help identifying this movie

all i remember was a scene where a couple are either unpacking or renovating their house and they somehow discover (i believe under the wallpapaer) red writing along the curved stairwell. i *think* it says "roxie" and they *figure* out it's an old flapper girl????

any clues on this? i think it's a well-known film, i just saw it as a kid and that's all i can remember.
