Films that were finished but never released?

A question for you film experts out there.

For some odd reason this question popped into my head this morning. I've heard plenty of stories of studio execs ruining films by demanding changes, bad marketting, putting off the release dates for months or years, etc. But have there been films that were completed, bought and paid for, then for one reason or another were simply buried in the studio vault?

Just curious.

Awww, Pixy took my answer.

OK, um, not exactly "never" released, but Ed Wood's Night of the Ghouls was completed but unreleased for many years because he didn't have money to pay the film lab who developed it, so they didn't give him the print. Poor Ed.

Wasn't there a Jerry Lewis film that wasn't released?

Dang! There is a Actress who was talking about a movie that she performed in that was never released because the distributer filed bankruptcy and now he film is in legal "who owns it" court. It'll be days or months before I figure out who she is and what the movie is called. She did say that she was very happy with the movie.

Emilio Estevez had a movie back in '83 that never got released. Pretty vague, but I know about it...Not sure of the title.

Whatever happened to that? And I heard a story that Al Pacino directed a film but he couldn't stand it and never released it.

Yeah, I had forgotten about The Devil and Daniel Webster. I was interested in it because it had Anthony Hopkins, one of my favorite actors. I do remember reading that Hopkins was quoted as saying the movie was finished but they never had enough money to release it and Baldwin (who also directed it) was either too busy or not particularly interested to get it released.

The Local Stigmatic.

I don't know if Al said he couldn't stand it, but it's never been viewed to the public.

There was a trailer to The Devil And Daniel Webster circulating on the web for a while...it didn't look all that bad. I'm shocked that HBO or someone hasn't picked it up.

Or Miramax's US release of Hero... although that finally looks like it will be released. Envy was shelved for awhile because Stiller didn't like it enough, but that looks like it's finally getting released as well.

Did Prozac Nation, starring Christina Ricci, ever get released? It was completed 2 years ago, I believe.

I think there was a movie a few years ago that was so shitty they decided it wouldn't end up making it in theaters so one of the cable companies (USA, TBS) had the world premier. I think it was a heist movie with Christian Slater and a couple of other people I'd heard of.
