Soap - for a funny show, it sure ended on a downer

I'm sure everyone's seen the show, so do spoilers apply? I'll just play it safe...

Spoiler:
You have Jessica Tate shot to death in a firing squad and Burt Campbell stabbed to death in the temple
in the show's final scenes.

Was it originally intended to be a cliff-hanger when it was suddenly cancelled? Or did they intend to end the show this way?

I believe there were other tragedies, but I don't remember. There was surely some unfinished business.

It was simply to be the end of season set of cliff-hangers... then the show got cancelled. When I watched this in reruns when it 1st re-aired on Comedy Central, I was MEGA PISSED by the ending as well!

Damn, I don't remember that ending! One of the funniest shows I've ever seen though.

I think we had this discussion a couple years ago -- IIRC, Jessica appeared on Benson a couple years later (well, her "spirit" did) and told Benson that she was in a coma somewhere in South America.
