What is the Best Director ever?

Simple question.

What is the Best Director of films ever?

Please don't take into account their other contributions to film, such as Producing, Editing or Special Effects. Just Directing.

...?...

...there are directors who specialize(d) (but not exclusively, by any means!) in suspense (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Siodmak), others who specialized in dramas (e.g. John Cromwell, Douglas Sirk), still others who specialized in comedies (e.g. Blake Edwards, Billy Wilder), yet others who specialized in Westerns (e.g. John Ford, Sergio Leone), and on and on...

In other words: there is no single "Best Director of films ever" - period (imnsho, of course!).

There really isn't any way to tell just who is the "best" director ever IMO, cuz it's more opinion than anything. However, if you want my opinion I'd say that Kubrick is the best.

Dude... Where's your Stanley Kubrick polling option? Lucas, Eastwood, Allen, Cameron? And no Kurosawa or Kubrick option (or Wilder or etc)? That's just wrong...

What is the best director? Probably a human being of sorts. Who is the best director? Well...I don't think I could ever label one person as the best.

or Federico Fellini (Nights Of Cabiria), or Satyajit Ray (Apu Trilogy), or Sergei Bondarchuk (War And Peace),
or David Lean (The Bridge On The River Kwai), or ...

Why is Lucas, Cameron... and even Speilberg on this list to begin with?

Could've picked so many other directors in their place... ie. Fellini, Herzog, Bergman, Fassbiner, etc.

PS. Title of the thread should be "Who is the best...", not "What is the best..."

carry on...

edited to add that my vote goes to Kubrick.

George Lucas?

Can't narrow it down to just one, but IMO it would be between Jean Renoir, John Ford, Orson Welles, Howard Hawks, or Jean-Luc Godard.

Ok, who voted for Eastwood? Could you please identify yourself so that I know not to take any recommendations from you in the future.

This is true. I would rather watch Eastwood's worst movie than Lucas' best, most likely.

...if you mean awesome as in "I am in true awe at how Lucas has sunk as a filmmaker", then sure, I agree.

True, Unforgiven was very good, haven't seen Mystic River yet. So, what makes him such a great director, based on 2 good films, assuming that Mystic River is one?

This is coming from the biggest snob the this forum. It's funny, when you are being an ass by critisizing things it's ok, but not when others do it.

I'm only somewhat snobish, not a total snob.
