I've owned this series for a little over a year and have been watching it little by little throughout the course of that time.
The production of this film is breathtaking and it's the best marine documentary I've ever watched.

However, tell me if it's me or my discs (original, no copies) or my player (panasonic RP82) but I find a lot of edge enhancement throughout the episodes. Some scenes are perfect most of the time (like the coral seas episode) and most of the underwater stuff is really crisp. I notice the problem mostly on aerial shots and water surface shots.

I've read a few reviews on the internet and nobody mentions this. I wonder if they are so taken in by the film that they overlook these defects or if it simply happens only on my setup.

Any opinions are welcome.

Thanks.

You know, I've never really noticed. As you said, I've been overtaken by the water scenes. I'll have to check it out tonight.

How about the folks on the night shift?
Has anyone noticed this flaw?
Thanks

I've never noticed any problem but maybe I'm not as picky as you or was too mesmorized by the stunning subject matter. Sorry I can't help more without rewatching which I don't have the time for at this time. Great series though as the Life of Birds are too in case you haven't seen them.

I agree. I am probably not as picky & am also mesmorized with the subject matter. And the Life of Birds is Fantastic! I bought an all region player, at first, so I could get all the David Attenborough dvd's. There are a lot of R2 dvd's of his available. Everyone is breathtaking.

I *am* picky, and I did notice the edge enhancement and mentioned it in my review: (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=3940)

"The only aspect of the image that I’d fault is that there’s a touch of edge enhancement apparent in some scenes."

It still has extraordinary image quality throughout (especially if you consider how hard it must have been to film what they filmed!) but at least you can reassure yourself that there's nothing wrong with your setup and you're not imagining the edge enhancement!

If you loved this set, definitely check out The Life of Mammals (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=6753). It's equally good. (ie. it's fantastic).

All of David Attenborough's documentary series are amazing. I wish his The Private Life of Plants series would be released on DVD.

Thanks for all the answers.
Holly:
Yours was the review I found that mentions this.
Now, to be quite honest, I'm not completely sure that what I see is alled edge enhancement.
To describe it, it is a sort of shimmering not unlike a desert mirage. It's a little bit of a blurring in some areas.
Thanks.

OK.
I just read an article, and what I see is not edge enhancement.

Well, I played it on the computer instead of my RPTV and I don't see the problem there.
I'm guessing it is a convergence issue that becomes more apparent in this particular DVD for some reason.
I've been planning to do fine convergence on the TV so when I get to do it, I'll see if it makes any difference.

I checked mine out on my front projector this weekend and noticed no apparent edge enhancement.
