Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy

It’ll prompt you to enter a language application packet, just keep hitting cancel.

http://www.steamboy.net/intro.shtml

I have been waiting for this for more than 8 years since Sci Fi channel had an anime special. (The same special that previewed Jin Roh and Blood and tortured me for years with the wait.) The torture has begun anew no that I see the imagery for this one. The little preview on some anime disc I rented just showcased the CGI. The actual art looks incredible and I’m hoping that the preview on this site shows more of that than just atmosphere and some vehicles like the one I saw did.
IMDB has the reason it was delayed for so long. Hooray again for Studio I.G. for letting this see the light of day.

Now to get de heck home so I can check it out with sound and download the trailer!

I love Otomo's artistic style! It seems to go against the grain in the Anime world.

Incredible...

The trailer for Steamboy shows nothing less than a cinematic event!!! I just saw the trailer and boy, did it bring out the total fanboy/geek in me!!!

I know Otomo-san always does his anime works fm out of the ordinary, but the trailer seems to have a mainstream appeal of having the lead character as some sort of "hero."

This is going to be one of those situations where Ebert creams his pants, but it gets a 2 day screening in three theaters in the country.

(And they won't be sold out.)

Looks gorgeous, which is no less than what I would expect from Otomo. I have no idea what the film is about, though, besides having a European-looking setting, what may be a Jules Verne-ish influence (like Miyazaki's stuff?) and a funny title.

FYI

the trailer is on the "Kaene: The Prophecy" DVD

it looks amazing!

even though the end of the trailer says the generic "Coming Soon", anyone know when Columbia/TriStar is releasing this theatrically in the states?

Metropolis was excellent and I've been looking forward to this one. Wired did an article a short time ago on the resurgence of anime full-length movies here:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.09/anime.html

It talks about Steamboy and Howl's Moving Castle among other films.

A friend of mine saw it in Japan. She thought it was a bit boring, and just OK, but she isn't really a big anime fan, so her opinion hasn't swayed me from wanting to see it.

There's also a (slightly different) trailer for this film on the US Release of the Kaena: The Prophecy DVD.

Not that it matters, but its there

you know, RichC2, if you scrolled up a little bit, you would have noticed that I also noted that the trailer for this is on the "Kaene" DVD, if your comment was on another page I'd excuse you, but... oh whatever,

See, this is why I don't post while drunk anymore.

I make enough mistakes while sober.

Looks like I piqued your interest, eh Tom?

BTW, Memories has been added to my "short list" of movies to buy soon.

Yep, you sure did I suddenly realized that "Hey, wasn't this supposed to come out sometime soon?" I checked a few sites... nothing... so I knew there was a thread around here somewhere.

Thanks for the info, RyoHazuki. Hopefully it won't be a limited release.

according to Landmark Theatre's flyer, it looks like the US theatrical edition of the film is dubbed - grrr, guess we'll have to wait for the eventual DVD to hear the original Japanese language soundtrack.

Grrr is right. Do they ever release subtitled anime in the theater? I'm with you, I'll be waiting for the DVD I guess.

Ehhh . . . I think that all depends on how it's done. I've been really pleased with the dub work that Disney has done with the Ghibli titles. If Steamboy is done as well, I would be perfectly happy with it.

Plus . . . the DVD will have the original language . . . that'd be good enough for me. I don't need that w/ subs in the theatrical release.
