Is it ok to have one surround farther away?
I'm moving to a new place that has a long family room with centered fireplace. Since the seating area will not be centered and given the need to fire the surrounds into the room, the one speaker would be on a side wall, about 6-8 feet away while the other speaker would be 2-3 feet from the listening area. I know you can adjust the delay and volume of the speakers, but I'm wondering if there are any problems with this in real life situations.

Remember that you have to set the distance to the surrounds in the receiver's setup menu so it can calculate the correct delay time. Unless you can specify the distances separately, there will be a phase error between them.

I can set it differently for each speaker, the receiver is a pioneer elite and has distance and volume for each speaker. I was just worried it might not work in real life. But it sounds like it does.

Get yourself a sound level meter from Radio Shak for about $35. Run that with a calibration disk, or even the "pink noise" from your receiver to set all speaker levels correctly.
