Mmm...fresh thread smell. Oh wait, that's just skippy.

But anyhoo, on ESPNEWS, they said Kobe would start tomorrow...let's hope he's not too tired from sitting in a courtroom with his accuser all day.

Neither team is playing all that well lately but the Lakers have been winning a little more (thanks, refs ;) ).

So how about tonight? Predictions?

Mine: Lakers 110, Kings 104.

Hmmm wasnt it you who laughed at me when I said the Kings were better without Webber....... No, I've never (meant to) trumpet Webber's abilities, or his contributions to the team.

(I did one time point out that he shouldn't necessarily be known for choking in big games anymore, since he has played well the last 2 years in them.)

I think he's tremendously overrated (mainly due to his stats that don't tell the real story), and the team regularly plays worse when he's on the roster.

I don't believe it's a coincidence that the Kings play hard and well, have good energy and play smart when he's out.
There's something about his complacency, stupidity, and blase' attitude that brings out the laziness and bad playmaking in the Kings as a whole.

I think the Kings would have had a chance to win the championship this year without Webber, if they continued playing like they did and didn't have injuries in the playoffs this time.

WITH Webber...... they won't win unless he starts playing MUCH better. And since most everyone who's had that surgery has taken well over a year to get back to form (if ever), and with Webber being notoriously slow in healing.... well, make of those observations/opinions what you will.

BTW: The Kings are SACRIFICING their position in the playoff seedings by letting Webber continue to play when he's stinking up the joint. They are gambling that Webber will get better, and contribute enough in the playoffs (in the long run) to make up for him making the team worse (in the short run).

It's a ballsy strategy, and very Phil Jackson-like (give up the regular season for postseason chances). I'm sure Lakers fans would recognize it, and perhaps appreciate it.

El Scorcho

I think one of the main problems with the Kings and Webber is that Webber being *on* the court takes one excellent big man passer (either Miller or Divac) off of the court. Miller and Divac on the same court was a great combination.

SleepyW
03-24-04, 04:32 PM
I don't think Webber has ever had a positive impact for the Kings when they've played the Lakers. Now that he's still not 100%, L.A. should be able to neutralize him. It's Bibby and Jackson that usually hurt the Lakers...except in the playoffs when they miss wide open jumpers at the buzzer. :D

MJKTool
03-24-04, 04:37 PM
Yeah that SOB Bibby wories me alot more than the Choker. He always seems to hit every goddamn shot when he plays against the Lakers.

Webber's been known as one of the best passing big men in the game, so I don't understand this. Anyway, I think the Kings do need a win to boost morale. Both teams have basically all of their players (except Jackson for the Kings), and the Kings have been struggling lately. A win isn't necessary, but it would help.

reapersaurus
03-24-04, 09:18 PM
I'm hoping that the Lakers haven't found a defense against the pick-n-roll that killed them all game last game. :D

And for the record - the Lakers need this victory MUCH more than the Kings do.
If the Kings win, it's OVER for the Lakers chances to catch up to them.
If the Lakers win, it's just one (or 2) closer to the Kings (which can be significantly nullified if the Kings win in Sacto).

Guys - this game's over.
It was over at 2 minutes into the game, when the Kings started suffering from the same crap-shooting-itis that has plagued them recently.
The LAkers are giving them the jump shot, daring them to beat them with it, and the way they're playing right now, there is no way they can just suddenly start shooting like they did earlier in the season.

13 straight misses in a row tends to put you in a hole that they can't play out of (considering how bad the Kings have been playing, and how well the Lakers are playing tonight).

We'll see how the next game goes in Sacto. Maybe by then Webber's sickness will have gotten out of the whole team's system.

When Slava Medvedenko is money from 19 feet on in, you know you're in for a tough night.

There is no way in hell that anyone can beat the Lakers if they play like that in the playoffs. That's a guarantee. Every single Laker was on fire. Kobe was inhuman. Nobody in the NBA (with the possible exception of Peja) can be beyond the 3 pt arc, with a guy guarding him, and still make the shot.

What doesn't make sense is .... why does it take the Kings to have the Lakers play like this? I mean, if the Lakers could play like this every night, they would never have problems.

You can only bust out the God card when you're stuck in some deep shit, I guess. ;)

You know, just once I'd love to hear this exchange in the losing team's locker room:

Listen up, cause here's some more whacked predictions that you guys can book:

It's interesting to me that the Lakers decided to show their hand tonight, finally.

I'd imagine that every playoff team recorded this game, and will be watching it VERY closely, because this is exactly the kind of stuff they'll be seeing in the playoffs.

I thought (and feared) that the Lakers were "playing down" so as not to be outrageously successful. Outrageous success pisses off people, and really brings into question the level playing field that supposedly exists in the NBA. The injuries just made it so they didn't have to worry about that - yet. If they'd been healthy all year, I really don't think they'd have bothered with trying for the best record ever.... PJ's all about the championships.

And with this team (playing like they did tonight), it's gonna be a walk in the park.
Mark my words - I predict that MANY people will be complaining in June (or even earlier) about how unfair it was for PAyton and Malone to sign with the Lakers for chump change, just to give em a championship.
It set a VERY ugly precedent, and it's just gonna take 2 1/2 months for that to be revealed to everyone. [/book]

Sounds like it should be a Leon commercial. True.

Anyway, i still don't see how Payton/Malone signing is unfair, and i doubt it'll set a precedent. Atheletes have had the chance to do this for years in all sports, and rarely do players ever put their money where their mouth is.

[/book]

Is your name Chris Webber by any chance?

Well....

I didn't catch any patented Floppy Diva flops. :(

but...

-Webber looked totally lost...didn't know what he was doing...looked like he wasn't even in the game....also...he's a bitch
-Christie had no clue on how to guard Kobe. It seemed like he was looking at the floor for some reason for 80% of the game. Searching for inspiriation from the ground?
-Bibby was being annoying as hell. Why does he dress on the court like an oversized toddler? And can't one of his teammates just tell him to shut the hell up?
-Vlade gave the term "stiff" a new definition. He didn't seem like he wanted to move at all tonight. Did he even get off the ground at all? He didn't even have enough energy to flop!
-Miller gave up on a lot of balls. He wasn't very effective at all on either side of the court. I think for tonight's game, Pollard would have done a better job.
-Can't fault Stojakovic though. That guy's a good guy. I like him. He looks professional and didn't let the game get to his head like the other Kings' players. I feel sorry for him that Webber is taking all the offense away from him.
-BJax wasn't missed much since Peeler went 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from the 3-point line.
-What the hell happened to the King's deep bench from the last couple of years?

I hope Slava has some more good games like tonight's left in him. I don't really have any hope for him, but wish he would be more consistent. What the heck did Phillip say to him before the game? Also....lots of good hussle plays by the Lakers that were big sparks for them. Fox got on the floor, Fisher got on the floor, Slava got on the floor. Lakers shoot 19 of 24 from the FT line. Awesome

Let's continue this roll on Friday. :)

It doesn't matter if you see how it's unfair: you're a fan of the team it benefits.

Every other team, and every fan who is not a fan of the Lakers (i.e. the majority of the NBA fans) will not see it as fair when they waltz to a championship solely because 2 Hall of Fame players hitched their trailer to the Lakers in a known example of collusion (i.e. Malone and Payton went together, partly because/if the other went) and desperate ploy to get a ring (something that has avoided each of them their whole careers).

And it hasn't happened before, because (deleted my feelings about it).

Just FYI:
Divac hasn't flopped hardly at all this season.
He may be known for it historically, but it's not part of his game much anymore at all.

And what happened to the Kings bench?
Simple - $$$$$$
In an effort to get a championship, the Kings mortgaged their future and depth on big salaries to the guys that had played well for them: Webber, Christie, and Bibby.
Combined with Divac's huge salary, it made it so the Maloofs couldn't afford to keep Keon Clark (injured now, but that's beside the point), or Jim Jackson. They had to trade Scot Pollard and Hedo Turkoglu to get Divac's successor, Brad Miller.

This leaves them with not much depth.

Well...yeah...that's why I mentioned that he didn't have enough energy to flop. :)

As for the bench. I knew that. It was just a rhetorical question since the Kings once had the strongest bench in the league and traded it all away for Miller who they owe $7,875,000; $8,750,000; $9,625,000; $10,500,000; $11,375,000; and $12,250,000 over the next 6 years.

They owe Christie $7,150,000 and $7,800,000 for the next 2 years.

They owe Bibby $10,500,000; $11,500,000; $12,500,000; $13,500,000; and $14,500,000 for the next 5 years.

But the most painful of all...the untradable-in-today's market Webber they owe:
$17,531,250; $19,125,000; $20,718,750; and $22,312,500 for the next 4 years! He makes Shaq, Duncan, and Garnett money and isn't half as dominate as any of them.

Yeah, someone on ESPN was saying how they might start Miller now, but it is so late in the season to be making starting line-up adjustments. What's worse is that Adelman has not found a way to mix everyone into the offense, particularly Webber.

Well i'm curious to know your feelings on it, because i still don't believe the likelihood of it happening often in any sport (with the NBA the most likely, since individuals affect the game much more). The majority of players will always take the big payday when they can, particularly the young stars today. I don't think Payton/Malone will set a precedent for it occuring, sans maybe a few occasions where we see an aging star look for a ring. Keep in mind, Barkley joining Hakeem and Clyde on the Rockets didn't pan out... although all 3 were in the twilight of their careers. Funny, that both Barkley, Payton, and Malone were all denied championships because of Jordan though :)

Anyway, while i'm a bit more supportive because i'm a Laker fan, i've always been a fan of team loyalty. I would have loved to see Payton retire a Sonic, Malone a Jazz... and hope that Reggie Miller retires a Pacer. But when you've done everything else in the NBA except win the big one, its probably especially hard to leave the game empty handed. And as much as it may cheapen the win, i still think it shows character that at this point in their careers, there are more important things then money.

Dude, they have more money than God.

Count up how many millions they've made in their career of VERY high-paid seasons, and then ask yourself:

"Hmmm... would I rather have 3% more to my career salary, or would I like a ring to cap my Hall of Fame career (coincidentally everyone has always pointed out how that's the one thing lacking in my career)."

It doesn't show character at ALL that they'd choose an almost-sure Ring over some chump change (for them).

To me, it shows a desperation that weakens their career, not strengthens it. What would show character is if they went to a team and built them into a contender with their leadership, experience, and skills.

Payton and Malone are money-grabbing whores, it's as simple as that - it's just that they're not being paid in cash, but in the all-important currency of a championship ring.

The Lakers played tonight like they did in most of the 18 or so wins they had before Malone went down with injury. So the Lakers playing great tonight wasn't something totally new. Teams already had a chance to see how the Lakers could play when they were all hot. During the 5 home stand early in the season (late November) they were blowing out teams by an average of about 20 points, including Memphis, Indiana, and San Antonio. Hopefully tonight was the start of the Lakers blowing out teams consistently like they did at the beginning of the season.

And I don't buy into the whole thing about the Lakers playing down purposely to deceive the rest of the league, because if they could play like tonight any time they wanted, then they should have won the 3rd meeting against the T'Wolves in Minnesota. That was a big game because with the win, the T'Wolves now hold the tie breaker against the Lakers should their records be tied at the end of the season. Regardless of the Lakers confidence of winning big games on the road, I'm sure they would PREFER home court advantage. The Lakers will be the favorite if they play like they did tonight consistently, but they are not invincible.

The problem is that you can say that about all the stars in the league as far as money goes, yet it still hasn't been done. You still didn't say why you feel it hasn't been done before. And personally, i think the answer is because players still care about their paycheck first and foremost. No matter how you spin it, playing for 4 million dollars is a lot different then playing for 10 million. Considering how many players go into contract disputes over amounts like that, i think its silly to waive it off as insignificant.

Especially the way the Lakers are playing.
Even WITH all 4 of the vaunted HoF's.
It's fun to bring up old shit like this :)

Since March 14th, the Lakers are 5-0 with 11 games to go. The Kings are 3-4 with 10 games to go. So now, the Lakers only have to go 9-2 while the Kings go 5-3 to finish the season (assuming a Lakers win over the Kings). Not too hard to imagine now :)

If the Kings can survive the Texas roadtrip - @SA, @DAL, @HOU and beat the Lakers at home, they can probably pull off the win in the Pacific. But if the Lakers win @SAC, there are only two other road games for them, @SEA and @POR (rotfl) to finish the season.

A how is that accomplished sitting on the bench? You really think Payton and Malone could make a team like Golden State into a contender. There's no guarantee that they can do that within 2 years. Malone is 41, Payton is 36. They don't have the time to help build a team. How many times did Seattle try to build a team around Payton? It got them to the Finals in 1991 and that was it. Malone would have been in Utah without Stockton this year. The Jazz have totally changed their style of play to suit the new guys. Malone wasn't going to wait around for them to gel when he's got maybe 1 or 2 years left in his career.

I see nothing wrong with wanting a Championship ring. What would be considered whoring yourself is if they went to the Nets, Pacers or Pistons. That would guarantee a spot in the finals. :p

But anyhoo, I have serious doubts about that - he does live in Newport though - right? MJKTool - OK, the kid gloves are obviously off and no mod is in here to stop you guys from being personal, so let me share this smack-talking:

Tool, you're a tool.
(deleted personal comment, even tho The Tool won't)
You constantly amaze me at how you can mangle even simple communication.

Don't project your offenses onto me: You Laker fans are known for commenting on how awesome your team is. Don't you dare try to turn that around on me, acting like I've been in here guaranteeing victories and beat-downs and the like.
That's a Laker fans tired schtick.

I've been in here commenting about the good things about my team - what the hell else do you expect me to do, idiot?

I said multiple times "Let's see what happens when they play each other."
And before the game, I made it pretty clear (I thought) that the Kings would lose. So don't make it out like I changed my mind about that.

And what the **** do you EXPECT me to do, Tool? The Lakers just served up an object lesson for the entire league.
Would you like me to keep talking smack, or would you like me to stop talking smack? Cause you know, your opinion means so very much to me.
As far as I'm concerned, unless the Lakers suffer some injuries, it is abundantly clear that they will waltz to a championship this year. It won't even be close. Why don't you guys who saw the game tell me who can compete with that kind of onslaught?
The T-Wolves, the Spurs.... no way can they compete with that.
The only thing that can stop them is if they stop playing like that (in other words, themselves.)

I have been pretty consistent in calling Malone and Payton whores for joining a guaranteed champion (if healthy).

I am glad I took every opportunity I could to bash the Lakers when I could, because I knew there wouldn't be that many to this year. Everyone knew before the season started that 4 HoF's would guarantee a ring. Everyone forgot about that when the injuries happened (that's to be expected). Now it will be clear again to everyone how obscene it is to have 4 HoF's on one team.

They are too egotistical to lose too many times. They will HAVE to crush people, and they will offend MANY fans of BB in the progress. They can only take the victim approach ("oh - Bibby danced when he beat us here last time!" *gasp*) so far.

Be prepared for the backlash.

As far as I'm concerned, unless the Lakers suffer some injuries, it is abundantly clear that they will waltz to a chamionship this year.

I'm curious - do you Laker fans think that you're actually a true fan of a sport?
Do you think you have any backbone, or true spirit, cheering for a perennial winner?
The Lakers are the most successful franchise in sports the last 25 years years (AFAIK).

Like I've stated many times, winning *gasp* isn't the most important thing.
Only a Laker fan, who hasn't had to lose that much, can be so utterly obsessed with winning it all.
I am disappointed in Kings fans who have bought into the fallacy that unless they win it all, it's a wasted season.
In fighting the enemy these many years, they have taken on quite a few characteristics of Laker fans. And it's sickening.

The Kings have done themselves proud, actually competing with the best the NBA has for years. They rose from NOTHING, thru sheer hardwork and true teamwork, not relying on the freakish talent of 2 unsportsmanlike superstars to win ugly.

So Laker fans - Don't break your arms patting yourselves on the backs for standing behind a powerhouse that is favored more than any other franchise in sports (both in officiating of the game and in talent acquisition - at least the Yankees have to pay their garishly over-stocked roster market value to play for them).

So fans of winning teams aren't real fans of the sport? I'm sorry, but considering the majority of fans ususally take a favor to their hometown, i guess basketball lovers in Southern California aren't really basketball fans unless they cheer for the Clippers. Baseball fans in New York have to love the Mets more than the Yankees. Give me a break. I'm from southern california and i've lived their pretty much my entire life. Of course i'm going to cheer for a team that i can actually watch on TV and attend their games.

I don't understand why you would shrug off the seasons when a team plays poorly just because of a history of success. A true fan is someone that continues to watch and cheer for their team during those moments. Not every team can stay on top forever. If you're a Bulls fan today, all the more power to you. Where were all the Kings fans and cowbells when Mitch Richmond was putting in 20 a game for what.. 8 straight seasons?

I personally have fun cheering for the Daveys (it worked the last three Baseball seasons). Can't see myself cheering for the Yankees or Lakers unless I lived there. There is no fun in backing a team that dominate every year unless its your home team.

I'll continue to cheer the Spurs and hope Duncan can carry them on his back again. Doubt anyone can stop the 4HOF Laker juggernaught this year though.

One thing to note though. I don't consider the Kings or Mavericks as Davey teams. They have big payrolls and plenty of stars on their teams. They are Goliaths, but their problem is they have a much bigger Goliath in the Lakers to deal with.

It's not exactly a surprise that the Sacramento Kings don't have a ring.

You're comparing the Lakers with the Kings, in a championship standpoint?!?
Don't you think it's kind of pathetic to have to tout the fact that the most favored franchise in professional sports has more championships than a franchise which has been in NBA obscurity for almost 5 decades (since the Royals won the ring)?

Try to stretch your creativity at least, and come up with something about the Lakers franchise that's better than the Kings that DOESN'T involve the number of championships they've gotten.

That's like the USA being so taken in with the competition coming from some small country like Brazil and saying "Hey, Brazil - we make more GNP than you! Scoreboard! We've won more wars than you! Ha haa!"

P.S. Attacking grammer and writing skills online is a rather poor insult. I think there are some Laker fans that are good fans of the sport, but for the most part - NO, Laker fans can't be true fans of the sport, because the ridiculous success is a anathema to the spirit of a game.

Most sports only have winning as a rare thing - for a fan to be spoiled by constant success IS an obstacle to truly being a fan of the sport.

I have heard multiple times on this board where people have pointed out the "dark days" of Sedale Threat, etc.
Give me a BREAK! It's an insult to sports fans everywhere for a Laker fan to ever cloak themselves as an underdog, or struggling franchise.
It rings laughably hollow.
http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs00/s/almanac/history/lal.html

And to answer your direct question:
True Kings fans WERE there even before Mitch Richmond helped to at least put Sacramento on the NBA map.
True Kings fans supported their team when they were so bad, they moved from Kansas City with NO prospects for success, and nobody wanted to play here.
True Kings fans have watched the team grow from a terminally-uncompetetive team, to someone that the ultra-successful Lakers actually go out of their way to compete against.

Any fan that became one in the last 5 years is NOT a true Kings fan, in my eyes, with very few exceptions. I might grant a one-year exception to any fan from 98-99.

P.S. my typo criticism was 3-fold.
It segue-wayed into a reply to The Tool, it let me bridge to movielib's incredibly coinicidental typo, and "loose" is a pet peeve of mine.
I'll bet that The Tool actually thinks 'lose' IS spelt ;) "loose".
It's an incredibly common (and embarassing) mistake nowadays.

Also, I don't mind spelling mistakes most of the time. There are TONS here that I don't point out, and don't mind, by both you guys and me.
Typos are not the issue. It's when someone makes themselves look ignorant by misunderstanding the WORD "loose".
And when a misspelled word means something worlds apart from what was intended, like "inciteful".

BTW: for those that don't get the joke, "inciteful" kinda means "to incite", meaning to cause a flaring up of emotions or conflict.
Which ironically, The Tool did, as was his intention.
It was a MUCH more "inciteful" post, than it was "insightful".

I disagree. In every sport there are a few teams that have a history of winning. In the NBA, you can count the Boston Celtics right up there with the Lakers, if not higher since they've won more championships. Baseball has, of course, the Yankees (it doesn't seem like you're a baseball fan, but if you are, you must loathe the Yankees even more then the Lakers :)). I'm not too familiar with the NHL, but just looking at the history of Stanley Cup winners you see a collection of the same teams.

I don't think that fans of these teams should be regarded in a lesser light simply because the majority of them happen to live in the same city as a winning team. I think being enthusastic about maintaining a winning team from the fans is a good thing for the sport... it drives teams to strive for success. I don't see Clipper fans being better simply because they cheer on a team whose owner has no desire on building success. .

I think being enthusastic about maintaining a winning team from the fans is a good thing for the sport... it drives teams to strive for success.I agree here.

But I don't think that using that extended success as a battering ram to simultaneously prop up any feelings of inadequacy and at the same time shove down every other team's throat like it's some fault of the Nuggets or Sonics that they didn't have Kareem, Worthy, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, etc is some fault of theirs.

I've got no problem with Laker fans who are simply fans of the team, the great history, who live around LA and like that their team wins.

I DO have a problem when they are outrageously insulting, bad winners, and purposely rack the muck and try to make it out like the Kings and their fans are the ones that started shit, or are the ones that are boastful and arrogant.

Laker fans SHOULD be the most classy in the NBA - they get nothing but favorable officiating in the playoffs(overall, and historically), and they have the entertainment capital of the world as a main reason why they get such superstars to join their team.
They have the most success of anyone in the modern era.
Why can't their fans be good sports, and congratulate people for trying hard, and when they succeed?
Why do they always have to be such a$$es about things?
Why do they have to be so Shaq-like, and brutish, elevating thuggery to the NBA winner's podium, for god's sake (what an embarrasment to the sport, BTW).

And I've been a Laker fan since 1958 when they were in Minneapolis. I was 11 and I became a Laker fan not because they were good (they stunk at the time) but because when I started watching the NBA I thought this rookie by the name of Elgin Baylor was the coolest guy ever. I sure didn't know they had won 5 NBA championships already with a guy named George Mikan. I sure didn't know they would pick up Jerry West a couple of seasons later and become one of the best teams in the league. I still had to suffer through many 7 game losses to the Celtics in the Finals and didn't get a title until 1972. It's my 46th season as a Laker fan. Of course, I also hate the Celtics.

I've also been a Chicago White Sox fan for about as long and I guess people can accuse me of backing a winner there.
