That's some great artwork. I hope the Region 1 art is as nice.

I don't like the cover. To me, it seems like it might be giving part of the story away.

I thought Frank Darabont recorded a commentary track for this?

The story I read was that Morgan Freeman recorded a commentary track for the original DVD release but Frank Darabont nixed it because he felt the movie should speak for itself. It seems unlikely he would do a complete about-face.

That's unfortunate, as I really enjoy commentaries. I will eventually pick this up when it hits R1. It will be interesting to see the cover art.
Personally, I always prefer the original one sheet over any new exclusive to DVD art, but that is just me.

i'm pretty sure i've read interviews with Darabont where he said he'd do a commentary track for it..
anyway.. can't say i like the cover. the slipcase idea is nice but i don't think the tropical island thing works since it's only in the film for a minute. just doesn't feel like the film.
notice the "Usage: DVD Package/Art Prints". Let's hope its for DVD package... although it might just be for an insert. Also reported on The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#dallas).
Wow, if this is what a special edition is going to be then Warner Bros. just proved me wrong. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies and one of the first DVDs that I bought. I always said I would jump all over a special edition, but 1 documentary and some interviews are hardly worth the upgrade.

Agreed. Also the audio and video on the current DVD is excellent, especially for an older DVD release. So all they are offering is 1 documentary, interviews and that ugly cover?

Was the previous release anamorphic?
I'd still be in if it was a substantial documentary. At least it's not a "featurette".

Yep, it was anamorphic and looks spectacular. Holds up well against the newest transfer out today (okay, not like Master & Commander ;)),, but you get the idea. The 5.1 audio track is also very good. But, like you said, a substantial documentary would be great. Will have to wait and see.

I want the deleted scenes of Red on the outside that they showed on Showtime, introduced by Darabont.
I keep meaning to start a thread about Showtime's deleted scenes, from films including the aforementioned Shawshank, L.A. Story, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. They also showed the deleted scenes from T2, but those have been put on the film's DVD once or twice now.

The R2 covers look nice, but they just don't fit the feel of the film (even though they have some relevance to the story, and even spoil it a little).

I'm not a big fan of the coverart. It doesn't really represent the film as a whole. I wish they would use the original coverart of Tim Robbins lifting up his hands while in the rain. I have this poster hanging up in my room.

let us take a peek at the WB meeting for deciding the new cover of The Shawshank Redemption DVD.....
"okay, so we've got to think up a cover for this movie that takes place inside a decrepit old prison in Maine. any suggestions?"
"how about a tropical beach?"
"BRILLIANT! Make it happen!"

That art work doesn't do much for me. Struzan's drawing looks looks more at home in Reader's Digest or something (and I mean that in a good sense). As for the other ones -- what're they marketing, Corona? That scenery was only a minor, but important part of the film's climax, yet makes it's totally out of context.

The struzan one is a great piece of artwork. Just not right for a dvd cover. It would make a great insert though.
As for the other one with the slip cover. :yack:

Wonderful work but it doesnĄ¯t present the film as a whole. The significance of Pacific Ocean is not given until the very end. It ruins the starting or core atmosphere of the film: imprisonment, boundaries & corruption. It feels more like Cast Away. :D

The R2 cover reminds me of the commercials with the guys that throw their cell phones in the ocean.

Nice cover art, but not for this movie. Seriously, it totally sets the wrong tone.
As for the original movie poster with Robbins' arms up in the air, the problem with that was that it was so ambiuous. Combine that art with the title, and you still have no freakin' idea what the movie is about. I only went to see it after it was nominated for an Acadamy Award, but even as I was buying the movie ticket, I still had no clue what the movie was about.
However, in the end, it was on my list as one of my top 10 movies ever.
