Anyway, as the title says I need help buying a Denon receiver. My receiver and DVD player was stolen last year and I was moving around from place to place. I'm finally settled and plan on setting up my HT again.
Why Denon? I want the 5 channel stereo sound. And I've always loved Denons.
My speakers are the Energy Take 5 system with the 8" sub.
My plan is to buy a receiver now and add it to my system. Down the road I would like to upgrade my front two speakers and center and run them with an outboard amp.
I was all set on the Denon 1804 until I just found out that this recevier doesn't have pre outs for an outboard amp down the road. I want to keeo the option of upgrading so preouts are really important. I'd like to eventually add outboard amps all around and use the denon as a pre-pro until I can afford a Lexicon Mc1.
So that's my background. I could use some advice. Now that the 1804 is out which one should I buy? Buy new, used or refurbished. My budget is about $500 and anything less than that is welcome.
Suggestions? New used or refurebished. What model numbers? Where should I buy it from - jand r, ebay or ecost?

The 2802 has preouts and is a very good receiver :)
Not sure where you can find one since it is discontinued.

I know you say your budget is $500 or less, but you're really missing a good shot with the 3803. It's last year's model, but it's an excellent receiver with pre-outs and on screen setup/volume control. It also has component upswitching. I've seen it sell for around $650 at various times now that it's been discontinued and now that a new model is out. I paid a little over $1000 for mine last year.

Just be sure to order from a Denon authorized dealer or they WILL NOT honor the warranty.

Captain - how's the 3801? I can get one used for about $300. I saw the 3803 refrubed at ecost for $525. Is that a good deal? Should I jump on it?

yes it has 6 preouts. Front L/R , Surrounds L/R , Center and Sub

I've never used the 3801, but a 3803 for $525 is a great price. I don't know if ecost is an authorized retailer or not, though.

anyone know if the next line of Denon receivers will have DVI switching? i'm ready to upgrade but i don't want to jump in before this feature is standard.

IMHO since DVI is not an oficially adopted standard I would not hold my breath.

officially adopted by who? virtually every HD capable television set sold today has DVI, as well as an increasing number of dvd players. what would the manufacturers have to lose by including DVI switching on AV receivers?

HDMI may be the next "standard"
However, InStat officials say, DVI, as well as its successor specification, High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), are seeing increased interest from consumer electronics manufacturers in 2002, especially digital television set manufacturers.
Personally I think the name of the game for the consumer is flexibility. I do not want to be restricted to any one set of connections,

Just a quick update. I have decided to go with the HK AVR 525. Various reasons, one of them being i can't find the 2803 or the 3803 in stock anywhre. I am getting a factory refurbed model for $430 direct from HK. It has some great prepro features and some really cool bvass management feautures. One neat thing is that the receiver ca apply bass management features to the analog 6.1 inout meaning i can buy a cheaper universal player like the Pioneer 563.

Denon has a number of new pieces coming, I'd wait. The 2805 is going to be a very nice piece, comparable to the 3805 feature wise. There are no plans for anything like dvi/hdmi switching on the upcoming models, with the possible exception of the 5805.

sorry, when i said DVI i meant HDMI. my guess the reason we haven't seen it yet is the cost of licensing the technology. but i could be wrong.
