redundant hdtv receiver/vcr connections?
How come I see VCR instructions with setups like this:
Antenna's coaxial line runs to VCR's Ant Input.
VCR's Ant Output coaxial to TV's Ant Input.
VCR's Composite Output to TV's Composite Input.
What are the compsite connections for? It seems to record/play fine without it, even if I record one channel and watch another.
Almost Same for HDTV Receiver instructions:
Antenna's coaxial line runs to HDTV Receiver's Ant Input.
HDTV Receiver's Ant Output coaxial to TV's Ant Input.
HDTV Receiver's DVI Output to TV's DVI Input.
In this case I don't know what the "HDTV Receiver's Ant Output coaxial to TV's Ant Input" is for. The DVI works fine alone.

In the case of the VCR instructions the composite connection option will allow you better resolution when watching through those inputs, compared to the coaxial. I'm pretty sure the same could be said with the DVI connection on the HDTV setup.

Alright. So I do I know it's using the composite over the coax if both are plugged in? Is it just automatic or do I have to switch to some other mode (video 1?) instead of channel 3?

First, running the coaxial from antenna to vcr to tv (or STB instead of vcr) is to allow the antenna signal to pass through to the tv allowing you to use the tv's built-in tuner.
In the case of the vcr, if you only used the coaxial, you get your vcr signal on channel 3 (or 4). Composite allows you to get it on a video input.
