are there any high action shaw brothers movies?

the only one i have tried to watch is "five deadly venoms" and didn't like it too much. first of all, the print is in terrible shape, and there wasn't any action in the movie (i gave up after about an hour) i don't care about if its dubbed or not, i just want one with alot of violence and action (and a few kill bill references as well)

Buy an all region dvd player and head on over to the various Shaw Bros threads in International DVD.

If it's still in print and if you can find it, try the classic (Shaolin) Master Killer starring (Gordon) Chia Hui Liu - Pai Mei in Kill Bill Vol. 2. A MUST HAVE in any collection, ImO.
Others:
Invincible Shaolin
Chinese Super Ninja (Five Elemental Ninjas)
Flag Of Iron
The prints are passable, but don't let the ShawScope logo fool you, some of these are P&S. If you really want to get into the Shaw Bros. martial arts films, do what devilshalo suggested.

For that get Fist of the White Lotus, which has Gordon Lui fighting Pai Mei (played by the late, great Lo Lieh), the character Lui ends up portraying in Volume 2.

The R3 Celestial releases of the Shaw Brothers catalogue is one of the main reasons I went region-free. Their prints are all pristine, OAR, and original language - along with (in many cases) extras such as commentary, interviews, etc.

i got that idea from this quote on hkflix.com
During the production of "Kill Bill", Quentin Tarantino insisted on portraying all the "gore" just as it was done in the classic Shaw Brothers martial arts films of the 70s and early 80s. This includes lots of arterial blood spray, as seen in the classic Shaw films by directors such as CHANG CHEH.

Most blood isn't anywhere near as gratuitous in old school kung fu movies as QT made that sequence. You want that kind of blood spray.. you'd have to take a look at something like Ninja Wars.

Not one dull moment in that one. And there is bloodshed in this movie, but don't expect buckets full of them.

You want arterial blood spray? Check out Shogun Assassin. Great movie. Not a Shaw Brother Film, though. I really liked Green Snake, which is available via netflix. The only complaint, I had about the movie is that the subtitles were too small and thus difficult to read. This is a Tsui Hark film I believe. Also check out Drunken Master II and Chinese Ghost Story.

oh, drunken master 2 might be a hard one. the region 0 version is cropped (its 1:78 instead of 2:35) and the region 1 is dubbed and is edited.

Shogun Assassin was made from editing together parts from the two first films (LWaC: Sword of Vengeance and LWaC: Baby Cart at the River Styx) in the six film long series of Lone Wolf and Cub (LWaC: Sword of Vengeance and LWaC: Baby Cart at the River Styx, LWaC: Baby Cart to Hades , LWaC: Baby Cart in Peril, LWaC: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons, LWaC: White Heaven in Hell). The series up to the fourth film is out from Animeigo , with the two last to come this spring/summer, beautifully restored.
The series itself is based on an even longer manga series.

Not to completely go off topic, but I have a somewhat related question with KB Vol 2 spoilers:

Spoiler:
Isn't Shogun Assassin the film that Beatrix and her daughter watch before going to bed near the end of Vol 2?

Yep, when arterial blood spray was mentioned Shogun Assassin immediately came to mind - definitely worth checking out! And I'd also recommend the Shaw Brothers classic Seven Blows of the Dragon, starring David Chaing - no spray but action packed and very gory.

You want The Water Margin which is known in the states as Seven Blows of the Dragon. Here's the R3 cover from Celestial.

What you point to isn't the same movie.

If it's the Warner released VHS copy.. I would keep it as there are cut scenes in it not on the R3 release. (And vice versa)

Yeah my vhs copy is the original Warner release (in one of those oversized boxes), so I guess I won't be getting rid of it...thanks for pointing that out. And I thought I read in another thread that R3 dvds will play on R1 players, is that true? If so where can I order the dvd?
