pc's, a hardware firewall, a media center, file server, and sometimes to even play games on. :) The units are perfect for running linux on, as it typically requires a lot less resources then windows.
Many of my friends are surprised I have so many xboxes because they know of my distaste for Microsoft and their monoplistic ways. But hell, if MS wants to sell hardware below cost that allows me to run linux and in a nice little box I'm all for it. (Although I think they may have turned that corner by now)
So yes at the end of they day MS can say they sold X # of consoles, but I always look forward to their quarterly report.
