PS2 and optical out: do you get DD/DTS?
I've got optical out of my PS2 and optical is selected as being on in the settings but my receiver (Denon 1804) is not showing DTS or DD on the little light display on the front. Any ideas? Does the PS2 not allow this?

Yeah, the PS2 supports both DD5.1 and DTS. It will not show the DD or DTS light unless it is outputing that signal at the time. What game are you trying to play? If you are trying it with a DVD, make sure it is turned on on the DVD menu as well.

Of course, the PS2 won't support in-game DD 5.1 (unlike the Xbox). There are a few games that use DD 5.1 for cut-scenes and a few games support in-game DTS, though.

I'm trying to play a DVD. By DVD menu I assume you mean the audio options of the DVD itself. Yeah, this problem is bugging me.
Is it possible that a 2+ year old PS2 would need a firmware update or something to do this?

If you hit the select button, it should bring up a screen with a bunch of small logos on it. Find the one that is audio options and go in there. There should be an option to turn on digital out or something similar.

HOT DAMN! You were right! It's not the "audio options" button, however, which just cycles through the audio streams, but the "setup" button which did it all!
Thanks buddy!
