MGM cutting corners on R2 DVD subtitles - a call for your support

As from next summer, MGM catalog releases in region 2 won't include subtitles in German, Italian or Spanish. Apparently, they consider those are 'dubbing-favoring' languages, so there's no need to cater for the subtitling-reading minority (or the hearing impaired, for that matter). The French still get a dub track and French subtitles.

Upcoming MGM titles such as Judgment at Nurenberg and On the Beach have already announced and, indeed, German, Italian and Spanish subtitles are missing from the feature list.

There's no confirmation of what will happen on other regions.

Hello, MGM? I thought one of the main selling points of DVD was the option of choosing multiple soundtracks and subtitles.

The Spanish mundoDVD community on ezboard has set up a petition. Although this may matter little to you, if they get away with this may be they will want to cut corners on something that does affect you. It is written in English and Spanish.

Petition - Subtitles are not expendable

Thanks very much for your support. It means a lot.

I heard Sony was looking to buy MGM. Whether that is only within the US or worldwide I don't know.

Thank you all.

Another addition: Inherit the Wind has Italian, German, Spanish, French and English audio tracks and Romanian, Dutch, Greek, French and English subtitles. Again, no Italian, German or Spanish.

Apparently the German DVD community has already heard of the petition.

Any Italians here that could relay the news?

Thanks!

MGM have announced a dozen more titles for July without subtitles, including the Wyler classic The Best Years of Our Lives. Shame on MGM.
