everyone loves the big dunks
but so many games come down to the players that can step up and make the freethrows
who are the top freethrow shooters of all time at any level?
who would you want on the line when trying to ice a tight game, or to take the lead at the end

in all seriousness, I would feel really confident if I had Stockton on the line.

One of the best pros ever was Rick Barry and he shot underhanded (Granny style). He had a long career and when he retired his 90% success rate was a record. In one season, 1978-79, he missed only 9 free-throw attempts. Shaq has missed that many in 1 game.

My first thought was Christian Laettner..dunno why.
Edit: After checking NBA.com, it stated for him:
Ranked 9th in the NBA in 1997-98 in free-throw percentage (.864)

Guess I am not too far into left field.

Blake Ahearn (Southwest Missouri State)
He made 117 of 120 attempts this past season - 97.5% of his free throws to break the NCAA record. He was more successful from the line than J.J. Redick, who made 137 of 143 attempts (95.8%).

Calvin Murphy:
His best season was 1977-78 when he averaged 25.6 ppg. He ranks third in the NBA record book for consecutive free throws made (78) and first for seasonal percentage mark hitting on 206 of 215 attempts for a .958 percentage both achieved in the 1980-81 campaign. He led the NBA in free throw percentage twice and finished among the top five eight other times.

Wilt Chamberlain was one of the worst free throw shooters of all-time but he made 28-32 in his 100 point game. How about unusual FT shooters-Hal Greer and Don Kojis shot FT's with a jump shot;Bob Boozer shot them from a right angle,Chamberlain and Rick Barry shot underhanded and Don Nelson shot them one-handed(in his palm) over his head.

There must be some minimum on number of shots on that list, cuz Mock-Mood was 1,051-1,161 which would put him on top of that list and he is not even on it.
Nash has just a couple more hundred total and he's on the list; I guess that's maybe because he is still active.

I'll take Gerry McNamara (because I hate dook, and can't take Reddick). Wait a minute . . . I hate Syracuse too.
Since I could give an asses rat about pro ball, I'll take that Ahearn guy that BA mentioned.

Nba.com prolly missed a spot though .It'll be insane if over 1000 FTs made and you're still not proven to qualify.

Tom Izzo regularly sinks 100 straight free throws in practices to demonstrate their importance to his players....I think his record is close to 200 in a row!
Now that's coaching! ;)

this is why i listed cartwright
he held the ball with hand hand on each side of it.. and put his hands straight up above his head before he took a freethrow
it looks more like he was throwing boulders than shooting freethrows

This is such a stats driven skill, it's hard to pick someone who deviates much from the stats...
