deadwood pilot 3/21/04

I know i'm a day early, but i was wondering how good the buzz on this show is.

"Deadwood"...a hell of a place to make your fortune. In this original HBO series the year is 1876 and it's two weeks after Custer's Last Stand at Little Big Horn. Deadwood, located on a tract of stolen land in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is in the grip of gold fever, attracting outlaws, carpet-baggers, greenhorns, miners, prostitutes, ex-soldiers, and ex-lawmen. And, because the town was settled on land ceded to the Sioux nation, no U.S. warrant is recognized there; it's entirely lawless. Combining fictional and real-life figures, such as Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) "Deadwood" is the wild west as it might have been and probably was. "Deadwood" is from award-winning writer/producer David Milch ("NYPD Blue") and the stellar cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, and Ian McShane. You can learn more on the official site, which includes bios, video downloads and more. "Deadwood" premieres Sunday, March 21st, 10pm/9c on HBO, immediately following "The Sopranos"

one question, is this only going to be one season ? from what i hear, its a 12 part series, but was wondering if there is a possibility for a season 2?

Depends on 2 things:

how many people watch season 1, and how many GG and Emmy noms it gets.

I'm not going to waste my time on this show. I mean, I can't remember the last time HBO had anything good on.

Not since Arliss was cancelled, at least.

Das:

I saw some interview with one of the actors from the show. The interviewer was quoting what I think was a NY Times review, saying it could be hard to watch at times (it has no music apparently), and it takes some time to develop characters, but if you stuck with it it became addictive.

Isn't this based on a book or something?

HBO has many good shows: Band of Brothers, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, just to name a few.

Bah! I saw Saving Private Ryan already, who wants to watch a whiny chick show with a fugly lead (oooo, they use naughty words ... that's sooooooo shocking ), and a show about talking dead people? Whatever. Give me Tru Calling any day. Plus, I don't have to "subscribe" to see it.

Gotta admit, though ... I did like that Arli$$ show. "I represent athletes. These are my stories." Great stuff. And they had the real athletes on there too! Remember that episode where one of the clients has a problem with too much partying, Rita is trying to get some guy to have sex with her, and Kirby ends up housesitting another client's annoying kid (or maybe it was the cat)? OMG, that episode had me in stitches. Is it on the DVDs? If so, I have to get those! It's a shame all their shows can't be that good. Saves me money, though, so that's good.

Although Westerns aren't my cup of tea, I'll be checking it out.

It's said to be the most foul-mouthed western ever.

Did they even know of the obscenities they're using back then? This show is really hard to follow right now. What exactly was it that happened at the beginning? I couldn't really tell.

from the review in the phila inquirer today. here

"deadwood has more profanity per minute then any other series in tv history,..."
"he (milch) spent more then a year researching deadwood."

"That's the way they spoke," he told the critics, regaling them with tales of ear-witnesses and analysis by H.L. Mencken. "The lawlessness of the language is... something that I hope people will get used to. It establishes an atmosphere, verbally, in which anything is possible. It is the rejection of everything, except brute force."

There are no firm plans yet to extend the 12-episode series, but Milch was asked about bringing Deadwood back.

The camp, he responded, constantly reinvented itself. All the gold was gone from the surface within a year, when William Randolph Hearst's father, George, bought up the claims and brought in Chinese laborers to sink shafts.

A cyanide cloud, a byproduct of the gold separation process, hung over the town. There was a flood, so the buildings were put up on stilts, and the Chinese moved underneath and joined with whites to establish opium dens. Women were brought in as prostitutes, given opium, and worked till they died.

"And the whites," Milch said, "would cut trapdoors into the bottoms of their buildings so they could descend and not be seen... . So there [were] the floors of hell and the cyanide cloud above it... .

"So the answer is, 'Yeah. You could do a second season.' "

Truth. I am no prude but it only took about two minutes for the gratuitous profanity to turn me off and for me to move on. Strange statement from someone who truly enjoys The Sopranos I guess. I serously doubt most people used that level of profanity in normal conversation during that era. It just seemed so out of place and unnatural that I couldn't get past it. IMO the profanity served no purpose... it was just thrown in for cheap shock value.

It only took me about 2 minutes to get used to the language.

I liked it. I'm not sure what else could have happened in the first episode that could have made it fast.

I'm not sure how it could be considered slow....and yes, they did talk that way all the way back then I was curious as to why they didn't mention the Little Big Horn...that was in June 1876 when this was supposedly taking place in July 1876. They would have only just heard about it and it raised a helluva fervor just about everywhere, and especially in western towns.

I thought it was great...and now i have an excuse to sit on my ass for another hour on Sunday nights.....

i thought it was a little slow because the plot didn't really seem to move forward.

I wouldn't have even noticed the language had someone not said something about it. We're way too sensitive about this stuff. There's no shock value, or at least there shouldn't be; people talk that way (and likely talked worse in these outlaw towns) ... next. Calamity Jane was a bit over the top, but that's the way history remembers her, so it makes sense. She has to be that way to maintain her image.

Great casting job. I don't know how they got Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton, and Meat Loaf to star in this thing, but I'm impressed. All kidding aside, it did feel like they watched Tombstone a few hundred times before casting this sucker, especially when you consider Paula Malcomson with Powers Booth on the way, not that I mind or anything. It really is a fantastic cast, but HBO always seems to assemble a talented cast that the average viewer may not know by name, but probably soon will. Always good to see William Sanderson, as well as fellow B5 alums Ian McShane and Brad Dourif, who seems perfectly cast as the Doc. The seemingly ubiquitous Jeffrey Jones as the reporter is just perfect, and it's certainly nice to see the hottie Rabbi from Six Feet Under again.

I don't see why the plot would seem slow, as quite a bit happened. All sorts of threads were set up, and I'm really interested to see where they all go. Milch has already proven himself, so I'm not doubting that he has good plans ahead. Solid start. HBO rarely lets me down, and I don't see signs of it happening here.

Anyone else think that the sheriff at the beginning was just faking the hanging of that guy? I was actually surprised when he really did hang him. The show was pretty good and should get better as time goes on. I don't understand why that one guy killed the guy who helped swindle the rich man for 20k though. I'll watch it next week.

Really enjoyed it... next weeks episode looks like it could be pretty tense. It seemed like a lot happened in one hour. Didn't feel slow, though it did feel longer than an hour, probably because of all the different storylines they were setting up.

I thought Jefrey Jones went down for child porn?

Pretty good debut. Calamity Jane was highly annoying. Wild Bill was straight out of the Big Lebowski. The dude abides, indeed.
