Taking the PS2 plunge...again

Ok, so I last had a PS2 in July of last year. After I got my Gamecube and Xbox, I thought I'd never buy a PS2 again. However, there have been some cool games that have come out since then, and I have decided to give it another chance. Well that and I all of a sudden wanted to play FF VII, and FF VIII again

Now here is where I need advice....

What are the top 5 PS2 games to have come out in the last say 8-9 months. I really wanted to try FF X-2 (even though I never finished FF X), and I was planning on getting GTA: SA when it comes out in October. Ape Escape 2 is another I was thinking of trying.

Should I buy one now, or wait for the price drop? I know some places (like Circuit City I think) allow you 30 days to do a price adjustment, but with my luck I'd buy the PS2 and the price would drop 31 days after I did

Where is the best place to buy one? I was thinking Best Buy because of Reward Zone, but it really doesn't matter to me. Do different places have different models or are they all the same?

Should I buy an online adaptor or the hdd? I don't plan on playing FF XI, but is there another use for it?

Hi nick, I'll give my $.02, if you don't mind...
I definately think getting back on board the PS2 is a good idea. I'd get the online pack; it's only $20 more and there will be some great online games this year exclusively for the PS2 (most notably GT 4 and Ratchet & Clank 3). If you can wait, I might give it a month as I'm pretty sure there will be a price drop around the E3 next month.
Best Buy might be the best place to pick up your PS2. If you splurge the extra $25, you can get a replacement program and if, coincidentally, your system would happen to suddenly die (cough cough) right as the PS3's became available with their full backwards compatibility, let's say 2 years from now, you could get a full refund and buy that instead. Another possibility is Costco's packages, which are a little expensive, but they have such a leinent return policy, it might be worth it.
As far as best PS2 games recently, to be honest, I haven't bought many since picking up the BOX, but I wholeheartedly recommend Ratchet & Clank 2; it's a total masterpiece. Jak 2 is very good and only suffers by comparison. THUG is multi-platform, but you've gotta go with the PS2 version; online play is fun and being able to stick your face in the game is just too cool. While not technichally a game, the Eye Toy is a blast and makes for a really fun thing to break out at parties. It's also a lot of fun if you have little ones in the house as they can play too. SOCOM 2 is hugely popular, if you want an online shooter.
I would skip the HDD. I've always felt it would be a massive flop, and though I haven't seen the sales numbers, I'm pretty sure I'm right. SOCOM 2 has HDD functions, but it's not required. Ditto GT 4. I would think that it's a peripheral you really won't need.

Thanks, Decker.

I think I'll wait another week or two before I buy the PS2.

Has anyone else heard any new info about the price drop?

Usually around E3 time. That's what "history" has taught me.

Anyway you might want to try these games;

Return of the King
Freedom Fighters
Sly Cooper (bit of an older title but excellent and it's only $20)
Prince of Persia
EA Sports titles
007 Everything or Nothing

Im waiting. Its onlyn a couple more weeks.

Return of the King
Freedom Fighters
Sly Cooper (bit of an older title but excellent and it's only $20)
Prince of Persia
EA Sports titles
007 Everything or Nothing
No offense but why buy a PS2 for a bunch of multiplatform games?

It's the exclusives that interest me the most.

I never heard any talk of a PStwo. Sounds cool.

Nick, I've enjoyed my PS2 (I know, I know..). Well, other than the troubles I've gone through to be able to play imports that is (GRAAAGH!!).. I spent the most time on Kingdom Hearts. Okay, I guess after that I haven't done much with it. I played my import games until the modchip died, now my PS2 is awaiting either rewiring or removal of modchip.. I've had my friend's PS2 since then (2 months ago?) and I *just* now hooked it up to play ICO.

Pixy, don't lie, you know you play FF X-2 all day and all night

I have heard so much stuff about ICO, maybe I should try that. I played Kingdom Hearts before, lots of fun. One of the many PS2 games I owned at one point and never finished.

I'm a PS2/GC/Xbox owner who hasn't touched my PS2 in months, and was going to be listing it on eBay within the next week. If you're really interested in getting back on it, maybe I could give you a better deal than buying a new system...

email me, [email protected] if interested

Thanks for the offer, jabbas, but I don't usually buy used video game systems. I'd rather pay more for new.

Picked up a PS2 today, also got FF VII at Circuit City for $15, not bad. So now what are some good games for PS2? The cheaper the better, but any suggestions are welcome

Out of the greatest hits lineup

Ratchet and Clank is the best platformer I've played this gen, the sequel can be had for $30-40 and was well reviewed (I'm waiting to find it at $20).

Gran Turismo 3 is a great racing sim.

Sly Cooper is another great platformer, but very short

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution is a great fighting game

Hot Shots Golf 3 is a good bit of fun

And there's several good multiplatform titles like Medal of Honor Frontline and what not for $20 as well.

I-Ninja
Klonoa 2
Sly Cooper
Dark Cloud 2

If I wanted to play Dark Cloud 2, would playing Dark Cloud 1 make it easier to understand?

I tried GT 3 awhile back. Great game, just not really into racing games.

Played Jak 1, and it was cool, but not a real big fan.

Never tried Ratchet and Clank, but isn't it the same type of game as Jak?

I never played Dark Cloud too to I can'y comment on that but I enjoyed DC2. Jak II is definitely better that than the first. I highly recommend Jak II.

For Ratchet & Clank, you'll play from beginning to end and play it again.

I thought about getting a PS2 again.

Instead I am just going to wait for PS3.

I can always just play a game I want on someone elses system.

I made an arrangement with my cousins. I will buy the games, but they furnish the system.

The games remain my property. The system remains theirs.

I could never wait for the new consoles. Even after they come out, chances are I wouldn't buy one until the first price cut. Unless they were less then $250, which is unlikely.
