Something that is truly gory and terrifying that can be had on DVD. I know it is said that Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" aka "Braindead" is considered one of the goriest, but that is more comedy horror. I am talking something that is real horror and scary and truly gory and all that, if such a DVD exists. Thanks in advance for suggestions...

Nekromantik is always good for a laugh...and a puke. films in the Guinea Pig series, like Flowers Of Flesh and Blood...are pretty cool. check out the Men Behind the Sun series too. Andreas Schnass directs some brutal gore...try The Violent Shit Trilogy. I just grabbed August Underground's Mordum a few weeks ago. this title has had problems crossing borders....it borders on snuff and is not for everyone.
go HERE (http://www.monstersatplay.com/review/dvd/a/mordum.php) for a write up of AUM.
Cannibal Holocaust..........get the R0 remastered 16.9 EC Entertainment release for the full uncut uncensored version of the film.

Rob Zombies "House of 1000 Corpse" was pretty gory and disturbing, can't wait for the Directors Uncut release to come out.
Dee Sniders "Strangeland" was another disturbing movie.
Must be some relation to Metal Music and Horror movies to make these singers put out these movies.

Gory and scary rarely go hand in hand, imho. The movies that are "truly" scary are the ones that are about atmosphere and tension, not severed limbs and sliced throats.

gut has a nice list, some <i>really</i> twisted shit in there...
Also agree with Julie to an extent on Cannibal Holocaust... Although, the most disturbing aspects of that film are the animal killings... Despite that, Holocaust is actually a pretty decent film, although some of the subject matter (rape and animal snuff) is a bit hard to sit through with a smile on your face... (pay attention to the last bit of the film if you've ever seen Blair Witch)
Maniac has a few good scenes, Savini's shotgun to the face scene is wicked. So-so, at best, film otherwise.
But a lot of the above (and the Holywood fare like Hellraiser, etc) fall under "goriest" and "shocking", not "horrifying"... My definition of "horror" is more psychological... Not sure what to add to the list in that regard... Maybe later.

another, more tame fave of mine is City of the Living Dead from Fulci. nice gore combined with spooky-ass atmosphere. in my book...it's a classic.
Gory and scary rarely go hand in hand, imho. The movies that are "truly" scary are the ones that are about atmosphere and tension, not severed limbs and sliced throats.
 Some of the scariest/creepiest movies I've seen have little/no blood in them (the exception is Cabin Fever but that's scary in the "it could happen and this how we would probably react" sense ;)). Overall though the gore actually pulls me away from the horror and reminds me it's just a movie. Same thing w/ most monster flix, when you see the creature (the dog thing in The Thing) a lot of times I just start

If we're talking Argento, let me state the obvious by recommending Suspiria.
MORDUM is certainly graphic, and disturbing. Personally,I preferred August Underground(the first movie). I also preferred the unauthorised version of Mordum that's on *gasp* VHS.
Both movies, IMHO, are much better viewed on VHS. With the digital degradation of the film(and therefore having the look of having been made by amatuers), and the unusual cuts, it can sure look like a home movie made by psychotic serial killers. It just makes sense that the home video would be on videotape.Makes it more effective.
I must say, though, the last scene in Mordum really, really got to me. It's the one time I said to myself "Goddamn, they've gone too far."
Very disturbing.
As for Cannibal Holocaust,I've seen it once and will never watch it again. There is no justification for killing the animals. None.
Now, if you want scary try The Changeling. It's one of the most underrated horror movies ever.

Yes that is the only version on dvd to get!
All other versions are cut in some way such as...
U.K hacks out all the animal violence,as well as the rapes & anything that counts as 'sexual violence',which is basically everything in the film.
Recent 2-dvd Italian SE is minorly cut, missing some real execution footage durring the 'Last Road To Hell' documentary footage.
All this is intact on the EC release of the film.
Despite being an extreme film. It is far more talented and well made than the August Underground films and other worthless faux snuff shit, that in my opinion do go too far since rather than attempt to tell a story, they just are porn for gorehounds which is far more offensive than Cannibal Holocaust in my opinion.
CH is an unpleasent, very hard to watch disturbing piece of work. But is a masterpiece of the genre with far more going on in it,than many people give it credit for.

I agree 100%. I've never seen a film that made me look away from the screen more than this one. The critic that jokingly called it the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre wasn't far off.
If this film had just been about the torture of a regular guy with identical violence it would have been NC-17 with no question and probably would have had religious groups protesting against it instead of celebrating it.

excuse some of us for trying to "turn on" the original threadstarter to something he may not have seen before...and something that fits the decription of what they were seeking. if he wanted atmospheric with little gore...thats what he would have asked for. by mentioning "truly gory" x2.....it seems like many of the titles mentioned would fit him like a glove.
I also agree with the other Argento choices above....I was just trying to avoid the same old titles that are mentioned every time. just giving a little respect to those films which seem to get none. no reason to keep them shut in a closet like a deformed monster-child that were trying to keep hidden from the public.

Both atmospheric and extremely gory.
For atmospheric and not so much gory try:
'the Shining' (Kubrick)
'Pet Cemetary'
'Rosemary's Baby'
'What ever Happened to Baby Jane'
'Nosferatu' (silent & Werner Herzog versions)
'Freaks' (Todd Browning)
For straight gore try:
'Cannibal Ferox' (real animal deaths may offend)

HAUTE TENSION, Alexandre Aja's French gorefest set for Lions Gate release sometime this fall, has been given an NC-17 for its copious gore. And as of now, it looks like the company is going to stick with the rating instead of making cuts for an R or going out unrated. We can only applaud this decision, and encourage fans to check out the movie in theaters when it opens; the more NC-17 movies are successful, the faster the stigma will disappear and the rating will become a viable one."
that is from fangoria.com. so we should be getting a complete domestic release that will satisfy all. as far as the French un-cut edition with no english subs...I say get it if you cant hold off. I've seen the Korean disc, so I pretty much understand the story and all....but really missed out on the complete version. now I'm getting the French dvd just for the uncut version....and can really care less about the audio. thats just the way I am with certian releases.

oh and if anyone's wondering here are the cut scenes from the korean dvd.
- A snippet from the killer with the girl head in his truck.
- The actual head rip from the decap, the spray of blood, and the close up of the spray.
- The severed hand next to the phone.
- The initial impact of the axe and the shots of it being in him.
- The first 'rip-away' of the barbed wire stick aganist the killer's face where it directly shows the torn flesh on his face.
- The side perspective of the cut-away machine sawing into the driver's torso with him visibly screaming caked in blood.

It's not really a horror movie but "The Day After" is pretty horrifying. It can be picked up for $10 at Best Buy.

YOU are correct sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First and only DVD to pop into my head when I read the title to this thread.

I picked up the French 2 disc of Haute Tension - but I also bought a "hybrid" bootleg of the same uncut version with English subs at this past Chiller Con - very sweet! Untold Story is a great flick... The All Night Long series are graphic too. But for sheer creepiness you may want to check out The Woman in Black or the JuOn series.

This isn't a thread crap. But I'd argue for The Passion of the Christ. A film that surely would've been NC-17 or beyond if the names of its protagonist and director had been changed.
Bravo, Noel, bravo. An excellent observation, and truly fact, not just opinionated conjecture.
(By the way, my last name is Gross as well; good family lines think alike, I guess.)

I would like to add Dark Water and Black Christmas. And Soon the Darkness is another neat little suspense thriller from the early seventies that is worth checking out.

Since this thread is about gory and upsetting (due to viscera) films, scary movies are irrelevant.

and hilarious, seeing as how fake and staged most of them are.
False. The Traces of Death series is real and revolting. Part two contains an unforgivably sadistic scene in which live pigs are tortured to death by cowards with flame-throwers; it is painful and sad to hear the pigs squealing in pain as their skin bubbles and peels. Faces of Death I-IV is mostly fake. The German Part V is real. There's a series called Faces of Gore, which is said to be the most graphic of the "genuine footage" mondo documentaries, but I haven't seen it.
Of fiction films, Cutting Moments, which is not a horror film but a domestic drama, might be the most shocking and realistic, but there are other contenders I can't recall right now, aside from some of those already posted. The Untold Story boasts an absolutely horrific conclusion (the brutal murder of an entire family, including little kids), but the film as a whole suffers from the usual HK camp.
Ah yes...Rikki O is a deliriously silly gorefest.

Is "Cannibal Holocaust" that bad? and can it be likened to either "I Spit On Your Grave" or "Last House on the Left"?
I am interested, just want to make sure it warrants a purchase. I have the other two, not for exploitation, just to have as a collector I think, but I actually have never even seen "I Spit" (not yet) and once on "Last House".
So it is more like to have out of curiousity, if that makes sense at all...<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_12_6.gif' alt='Ponder' border=0></a>

I think so...it's a great flick. animal killings are never any fun to watch....but it's part of the film so either people accept it or dont. I know you'll like the film....I say get it.
if you like it...there are plenty of other "cannibal" films to get, as well as maybe the Mondo Cane collection.

Got an email from them yesterday... and they confirmed, as gut mentioned, it's not avaiable on DVD. I'm going to order the VHS because I want the damn thing... :D

Everyday CNN news...which sometimes sicken me as I am enlighted of mankinds perverted and brutal treatment of each other.
Nonetheless, Audition last 20 min, Ichi the Killer, Irreversible "the two scenes", Suicide Club Ichi, nie, san... and then jump, TCM, Tetsuo but it is in black and white, Opera the eyes, Evil Dead, are just some film with some gore and horror that might be what you look for unless the Guinea Pig series and Untold Story is really what you are looking for.

Evil Dead was like Mary Poppins to me the first time I saw it years ago! The sequels got scary, but the original Evil Dead was pretty tame. Also, the excorcist directors cut was pretty much a joke. That spider walk down the stairs made me laugh!
