What makes Salo so expensive and sought after?

ADMIN NOTE: Please remember the rules on threadcrapping before posting in this thread. This is not the thread to go on about how disgusting this movie is, and how all copies of it should be burned, and then all people who have watched it should be burned, etc. Thanks. - Static

I realize the obvious: supply and demand.

But I tried to do a search for a thread with a explanation on the demand on Salo, but couldn't find any.

Anybody care to share why this DVD is so rare and sought after, or at least provide a link?

"taboo" "forbidden" subject matter.
young teens supposedly being subjected to nasty and degrading activities (including as was alluded to - being forced to eat feces).

in reality the movie is just lame and unpleasant tripe.
i wouldn't pay $5 for it if it was in the bargin bin at BB

Oh, ok. Didn't know what "scat" was.

Did this disc get released like Ed Wood did, with a few copies going out? Or was it simply discontinued and its demand grew quickly?

The disc was only in production for a few months, and likely had a small production run to begin with (since demand was not expected to be high). So it's high price reflects its rarity (although the market is flooded with bootlegs).

Why did it go OOP so quickly? From the Criterion Forum FAQ:
Salo (it is presumed) was taken out of print at the request of the family of Pier Paolo Pasolini.
See also: The Salo Files (outdated info).

It was a regular release to the best of my knowledge and not widely known about so I don't think too many copies were available. I believe it came out in 1998. Once it went out of print and being that it was part of The Criterion Collection people decided that they just had to have it and the price quickly skyrocketed.

Sounds like a real sick movie, what was the inspiration behind making it?

it might be sick but Pasolini was a genius. not an easy film to watch, and not his best, but there are far worse films out there that don't attempt to "say" as much as Salo does.

from what i read criterion had slow sales and stopped production along with something from the Pasolini family asking, which I'm not sure why.

as a side note, there was a video store in Cincinnati that rented out an old VHS of the film and the owner was arrested on obscenity charges. it was tossed out, but this was just a few years ago. the article is posted in the film wing of my old school.

According to Peter Bondanella's excellent book, Italian Cinema: From Neorealism to the Present (3rd ed; 2002; p.294-5), Pasolini took the basis for his story from the novel 120 Days of Sodom, by the infamous Marquis de Sade. He added elements from Dante's Inferno, then transported the narrative to Italy in the 1940s, in the last days before the downfall of Musolini's Fascist government.

Bondanella's interpretation:
[The film] is a desperate and highly personal attack against what Pasolini had come to view as a society dominated by manipulative and sadistic power and organized around mindless consumption and exploitation.

1. It was intended for a very small niche audience, at a time when DVDs had first come out and hadn't yet reached the mainstream.

2. It is numbered as part of the Criterion Collection, and therefore once more people started collecting CCs, they wanted to have ALL of the numbers.

3. Morbid curiousity and the notoriety of the film drive others to desire it.

4. The fact that it is the highest selling OOP disc makes even more people to want it, for collectibility, or as an investment, etc.

If I had a DVD player at the time the DVD was released, I'd probably own the film right now.

(please don't criticize my taste in movies )

I think this movie is stupid....for instance...

This girl is walking around naked with food, guy sticks leg out and trips her, she falls to the ground, he bangs her in the anus,a guy watchs and fondles himself, gets up and goes over to them, pushes the girl away and starts doing the guy in the anus....what a great movie...burn all the copies of this horrible movie. I have no respect for this filmmaker or anyone that betaken a part in this film but thats mind opinion so deal with it..oh i forgot to mention they eat poop (fake) in the movie and force the women and me to eat it also....what a great dinner they had that day i bet.

As much as I don't like some movies, I would never make this statement for any movie, much less for one I have never seen.

But, back on topic... I agree with littlefuzzy

Interesting---you're expressing the same sort of Fascist attitude that Pasolini was criticizing in this film ...

I hope whichever company (Criterion or MGM or WaterBearer) does the next R1 release of Salò will include some good extra material to place it in context. I doubt we'll ever see a full audio commentary (given the film's extremely limited audience), but at least substantive text essays would be helpful.

The British Film Institute's BFI Film Classics series has released a short (95 page) book on Salò by Gary Indiana. Though I have not read it, the book comes highly recommended by critic Jonathan Rosenbaum. It's probably the best resource for someone who approaches this film as a work of art (rather than as a savvy investment, or as a gross-out for unsuspecting friends).

I won't argue that an understanding of Pasolini's motives, his politics, or his artistic methods will result in a profound love for this film, but it may help viewers appreciate it as something other than a "sick" or "horrible" movie.
