We have a great scoop from fellow reader Zack this morning: Warner Home Video's next batch of two-disc special editions due in May will include Around the World in 80 Days, Blazing Saddles: 30th Anniversary Special Edition, Heat (sweet!), Purple Rain and the criminally underrated Wyatt Earp. Unfortunately, there are no official details on disc specs, street dates or exact nature of extras yet.

Same here man. I remember that line from the trailer before I even saw the movie back in '95. I think DeNiro said it to Jeremy Piven in the doctor's office.
Anyway, I sure hope that the 2-disc set will have the director's cut.

There is a long convulated story behind those releases (which all came early in DVD's life, and close together), but unfortunately we'll probably never hear it.
My best guess:
WB releases Twister. Steven Spielberg has a stake in Twister, and as you might remember, was a latecomer to DVD. He apparently didn't want it released yet. He strikes a deal with WB and DTS (whom he also has a stake in). WB will release a set of titles in DTS (including Twister). DTS gets a little boost, and WB gets to continue selling a fairly popular popcorn flick. Why the Lethal Weapon movies and IWTV get chosen is beyond me. They may have had already good sound mixes that would go well with DTS.
Since WB was forced to use DTS, it may explain why the DTS logo is nearly microscopic on the packaging of said titles, and why we have only seen one other DTS title from WB in the years since. They may have been angry at being forced into something by Spielberg, and to this day are ignoring the cries of many HT enthusiasts who want DTS. They could be making extra bucks, but they might lose face, even behind the scenes, and in the corporate world, that just isn't done.
Okay, Lone Gunmen mode, *off*.
I'm really only interested in Blazing Saddles, I seriously need more Mel Brooks on DVD in my home.

What studio does? I can think of New Line for LOTR and Disney for a few of the animated classics.
You folks should seriously stop thinking about this, it's not going to happen. You bought a product, you used it, you have a choice in whether or not to upgrade.

Well since I did get Blazing Saddles(along with Caddyshack) for 25 cents from Columbia House. It is not 'that' bad BS is being released. Though I am satisfied with the current dvd in terms of movie audio & visual quality. So unless the SE has those amusing deleted scenes that are added to tv versions. I don't think I would be in a hurry to upgrade.
Caddyshack is another one I won't upgrade unless the deleted scenes added for tv are included. The 20th Ann dvd while not loaded with extras,is great in visual & audio quality which is most important to myself.
I also got JFK for 25 cents in the deal as well. I still have not bought the newest 2disc release of it. Though am planning to sometime,as its one of my all time favorites & I want that documentary!
I do not own Heat yet, though have been tempted time & again to purchase it. So unless this SE is a Micheal Mann hackjob reedit. I will definitely be buying it;)

Around the World in 80 Days is the big news for me. I've got the director's cut LD of Wyatt Earp and I'll get this DVD only if it's the director's cut and has plenty of extras. Blazing Saddles, I'll probably get it. I don't like Purple Rain and I think Heat is one of the most overrated movies ever.

Interesting news re: Purple Rain, wonder what the special features[/b] will be? Can't recall the OAR on this, I was quite young in 1984 when I was introduced to this amazing, fluffy, extended music video. Loved Blazing Saddles, a must own for this family of comedy fans. Wyatt Earp, I've never seen it, so it'll be a definite rental for me. I think that I'll skip Heat, based on it not holding up well for me, not one of those with any substantial replay value, but good news nonetheless for fans of the movie.
Good news all around, special editions are always a nice incentive to revisit some of your favorite movies - unless the movie-only version was just released within the same year.

"Howard Johnson is right!" Blazing Saddles SE is good news.
As much as I'd be all over a 2-disc Young Frankenstein (his best movie IMO), the current SE is pretty darn good. Deleted scenes, bloopers, interviews and a Mel commentary. If it's not anamorphic, then I could understand a re-release. Also the "color" cover wasn't appropriate, IMO.

BR is in rights hell. There's some dude named Perenchio or something that works for that big Mexican TV network (Univision or something) that helped fund the movie back in the day, and now is playing hardball. No reason given, they just can't move forward without his release.

You know Tom, it's funny you mention this about the cover to YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN because this has been somewhat confusing to me:
Last November, on the Best Buy BF Sale they had a bunch of 5/$25 DVDs out there and people were loading up. I didn't see anything I wanted . . . but, lo and behold, there was YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN! http://www.intergate.com/~tobeornot2b/me/GRAPHICS-ANI/12937.gif But wait, this YF had a really groovy blackish/deep-purple-ish cover on it. I passed on it, and then discovered upon researching it, that no "blackish/deep-purple-ish" cover could be had in all of Frankentown — and instead, there was this puke yellow number. Does this relate to the YF covers controversy you and Tarnower are discussing?
And just what animal was that one I saw at BB do you reckon? I almost wish I had bought it just to swap out the cover, since I'll likely not last beyond December before needing a YF fix, and will have to buy that hideous yellow one tsk . . .

FYI, there's an excellent thread over at HTF about the Warner 2-disc sets (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=169855).

I think the warner 2 disc slip cover special editions are the best series(overall) of dvd's ever produced(yes better than criterions). I do not put other warner 2 disc special editions(such as the Potter movies, matrix reloaded, any given sunday ect...) in the same catergory as the slip cover special editions, the regular warner 2 disc special editions are some fine dvd's,but nothing beats the slip cover 2 disc special editions

"Ah, but the servent waits, while the master baits." . . . "A whole field of wacky weedus! You people don't know the value!" . . . "Hey, where are you from? . . . Ethiopoa . . . What part? . . . 125th street."
Pure gold!!! Whoa! :whofart: Geoff . . . way to drop the hammer! http://www.mindspring.com/~boycekb/images/Smilies/Banned.gif
