What's up with "Mazinkaizer"?

I wasn't sure where this should go because, although this is a TV show, I've only seen it on DVD and don't think it aired anywhere. Yet, I'm not going to talk about the DVD per se so it sure doesn't belong in the DVD forum. And as far as I know the review forum is only for reviewing the dics themeselves and not the actual content. This definitely doesn't belong in the movie forum. At least, I don't think so. So I appologize to the mods if I started this thread where it doesn't belong.

Anyhoo, I just got both volumes of this mini-series at my local SAM's and after watching the whole thing in one go last night.... What were they smoking? It's starts out great with two flat out amazing episodes and then it suddenly goes down the toilet with too much T&A humour and really unfunny zanyness and very little of Mazinkaizer. Had I payed for a zany comedy with boobs bouncing every five minutes I'd've been happy. But I payed to see robots kick the crap out of each other.

Out of the seven episodes of the whole series, only four deliver. The first two and the last two. It's as if they had what could have been a great 2 hour movie and stretched into a 7-part mini-series with not enough story to carry it for that long. What the heck happened? At first I assumed that the team that developed the first two episodes was changed for the others but apparently the same people worked on it from start to finish. I mean, the T&A humour was so extreme they even had people drooling over Venus Ace and suddenly the animation of her breast missles was WAAAAY exagerated. I just don't get why they screwed this show up that way. Was Go Nagai really ever involved or was the name just tacked on the dupe people like me into watching this?

Please tell me the next Mazinger series (if there ever is one) wont be like this.

Before I go, on a weird not, Christopher Lambert is billed as one of the additional voices in the English speaking dub but I couldn't figure out who he was in the show. I mean, in Max Payne 2 I was able to point out Kevin Conroy every time he voiced a character but not Christopher Lambert in this show. Is there actually another Christopher Lambert out there?

I have the these discs and I kinda agree about the potty humor. But then again many Japanese cartoons are like that but we never see it here Stateside due to censoring. Have you ever seen the mature scenes from Dragonball Z? I've seen many "Japanese kids cartoons" with adult humor. It's different culture and they don't have the hang ups like Americans do.

BTW, according to imdb.com it IS Christopher Lambert from the Highlander movies.

Giantrobo,

Yeah, I know a lot of Japanese cartoons use this type of humor. And, yes, I'd seen the uncut versions of Dragonball and Dragonball Z long before I saw their sanitized versions. But the humor just doesn't fit with a Mazinger show and I remember when I used to watch the old uncut Mazinger Z episodes when I was a kid, they were more like the first two episodes of this new series. Buy episode 3 they shift gears too drastically and it really kills the show. If they insisted on the pervy style humour I would have prefered the subtle touch seen in the first episode or how it was incorporated in episodes 6 and 7. Sure, the latter two had more of this type of humor than the first episode but it's much more acceptable than the centre stage this type of humor takes in epsodes 3, 4 and 5.

Wow! So it really was him! I wonder how they convinced him to work on it. More importantly, I wonder who he was in the first few episodes.
