How come some actresses have clauses in their contracts to not do nudity? I mean, when you think about it, that's really hurting their careers when they do that. Look at Charlize Theron, no problem doing nudity, wins an Oscar, same with Jennifer Connelly, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Gwenyth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, and Holly Hunter. I think the actresses that state they won't do nudity at all are truly limiting themselves to certain roles. What do you think?

Well, if they don't want to nudity from the get-go I certainly wouldn't hold it against them. It could be for moral/religious reasons, timidity etc. What irks me are the ones who use nudity to get into films and once they have a hit movie drop in the no-nudity clause because they are serious "artists" now and it's beneath them (Shannon Elizabeth for example). Of course the opposite also comes into play where you have to do nudity to get attention since your once strong career is now floundering (Meg Ryan) and you need to do something to get attention back.
Hillary Swank has done nude scenes??? Please advise!

Nope, I'm serious. Of course I've only seen her Karate Kid movie, Insomnia and Boys Don't Cry (it's been a while, but I don't remember any nudity in that one).

In regards to "Boys", apparently the European prints of the film are the full unrated cut of the film. The film here in the states was trimmed of explicit footage, notably during the rape sequence to earn it's R-rating.

I remember reading that Neve Campbell initiated a 'no-nudity' clause in her contract when Wild Things was to begin filming.

Not to sound prude or anything since I'm always up for seeing chicks like Nicole Kidman nude, but how the hell is it limiting? I haven't seen any role where it was a MUST for the actress to get nude to truly be in character.
It's a bonus, but not a requirement. Be a conviencing actress first and foremost before you try to just be eye candy. Look at the whole 9 yards. Was that quick nude scene REALLY needed?

Show girls in itself would be limiting your career. Not taking it is a smart thing.
Nudity really doesn't limit it. I didn't have to see Roller Girl nude in boogie nights to get the idea that she is a porn star. These are all things that can be worked around. Is it a nice bonus? Yes. Is it a requirement to truely get great roles? No, not really.

I think don't think Jolie has shyed away from nudity since she hit it big. Just look at Original Sin (2001), and her new movie Taking Lives. She didn't show everything in the Tomb Raider series, though she came close, because it would't have been appropriate. In the last few years she has taken a variety of roles, some don't require nudity, some do. I don't think it is fair to lump her in with actresses like Shannon Elizabeth and Denise Richards who make their career on nudity, then require a no-nudity clause once they make it.

Hey OP, with your logic, Shannon Tweed should receive a lifetime achievement Oscar.
Last time I checked Julia Roberts is an Oscar winner that never appeared nude in any of her films. Its a well known fact that she had a body double in Pretty Woman.
Hell I find it funny to see how few movie Charlize is NOT nude in. I think Im up to three (3).

Not exactly true. In Pretty Woman if you look through the correct lattice hole when she and Gere are getting it on at the end of the movie, you see a little something perfectly framed!

Okay that scene is within the first 40 minutes of the movie, not at the end. And in interviews since the movie, she (Roberts) has said it was a BODY DOUBLE.

I'm not discussing whether or not nudity is required for a particular film. Let's take 21 Grams for example. There's a scene of nudity in the script, does the studio pick an actress that is ok with nudity or one they will have to negotiatie to get her to take her clothes off? The studio picks the actress who is ok with doing nudity and thus leads to an Oscar nomination. That's what I mean by it limiting a certain actresses' potential roles. 21 Grams was just an example, I have no idea how Naomi Watts came about getting the part. Yes, there are plenty of Oscar winning actresses who have never done nudity but I think as an actress when you make it known that you won't do nudity, that's a big strike against you. Automatically, that actresses' agent throws out scripts of Titanic, Monster's Ball, Monster, 21 Grams, Boys Don't Cry, Boogie Nights, and other potentially great parts.

As far as 21 Grams goes, Naomi Watts contacted Inarritu and said she wanted to work with him before she even read the script. Of course, as we all know, she was perfectly willing to do the nudity, so it worked out. I have a feeling that even if she didn't want to do nudity before 21 Grams, she would have done it for the film, because of the way she talks about Inarritu and his cinematic genius.

I would say about 95% of all nudity in movies have nothing to do with the plot of the movie. They could have done many other things other than showing a woman nude and still have had the same plot.
I really do feel sorry for these woman that have to take their clothes off to be noticed or to get a part. My wife and I would rather see a movie with no nudity and a great plot anyday of the week.
And I do not think a woman is holding back her carrer with having a no nudity clause in her contract. I believe she will get back 100 times more in self respect and respect from family, friends and fans.
Look what happens when she loses her beauty, everyone starts talking about how she has gone down hill and looks like a dog now. Nudity can only take you so far, just look at Denise Richards carrer, not a whole lot of awards being won as best actress.

Well I don't think a woman should do nudity to try to jumpstart a career. It should be for a role she is passionate about and a director she has a lot of respect for. I would have to disagree about your 95% assumption, Iron_Giant. I don't think nudity ever has anything to do with the plot of the story it more has to do with the way the story is told. I think it fits more along the lines with camera angles or editing, it either enhances or detracts the plot of the story. Its kinda like saying 95% of all f-words in movies have nothing to do with the plot of the movie. True but some of the most memorable phrases in movies have the f-bomb in them. Anyway, its nice to hear some different opinions on the matter.

Halle has denied the reports that she was paid extra for the nude scene, but who knows?
I did a little searching and found this interview (http://archives.tcm.ie/businesspost/2001/07/29/story329719.asp) where she talks about it and a related story about how Travolta was a major ass during one of her scenes (my words not her's). She was doing the scene where he interupts her changing clothes and breaks character to ask the crew to "applaud the body".

Why do people complain so much when women go topless in movies. They always say there is more female nudity than male, yet men go shirtless all the time. Think about it.

Looks like Anne Hathaway ("Princess Diaries" chick) is going to be taking it all off in "Havoc."

Can you imagine Anne Hathaway, star of such family friendly fare as THE PRINCESS DIARIES and the upcoming ELLA ENCHANTED doing full-frontal nudity and masturbation scenes? Neither could I but apparently it's the real deal. Numerous test screenings for the film HAVOC have been taking place and, of course, reviews have leaked to the web that talk about the abundance of nudity in the film, most surprisingly by Hathaway.
