Could I have my friend buy that using her student status (saves $200) and GIVE it to me

It would only be installed on MY computer and she would never use it. We could call it a "gift"?

Are there any technicalities or legal issues with that?

Yeah, it's technically illegal. It would be a violation of the academic licensing agreement.

Go sign up for a few classes at your community college, get a student ID and buy whatever academic software you want. That's perfectly legal.

Except with some things, the license expires when you stop being a student.

Good question. I thought the answer would be yes but I guess not. Funny though, you can check out some software titles at your local library and they work fine. But the selection is very limited.
