How is "King of New York"?
I love gangster movies. Scarface, Once Upon a Time..., Empire, all kinds, but I saw pieces of this on tv a long time ago and never got into. How is it as a movie? Anyone have this new DVD to be released Tuesday? How is it overall? Thanks for any comments and help from viewers.

Excellent. Violent as hell and Chris Walken doing what he does best. There's a scene with him and some thugs on a subway car which is one of my all-time favorites. Lots of familiar faces before they got big (Snipes, David Caruso, Larry Fishburne, Steve Buscemi). I'm looking forward to upgrading my crappy non-anamorphic disc.

Not sure if you knew this or not, but there is a new SE coming out tomorrow with an anamorphic transfer, DD5.1 and extras. And it's pretty cheap too.

You say its not as good as Scarface but complain about a loud, ridiculous character?
"IM ANTONIO MONTANA. I ****ING KILL YOU MANG. YOU GONNA DIE BECAUSE I LIKE JAME CAGNEY. HAVE SOME COKE, BE SOMBADEY!!! ITS A CADDALACKA"

Scarface's rant was in the context of his character and that character was established thoroughly throughout the movie. That is in stark contrast to a lightweight redhead acting like a tough guy. Big difference. He had no storyline or character development and came off ridiculous.

KONY is still a fun, dark film, though dumb in spots, and Walken is like ice that melts and giggles every now and then. It's worth buying the new DVD just to hear director Abel Ferrara's commentary track. Throughout he laughs and mocks the phoniness of a lot of scenes -- he even admits up front that he's doing the track for the five grand he was offered. It's a real hoot.

Abel Ferrara is a real character. There's also a good documentary which features interviews with many of his longtime collaborators. They all do spot-on impressions of his weird mannerisms. Also, I've got an interview with him in the archives in Cinema Gotham that I did with him at his apartment where he really went off on some tangents. I wasn't able to include everything he said because a lot of it was just crazy rambling. Quite an experience.

Fishburns character was New Jack City and over the top. Caruso was his usual loud, ridiculous character. The whole scheme by the cops was completely fake and not feasible at all. It was just a cool movie when I was 10 but looks stupid 14 years later. I love Walken, but there was no story to it. There was no attachment to the characters.
