The Passion - Let's Talk Profit!

I was comparing the potential of The Passion with three recent blockbusters.

Pirates Of The Caribbean
US Total 305 Million
Worldwide 652 Million
Budget Costs 125 Million

US Profit 240%
Worldwide Profit 522%

Titanic
US Total 601 Million
Worldwide 1.8 Billion
Budget Costs 200 Million

US Profit 301%
Worldwide Profit 900%

ROTK
US Total 362 Million
Worldwide 1.1 Billion
Budget Costs 94 Million

US Profit 386%
Worldwide Profit 1,170%

And It's still going WOW!!

Now, with these numbers, the Passion with an initial budget of 25 million would have to gross the following to compare.

Pirates
US Total Comparison 60 Million
Worldwide 130 Million

Titanic
US Total Comparison 75 Million
Worldwide 225 Million

ROTK
US Total Comparison 97 Million
Worldwide 293 Million

Kind of places things in perspective. Either way, Mel's profit will be BIG!

Him and god will be laughing all the way to the bank. I thought the whole point about this flick was to make you see how much Jesus went through in order to save your damned soul... Not about how much cash it could make.

I truly believe that wasn't Gibson's reason for making the film. However, one can't ignore the cash he's going to be making.

He's already said that the profit will be going into other religious projects . . . we'll see.

Well, don't forget Mel's track record. I believe either Mad Max or the Road Warrior hold the the distinction of being THE most profitable films ever released, based on return versus investment. So maybe he's been on the God squad for a while now.

Imagine those kicking themselves for not investing in this flick. He asked several resources before he did it himself. No one would support him.

Well, to those with the most risk goes the most reward.

I'm sure Braveheart is up there. I'm trying to find box office records on it.

Well as an alltime grosser maybe, but Braveheart was a multimillion dollar production. One, or both of the Mad Max films cost under 1 million U.S. and grossed more than 300 million worldwide.

But when thinking of this, I did recall that the Blair Witch Project may have surpassed the profit margin ranking, costing well under 100 thousand and grossing upwards of 200 millon in the U.S. alone.

edit: Make that 140 million, with 25 million in marketing costs. I do recall reading the Guiness book of World Records that one of the Gibson films returned the highest percentage.

Here's a discussion about The Passion and how much money it's making. Speculation can go in there, too.
