Original Final Fantasy RPG for GBA and info on FF I & II

From Polygon magazine:

Square-Enix "Fantasy" Plan

By Dennis Day, News Editor
Published April 21, 2004 -- 05:19 pm CDT

Square-Enix producer Takashi Tokita recently revealed new details regarding the company's GameBoy Advance plans. Tokita-san, who is currently overseeing the translation of "Final Fantasy I-II Advance," has confirmed plans for a completely new installment in the "Final Fantasy" RPG series on the GameBoy Advance. Reportedly, planning on the game is currently underway although specifics remain largely undisclosed.

In an interview with Dengeki Gamecube this month, Tokita-san also revealed that Square-Enix was pressured by Nintendo to translate their classic RPG "Final Fantasy III" for the GameBoy Advance. However, after extended negotiations the company opted to develop enhanced versions of "Final Fantasy I-II" instead. A staff of approximately twenty programmers and artisans are overseeing the development of "Final Fantasy I-II Advance" which is slated for release this July in Japan.

This is good news indeed for 2D RPG lovers. As for the second bit of dish, if I had a choice I would have rather had FF III, but I imagine once Square and Nintendo get desperate enough for the money they'll translate it anyway.

We already got 1 & 2 re-done for the PS1 and now they want to do them again for the GBA?? The only one we don't have is 3....that's the one they should be working on. Square should have listened to Nintendo.

On the plus side, they are making them look good and I'm sure upgrading the music and stuff as well. You can see some screenshots on IGN here.

And I'm not complaining too much, because I'm really enjoying FFTA, Sword of Mana, and FF:CC on the GCN, none of which would have happened if Nintendo hadn't closed the deal.

Nintendo was regarding the American III, which is really VI, not the Japanese III. Either game would have made for a better translation than another re-packaging of I+II.

No, they upgraded the graphics and music four years ago for the WonderSwan Color, then released slightly modified versions for the PlayStation, and are now releasing presumably identical versions for the Game Boy Advance.

Square just didn't want to go to all that trouble for Final Fantasy III and instead decided to go for the quick cash-in.

It's talking about Final Fantasy I and II (the second being a game that wasn't released in the US until late 2000). If they were referring to VI, it would make sense to say VI in that context.

They said "pressured to translate III." VI was already translated for the Super Nintendo and re-translated for the PlayStation. I guess translate could mean "convert to this platform," but it would have been kind of dumb to use a word that the article's audience would obviously associate with language translation.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo wanted III because it would be the first time the game was (officially) translated and released in North America -- a huge draw for Nintendo.

It's not going to be a repackage of the Wonderswan versions. Anybody who took the time to read the article would be able to figure that out.

Hmm.. oops.

Yeah the article posted HERE doesn't mention anything.. articles elsewhere (IGN, Magic Box, etc.. can't provide links cause I can't access any of them at work) mention that they are redoing the magic system for both games and adding extra scenarios and bonus dengeons to the end of each game.

I probably read the article there first, came here and thought it would've been the same one (or at least mentioned that!).. my bad.

Indeed...if it was a worthwhile game to translate. The Mana games are massively overrated.

In-depth article about FF 1&2 and what we can expect from the updates. Nice read.

I agree that the Seiken Densetsu series is a tad overrated. I really liked the art design on Legend of Mana, but the play mechanics were strange. I'd still like to see SD 3 translated. Not before FF VI, though.
