Do you observe the One-Seat rule...?
I know you have seen it before. Two guy friends going to a movie together. Space permittting...they sit with one (sometimes more) seats between them. It makes me laugh every time I see it!
Do you partake in this weird male ritual? Are guys really that homophobic?

It's not homophobia, it's comfort. I don't mind being close to my wife, but I have no desire to snuggle up with another friend male OR female. So if there are plenty of empty seats, most definitely.

I kid!
I like to put my feet in the armrests in front of me. Plus, you know, you accidently brush your friend while getting your soda. Then you take that quick second to think "was that gay". It's just less akward with that extra space.

Haha....I didn't think of the armrest angle. I wasn't being accusatory...lol. I can see where comfort would definately be a factor :-)

If it's me and a bud, and the theatre ain't packed, yea there is a seat between us. If it's three or more, we usually sit together, there's usually chicks when it's three or more, too.

Yes, homophobes and guys who are not secured about their malehood do that. I'm sure they don't high five, man hug, shake hands, or slap ass either, I mean, that would make people think they're gay wouldn't it? Idiots.

Usually my friends and I do. I'm a big guy (6'6") and a couple of my friends are big guys as well so the space in between just makes it more comfortable.

This annoys me when people do this. It's like they're thinkin' "if we sit too close, people will think we're gay cuz we're two doodz". And then what irks me more is that they'll lean over the empty seat to 'whisper' to each other during the film, but since they are so far away, it's too loud. I mean - I can fully understand if it's two huge dudes that are either overweight or just really tall, but me and my friend are 6'1" and 6'0" and we sit next to each other and there's plenty of room.

I just did this recently while seeing Kill Bill Vol. 2. I went with my friend & his Dad and sat with them until the movie began then moved. No one else was on our row so I wanted to be comfortable.
The people that do it because they think others will think they are gay have some self-esteem issues. Who cares what others think; do what makes you happy.

It gets kind of warm in a packed theater, and I would rather not be rubbing elbows with my buddy, unless someone needs the extra seat. We are both pretty big, and I really think for us, it is for comfort, instead of a homophobic reaction.
This is probably along the lines of the Guys Rules of the Bathroom.

I think I stopped doing this in high school. I think it looks more ridiculous sitting a seat away than right next to each other.
Comfort? All the seats are the same size, how do you have more room in a different seat?
Heat? My theater keeps it pretty chilly in there, so no issue there.
Armrest? Do you use it the entire 2 hours? Doubtful. But this would be the only issue for me. I don't mind taking turns.

I will keep a seat in between if the theatre isnt packed....if its one of the theatres that the armrests come up, leaves plenty of room to be comfortable.

Only guy I share armrests with is my younger brother. 1/2 the fun of going to the theater with him was to wrestle for the armrest.

No. I've never heard of this ritual, and in fact think it might be one of the most retarded things I've ever heard of. If I go to the theater with a buddy, why would I not want to sit with them?

This does have it's roots in homophobia...back in high school we even had a name for the seat in between two guys - we named it the "hetrosexual seat". But being comfortable is also another valid reason for doing this...but I don't know too many guys who go with girls (non-girlfriends) to the movies and practice the same rule - even if the girl and/or guy is larger than average.

It's not homophobia it's just a matter of having room.
