Rare must have DVDs?
I'm starting to get into actual rare DVD collecting, so what DVDs are must have collectables? The first one I'm looking for is the Silence of the Lambs Criterion, that should be a good one to get my semi-rare DVD collection started So what are some other semi-rare/rare or OOP must have DVDs?

Are you looking for rare movies you like or just for collecting purposes?
Check out this thread for a previous discussion. I would have to say Silence of the Lambs is a good place to start and a copy might still pop up at a used store. Also the price on eBay isn't too ridiculous (just make sure it's not a boot)

I'm looking for rare movies that are actually good movies too I looked up Salo on imdb and I don't think I would pay $1 for it, unless to resell it...
Thanks for the link to the other thread, that'll give me a good place to start

Do you mean actually rare, or just OOP?
SOTL CC is OOP, but is certainly not rare. It can be had rather inexpensively (and well be low MSRP) on eBay and in many used shops (from my experiences).
I would think rare would be DVDs that had a specifically small distribution or real LE status (like LSOH with the alternate ending).
Ed Wood would be another one that won't set you back too much (but is going for about double MSRP or more).
Other then that, you could try to start to tackle Disney, but that is a whole different ballgame.
Good luck!

I guess right now I'm looking for kind of hard to find DVDs that are worth watching too, not just to say I have it. For example, I loved SOTL and haven't bought the regular DVD release because I'd like to have the CC version since it has more of a resale value and is actually worth something(even if it is only $20). I saw LSOH on TV a few years ago and didn't really like it at all. If I bought it with the alternate ending then all it is is a DVD that would sit on my shelf that would never get watched. It seems like most of the really rare DVDs I wouldn't be interested in, so I guess I'm looking for good OOP DVDs that are semi hard to find.

Would the Seven Samurai Criterion be a good one to check out? I see it is rated #7 in the top 250 films on imdb and it does sound pretty interesting I hope it comes with english subtitles though... Any info on this?

Seven Samurai CC is not a rare disc yet (still in print) but is definitely worthy in one's collection. It does come with english subtitle since it is from Criterion.
Check out Hard Boiled and Killer from Criterion as well. They are both rare and good movies too.

There is a rare Seven Samurai CC that has a retoration doc. I think it was the very very first printing...even though the current release says "First Printing". You might want to keep an eye out for it on eBay (again, be careful there)
I'd second eau's recommendation for Hard Boiled and The Killer. Both are classic John Woo flicks.

Milestone's Norman McLaren: Collector's Edition is sort of hard to find, though to my knowledge, all you have to do to get it is buy it directly from their website. I don't know of any retailers that carry the set.
There's also the San Francisco Silent Film Festival DVD of the Chinese silent classic The Goddess...but I haven't heard anything about how well the disc holds up.

I'm really intrigued by The Killer and Hard Boiled. I understand that they're collectable DVDs, but are the films good? Is it possible to get these anywhere for a decent price? Any chance of a re-release soon?
Thanks.
Thanks.

yup. The average viewer will see a sick twisted film. The select few will see a beautiful film that deals with insanity and inhumane establishment in WWII time.
