Well, Peter Jackson has only won 2...so who cares. I don't think Lucas has won an oscar though.

Well, I sure as hell wouldn't give Lucas an Oscar. I'd give him an ice cream cone and a beating with the "stick of creativity".

And sure, it matters. I mean, why not?

Just so I'm sure...
was this thread created just so people could bash Lucas?

Jackieboy Jackieboy Jackieboy, does 99.9% of stuff posted on dvdtalk really matter ?

the answer is NO

but hey that's why we post it isn't it

Jackskeleton

Well when you start a thread that is sounding totally like a Lucas bash for the sake of only having a lucas bash.. it should matter.

Just because you can post something, doesn't mean you should. the wording is going to lead for a flame war. Instigating a flame war for the sake of having one seems pointless.

Mind you, I'm not telling you what you can't and can not post. Not being a dictator here or actin' da mod or nothing like that. But the Lucas bashing already happens plenty in star wars threads. Lets enjoy this night for LOTR's awards and not have to go through a Lucas Vs Jackson silly debate.

Actually no, i genuinely didn't know how many Oscars Lucas has won and i was intrigued about the answer

'Star Wars' (1977) won six Oscars.
'The Empire Strikes Back' (1980) won an Oscar for Best Sound.

this article says 10 though:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/2643217.stm

How many did the prequals get?

Then again if you really want to go all out.. How many awards has ILM won? ;) since that is a branch of lucas' creation.. 14. Lucasfilm's feature films have won 17 Oscars and received 56 Academy Award nominations, and its television projects have won 12 Emmy Awards.

So could that be some expansion to what you were looking for?

Jackskeleton

Sure, ROTK just won 11 oscars out of 11 nominations.

Ok, it's just that so many are out to just bash Lucas. So you can see why many of us find the question to be nothing more than fishing for flames.

But since you say otherwise, I do believe you. Lucas and Jackson do, in fact, have much in common, from making worldwide, much loved genre trilogies (that both garnered academy notice, Jackson receiving far more) to running and owning their respective technical companies behind those and (I assume with WETA in the future) other films. Fortunately Lucas forgot to rape my childhood, so I can still enjoy his work, even though some of it isn't necessarily great.

Blah, blah, blah, Lucas raped my childhood, blah, blah, blah, Jar-Jar must die, blah, blah, blah, Episode one sucks, blah, blah, blah, no OT no sale, blah, blah, blah.

There, does that cover all the bases of this thread? Good - now lets move on.

Luca$ is only in it for the money. He ebayed all his oscars (and special edition oscars) years ago.

Sure. And you decided to post the question the night that ROTK swept the Oscars? Pretty convenient wouldn't you say? This was flame bait from the get go.

He lives on the second floor, yes I think you've seen him before. If you hear something late at night, just don't ask him what it was.

Shouldn't Peter Jackson get worse of a beating then? Lucas at least made up his movies. Jackson didn't make up LOTR, he converted a series of books to film. Tolkien was the one that made up all the LOTR stories, Jackson was just copied them to another medium.

Yeah, and I'm Sammy Davis Jr. You're a liar and bad one to boot, not to mention an idiot as well.

the man made Howard the Duck

Another clueless statement. Lucas did not make Howard the Duck. He didn't create it. He didn't write the story or the screenplay. He didn't direct. He doesn't own it either. It's not his film at all.

Howard the Duck was directed by Willard Huyck. It was written by Steve Gerber, Willard Huyck, and Gloria Katz. These people are friends of Lucas from USC film school. They made the film. At the time, they were having trouble getting the film distributed. So Lucas allowed them to use his name as executive producer in or to get the film distributed. He wasn't even the executive producer. He just let them use his name so the studio would be happy.

So there's the facts. Howard the Duck is not a Lucas film. Now, maybe we can end this completely inaccurate assumption.

Star Wars won 6 oscars

Empire won 2 oscars

Jedi won 1 oscar

The difference is that Star Wars lost to a masterpiece like Annie Hall. FOTR lost to A Beautiful Mind (yawn) and TTT lost to Chicago (puke).

Oscars mean very little about the quality of a film.

Some kind of trouble? Some kind of fight?

Not to add fuel to the flames, but I think if you add up the many awards that Lucasfilm, Skywalker Sound, THx and Pixar have won over the years, then Lucas<font size=-2>TM</font> would be well ahead of Mr. Jackson.

Not to denigrate Pete's achievements, LOTR was fantastic!

why? Though spoken otherwise, it's pretty clear a lot of folks saw this thread as a flame from the get go. Some expressed there views in a subtle tone, while he expressed his views the way this thread started. If they weren't looking for a flame war why did he put on his flame suit? ;)

either way.. To judge a film on the amount of awards it recieved from a political system such as Hollywood is silly. Lost in Translation and mystic river both lost to LOTR. does that make them any less worthy of being good films or the film creators any less worthy of being called great film makers?

GL didn't make Howard the Duck, but he did make Radioland Murders (wrote it at least), and that was tripe!

Sad fact: people called me an idiot and pathetic all the time in one of my infamous threads in the Mature forum, and nobody got banned. In fact, my thread got closed!!!

SW won 7.
not sure if one of those was a 'special' non-categorized award or not, but i remember seeing the large white 7 in the newspaper ads for the movie afterwards in the summer of 78

Who cares what bad movies Lucas has been involved in... i don't recall a lot of people praising how great all of Jackson's movies were before LOTR.

Closing thread - gotten way out of hand and the question has been answered. Let's not start flame wars between Star Wars & LOTR.
