I've been working my way through the PKD reader, and I read this one yesterday.

I do not understand what happens at the end at all. Now, my reading of it is probably a little slanting because I've seen Total Recall. But he could have used another 4-5 pages to flesh things out better.

The only reason I could even figure how the Rekal didn't take was because he'd already been to Mars to do exactly what he wanted implanted because I'd seen the movie

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best I can figure is that Quaill really did go to Mars and assasinate some leader, and it was erased from his mind. He will always keep going back to Rekal because it hadn't been erased from his desire.

Is this right?

Pretty sure your right on the money, but what about the "Magical Invisible Destroying Rod" he had that was given to him? I thought that was true? Now I'm confused.

Presumably the short story "We Can Remember for You Wholesale " on which Total Recall was (loosely) based.

It's a compilation of some of PKD's best short stories, including the ones that movies were based on: We Can Remember it for You Wholesale (Total Recall), Second Variety (Screamers), Minority Report, and Paycheck.

Good choice, lots more stories that way.
