Plasma TV Help

Hello all, I'm starting to look for an HD Plasma TV, and saw on Costco.com that there is a 50in Maxent TV for 4400. Way lower than anywhere else. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on Maxent. I've never heard of the company, and it's alot of money to pay for without doing research.

Has anyone heard about the Maxent brand? or if they have a website?

Thanks

Here's a link to the tv:

Sideview, they don't list the Akai 42" that they carry in the warehouse. I believe it's $2700 or so. It looked pretty good I thought.

I've seen the Akai, but I was looking at possibly a larger screen...plus I don't know if Akai is any better than Maxent, haven't really heard of either. But I do admit it looks nice at the store...

One of the nice things about Costco is you can return it if you don't like it. This being said, the thing to really look for is a good contrast ratio. The Maxent is about as low as they come.

gotapex, could you explain what you mean with the low contrast ratio? what is better vs. worst 500:1 is good?

Also, I like how you can return it to Costco, but they don't do extended warrenties, I'm almost willing, because of the cost to get a longer warrenty.

Thanks

Ben

The higher the contrast ratio the better 500:1 is sub par. Look for something with X:1. "X" being a higher number.

The Maxcent 42" @ Costco has a 1200:1 contrast ratio.

Costco has one the best return policy. No matter when you buy merchandise you can return it for any reason at any time with your receipt. Due to abuse thi sdoes not work for computers, only 6 months for those.

The best 50" panels (based on the current generation Panasonic glass) have 3000:1 on/off contrast.

Another piece of advice on Plasmas, you get what you pay for. By that I mean that the cheapest plasmas will not be as nice as the name brand screens that are $1,000 to $3,000 more.

Supposedly the Maxent is a rebadged Sampo. Someone at AVS Forum got one and said the box had Maxent stickers over Sampo.

If your going to be spening 3-4k on a plasma you might as well fork out a few more grand for a nice one. Go with a name brand im sure it will be much better in the long run.

Is Akai a reasonable brand, or just another cheap branding knock off?
