I really want to get a widescreen TV, and I'm trying to figure out whether to go with a larger RPTV, or a smaller direct view set. I want to go RP, but my living room lets in a lot of light. So how much is light a problem with the brightness of RPTVs during the daytime? And do blinds/ shades normally take care of it, or do you have to take hardcore blackout measures to compensate?

I bought a blackout curtain liner from JC Penney that I put between the curtains and windows and it solved all the light problems.

RPTVs are bright enough to watch in full lighting conditions. The only problem is when the external protective screen acts as a big mirror causing annoying glare. Many RPTV owners (especially those without small children or large pets) remove the protector.

I put up some blackout fabric to cover the windows in my theater and it works great. When you walk down to the basement on the sunniest of days it is completely dark. I had blinds up for awhile but they still let in a lot of light and can cause a lot of glare. The blackout fabric is just a sheet of white fabric that you can use to cover the windows. I have drapes covering that so it doesn't look tacky at all.
