Roger Ebert health ok?
Hi. Since the Academy awards i noticed Ebert has lost lot of weight and his voice has gotten a little higher in tone. How is his health? I know he had some problems last year causing his funny look with his lips, but he just sounds soo different nowadays. Hope he will be all right. Thanks guys.

He's been trying to lose weight, and done so quite well.
Dunno if you remember his problem with Vincent G. and his comment "One day I will be skinny, but you will still be the director of Brown Bunny"
As for his voice, I have no clue - he had some tumors removed last year and I think a stroke-style episode. Maybe that had something to do with it? I really never notice that kind of stuff.

I guess when someone's apperance and voice changes to dramatically over a short period of time, it's just odd. I watched the show for the first time in a little less than I year, and I didn't feel like I was watching him. So odd.

I haven't watched the show for a long while. The way he now speaks with mostly one side of his mouth seems to indicate he suffered from a stroke. The weight loss is drastic too.

How long a long while? When I watched several months ago, he had lost a fair amount of weight, and talked out of one side of his mouth. He seemed different, but not that different.
I watched last week, and he's really thin, and has a totally different voice. If it's been a long while for you, watch again, it's amazing. (I also didn't notice the mouth thing as much...)

Roger Ebert had surgery for thyroid cancer - the gland is located in the lower part of the neck. So there was probably some slight damage to his vocal chords because of either the cancer or the medical procedure.

Anyone else been disappointed with the direction his show has taken lately?
We've been bothered how they'll do these "early reviews" of a big blockbuster hit, then they'll review it again the week it comes out, then after its out for a few weeks they'll re-visit it again, and then of course they'll review the DVD when that gets released.
It seems like they do a lot less indie & foreign films. Especially considering thow they used to cover pretty much every movie that was released. Now, I'll see movies listed at my local art house theatre that Ebert & Roeper haven't ever mentioned.
It just seems like they have become more like shills for the major studios. When a movie like "The Passion" or some other blockbuster comes out, I'll get sick of hearing about it every week on their show.
I wonder if this is Roeper's influence?

I haven't seen any notable indie or foreign film that they've missed, personally. What does happen often is that they'll review the film when it plays in Chicago, but it'll be months before it trickles to other markets.

When E&R reviewed Scooby Doo 2, they resorted to showing their review of Scooby Doo 1, and the contrast in how Ebert looked then (just 2 years ago) and now is striking. Of course, Reoper still looked like a dork.

Most of the indie films come out in late summer early fall..
The studios generally release crappy films in the spring..
What am I saying??..They do that year 'round
Ebert does look and sound differently..How old is the guy btw??

I haven't watched the show in a long time (just read his movie reviews on the internet) and am watching it right now. WOW, has he changed.
He does talk kind of like a stroke victim.
insert obligatory "Ebert is losing his mind" comment here
