There was a previous thread about this and decided to take a poll to see what is the top pet peeves when it comes to DVD's.

I took the top ten pet peeves in that thread and chose them to see what is the top one.

1. Snapper Cases (Warner Brothers infamous case design)
2. Forced Trailers or Previews (Trailers or other commercials that begin automatically when you start the DVD.)
3. Long Menus (Menus that take too much time to play)
4. Full Frame or Pan and Scan Only Releases. (Of Widescreen Films)
5. Double Dipping (Re-Releases)
6. Bad Case/ Hub Designs (Designs that either ruin the DVD/ Case or takes up too much space or won't hold up over a long time.)
7. Confusing Menus (Menus that are confusing in design, or difficult to follow instructions, etc.)
8. FBI Warning
9. Security Devices or Stickers (That ruin the package when removed)
10. Incorrect Aspect Ratio (Wrong Aspect Ratio on the DVD, instead of 2.35 it is released as a 1.85, or another example a Full Screen ratio is released in Widescreen as in the recent Kung Fu TV Series)

I would say damaged cases and loose disc. I don't really mind about incorrect aspect ratio because when they're not in OAR, I can opt not to buy the DVD. Forced trailer is quite a PITA too.

Forced Trailers, with annoying long menus a distant second.

How about other? Layer changes in awkward spots. The one that comes to mind is the one on Pulp Fiction, right in the middle of Christopher Walken's speech.

not having the film available in its OAR is the biggie.

that will completely void the purchase.

after i have purchased though, a loose disc would be up there,
and after that magled inserts or otherwised damaged casing material (my Escape From NY digipak was ripped to $hit, but there was no way to tell because the outside slipcase looked perfect).
this is a big problem for me because i turn around and sell off a lot of my disc periodically, and if its not mint 9whic they otherwise would be) then i get screwed out of the resale value.

after that my biggest nit is with not being able to switch audio channels on the fly.
sometimes, when there is a commentary track, i wan't to engage it just for a certain scene to see what if anything is being said about it.
its lame not to be able to just switch over, but instead have to stop the disc and go back into the menu , etc..

I cant stand the snap cases and they way they stick out when I have my movies orginized.

The other thing I dont like is the bad looking covers and spines..this might sound a little to picky but that and the snap cases are the only thing I dont like.

I went through that post and found only 2 references to Layer Changes.

Can't list everything.

I went through that post and found the top ten (Counted) peeves responders had in regards to DVD and listed them here.

Some others that I couldn't include in the poll are.
1. No Inserts
2. No Scene Selection
3. Commentary Responsibility Message from FOX video.
4. Expensive TV Box Sets.
5. Games on Animated DVD's
6. Audio Track Selection (Or other optoins) disabled.
7. "Floating Head" Cover Art
8. Flippers (Widescreen on one side/ Pan and Scan on the other)
9. Layer Changes
10. Easter Eggs
11. Non Anamorphic Widescreen Releases.

Probably countless other or variations of the poll selections and those above.

This poll should probably allow multiple choices...as much as i despise snappers, it's still my biggest gripe that some movies are released Full Frame only.

all of the above

Every single one of them. But I guess, since it's been around since the advent of DVDs, I hate the snapper cases most.

loose disc! i recently bought a toy story copy and relized when it was shipped that the dvd was loose! i'm still deciding if i should leave it "as is" (i dont plan on opening it) or just suck it up & open it, putting it back into it's spot..

I dont think I have just one. I hate all of these in no particular order.

No Inserts
Snapper Cases
No Disc art
Flippers
Forced Trailers
Long Menus (they are neat the first time but after that.......)
Incorrect Aspect Ratio

Im sure there are others out there, just cant remember them

Sorry to say but Snappers drive me crazy. I know it's superficial but isn't that always the case. I should say poor transfers of great (any) movies or worst, no transfer at all.

Forced Trailers, with annoying long menus a close second.

tcoursen

I voted for double-dipping, and would vote for forced trailers as a very close 2nd

I get real annoyed at the multiple releases for DVDS. Master and Commander is just the latest annoying DVD. The pricing structure of the 2-disc was just crazy. 25+ bucks for the 2 disc, when the 4 disc LOTR versions have been 25 bucks. A 2 disc version should be no more than 19.99.

And you know at some point down the road they will do something else with Master and Commander. I don't mind if they want to have a 1 disc or 2 disc version. Just price them appropriately for what you get.

I bought the original Black Hawk Down. Then they did the three disc, and now a superbit. Give me a break. The original Black Hawk Down should have had the DTS soundtrack. Same goes for Spiderman. Isn't that getting a new release soon for the sequal?

The double dipping is getting worse and worse as studios realize that people will buy multiple versions of the same movie.

Forced trailer where you can't fast forward or press button to go to main menu immediately and have to watch through the whole thing.

well techincally, on universal discs, you can fast forward. and on buena vista's dvd's you can hit the menu button

If it were a larger problem, I'd have to go for "Full Frame or Pan and Scan Only Releases". But I can only think of a VERY small handful of films that fall into this category (films I'm interested in, anyway...)

I'd go for the dreaded snapper case. The fact that Warner is still cranking these puppies out 6 years later, and after EVERY other studio abandoned them, is nuts.

All of the above, but the worst for me is double dipping.

what about INSERTS!?!?!??!

ukywyldcat
04-26-04, 01:15 PM
I hate no inserts.

Cheap bastards, give us a damn insert. And not one of these one page double sided pieces of garbage with only a chaper list and a boring picture.

An original Scarface-style pullout with lots of pics and information is what I want.

For ALL movies I buy.

my biggest is not listed. I have a widescreen TV and it annoys me that special features usually are notin anomophoric widescreen. After watching the movie I have to keep adjusting to standard mode or zoom depending on the feature (one of the things I liked about Texas Chainsaw Massacre 03 2 disc was that most of the features were anamophoric)

I went with snappers, but Rattlers is my largest peeve when it comes to physical DVDs (bare bones editions is my REAL # 1).

The security sticker thing is quite annoying as well. The other stuff doesn't really bother me that much.

tough call, but snappers got my vote.

asianxcore
04-26-04, 02:43 PM
full screen DVDs for widescreen movies
snapper cases
DVD covers that are longer than the case, then dont fit, so the cover sticks out getting all wrecked
dings, scratches, rips in soft cases/digipaks
forced trailers
BLOCKBUSTER, and how they put stickers on the covers themselves, and not on the cases.

Snappers.I hate them with a passion.

The security sensor sticker right behind your discs with the clear plastic shielding it,usually in slipcases. You try to rip the sticker off and it'll tear the cheap papercover off. ugghhh!

99th voter says "Forced trailers." Don't get me wrong, I love trailers (the more the better) but I've already seen most of them and like to pick and choose. (Better a special feature)
<P>And commercials . . . don't get me started there! Although my player will usually find a way around them (menu, chapter skip, fast forward, and more recently found out that just hitting "Stop" and then "Play" will usually go to the menu) I still don't like the fact that they are forced.

I find ratio issues to be the most important and unforgiveable issue, but at least in my collection that hasn't really been an issue; what gets me is more and more having to sit through forced trailers. Petty as it all really is.

NaturalMystic79

In order of importance,

1.) aspect ratio <-- most important
2.) forced trailers
3.) snapper cases
4.) no insert

Don't all DVD players let you switch the audio track on the fly? I have three DVD players. a cheapo Mintek, a panasonic, and a Sony. The sony and the mintek have a button that cycles through the audio tracks. the panasonic one has a button you press to get a OSD, and from there you can cycle the audio tracks. Don't all DVD's have similar features that would let you just cycle the audio tracks?

1) Forced Trailers and/or Previews or commercials
2) Long Menus
3) No Inserts

I think they do, but some DVDs block this feature, It's a pain. I do the same thing with commentaries.

I take Pet Peeve to mean "lil prob, but not big enough ta stop ya from owning it." By my connotation, Aspect ratio isn't a Pet Peeve, it's an issue.

My biggest Pet Peeve is the stickers. It's funny to me when I borrow a friend's disc and he to has the lil marks on the cover, usually near the top, where he pierced the plastic while taking off the sticker. Check it out next time you are at a friend's place and see. Doesn't happen everytime, but when it does, it just makes it look cruddy.

I picked Security Stickers or Devices that ruin the Case, but that is only becasue there is no option for "No play all feature in dvds with lots of segmented extras."

I've got another that I haven't seen on here yet: How about no "Play All" on TV shows and especially special features that are broken down into little 5-10 minute segments?

mikewendt

#1 Double Dipping, mainly because it's usually a pain-in-the-ass to unload the original disc.

#2 Damaged Cases, nothing bugs me more then having to go in and deal with store clerks that don't think a damaged case warrents a exchange.

So can we forward this to Universal? They are guilty of many of the top rated pet-peeves.

I dont bitch about much when it comes to dvd. the biggest thing is manufacturing quality...with the discs themselves. not many problems of late...but I keep concerned and vocal because I want my library to last as long as I choose to take care of it.

one thing I want that I dont get often is isolated music scores. just count that as a "feature" that I dont get enough of, and it's kind of a bummer.

could care less about what kind of case the discs comes in, big-headed coverart, inserts, menus...and all that stuff. it takes no enjoyment away from the film itself...or collecting. I'm usually happy with what I get because I make good choices.

FBI Warnings and Forced trailers are the same to me.

I'd prefer OAR on everything, and if it isn't I wont buy it.

I can make new cases for bad hubs, snappers, crappy artwork, etc...

But I cant do anything about forced trailers.......

Bad Case/ Hub designs/ Loose discs.

This problem is 100% uncalled for.
