read a rumor that when this gets released hear theatrically in a few weeks, its gonna be the 117 min version and not the long 180 min version that most of the other countries got.

Lion's Gate is releasing it, I'm a little surprised they would cut it down.

bummer if that's true - I was looking forward to it.

(Checks for Region 2 DVD...)

Good question.

It's playing twice in Chicago in the next week as part of a European film festival. I'm going to try to catch the Wednesday screening. If someone has any better information, I, too, would be curious.

EDIT: The theater that is screening Dogville lists its running time as 177 minutes. That's the best I can do.

Individual theaters that are doing one or two-time showings (like the American Cinematheque in LA and at the European Film Festival in Chicago) screen the uncut version. However, the main release in the U.S. WILL be cut. However, this cut is approved by Von Trier. I have no plans on seeing this cut, as I have the Korean DVD.

I'm sure the irony of having to provide a shorter cut for American audiences was not lost on Von Trier, considering the film in question. I wonder if he found the whole thing funny, sad, or a little bit of both...<sigh>

The cut was originally made for Italy, if I'm not mistaken. It was definitely previously made for another European country, and this is the same shortened cut.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago (here in Columbus OH) and it was the 177 minute version. It is my understanding that the US theatrical release version will be the same, i.e., uncut.

Dogville is a superb movie, btw.

The National Gallery of Arts print in January was the 177min version. probably that seven got inadvertantly changed to a one somehow.

Having seen it, I'm willing to bet that if it plays in your area, you'll end up spending 8.50 + 29.99...

I work at the Landmark in Chicago and can confirm the European running time of 177 will stay at least on our print.

Alternate Versions for
Dogville (2003)

* To fit the needs of some local distributors, in Italy among others, assistant director Anders Refn cut a version of Dogville which is about 45 minutes shorter than the original. The version was accepted and approved by director Lars von Trier.

Same here. Actually seeing 2 movies there during the day tomorrow (home on spring break). Good to know that they'll have the full cut. I got worried when I read this and tried to pick up tickets for the Siskel Film Center, but they're all sold out.

Any print in the states will be the three-hour cut. Nobody has to worry.

Cool! Working Saturday night? I'll be up watching Intermission, probably the 10 o'clock show.

Back on topic... yeah, the US is getting the full, long cut of the film.

Canada is getting the 178 minute cut.

Lions Gate screened it for critics in Vancouver (and I'm assuming Toronto) yesterday.

Excellent film.

Can't wait to see this film. Why did it take so long for the film to get released in the states?

That's the only time length I have read about, too.

I read a great quote from Rotten Tomatoes (and I'm pretty sure I'd agree with it - the film sounds awful):

"The acting is ice cold. The dialogue is lethargic. And if we're going to sit through any movie that's 177 minutes, it better have some Hobbits in it. There are no Hobbits here, so stay home."
