I loaded the Vanilla Sky & Amatuer soundtracks onto my iPOD this mornign to listen to at work - I keep listening to the Red House Painters tracks (1 from each) on the soundtracks - they're really good.
Can anyone let me know which alnums are the best from them?

I really like the Red House Painters, so I think it's a can't-miss situation. Japanese to English is on their first album, Down Colorful Hill, which is one of my favorites. The Vanilla Sky song is on Songs for a Blue Guitar. If you like those two songs, you'ld probably be happy with anything you picked up.
If I had to recommend just one or two CDs, I'd pick Down Colorful Hill and Ocean Songs.

There was a definite change in their sound over the years, but I feel that just about all of their material is worthwhile. "Songs For a Blue Guitar" is probably a safe place to start. "Old Ramon" has a similar sound, but isn't quite as strong.
The frontman, Mark Kozelek, now has a new band called Sun Kil Moon. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for this post. I hadn't really been watching for any new Mark Kozelek releases, so I hadn't even heard of this before. I picked it up and now I see they'll be on tour next month, so I'll be sure to catch one of their shows. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't read about it here.
Unfortunately, I see that I missed Mark touring solo a few months ago. Oh well.

I don't like the version of "Have you forgotten" on the VS soundtrack. I prefer the other version, with acoustic guitar, and a soft electric guitar that comes in toward the end.

I'd also recommend his solo albums on Badman Records.
"What's Next to the Moon" contains entirely of (unrecognizable, of course) AC/DC cover versions. Worth checking out.

I think i'll start with the retrospective. on amazon.com everyone kept raving about a track called "medecine bottle" from the first EP.
EDIT: just got back from Tower in midtown. they only had the S/T release (which I bought) and the "Songs for a Blue Guitar" CD (which I did not get because they wanted $18.99 for it.)
