I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this question has been brought up already.
I've heard a few rumblings about X-Files season 9 being released in November. Based on Fox's pattern of releasing one season every six months or so, I'm wondering why they're waiting a full year before releasing the last season.
Has anyone heard anything different?

As reliable as "The Rumor Mill" on thedigitalbits.com is, I'd have to guess that it'll be out by May as well. About a year ago, in a HTF chat, Fox rep Peter Staddon said that seasons 8 and 9 were completely finished and ready to go. That was shortly after the release of Season 7 on DVD. Given that the DVD version of the season is complete, I see no reason why they wouldn't release it in may, since all the other even-numbered seasons have been released in May. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Homeless people don't watch The X-Files, so what's the problem? As a collector and long-time X-Files fan, I can't have a collection with one season missing. And it wasn't "horrible" by any means. Turn to most other network shows and see what's what.

I only watched maybe 5-6 episodes plus the series finale, a lot of those "filler" episodes weren't very good but I did like the super-soldier arc and that episode with Agent Spender appearing to be Mulder.
I hope this means they'll be releasing it in May, instead of waiting until November.

Super duper !
I'll add my support for X-Files on DVD. I didn't get to see many of the episodes during the regular run of the show, because I often wasn't home on the nights it aired, but I took a real interest when I caught it in re-runs - enough so to buy the season box sets when they became available. Now it is undoubtedly one of my all time favorite shows, and I'm looking forward (although somewhat wistfully like MasterofDVD) to getting the final season, even if it was probably the weakest season. As Kerborus said, even weak X-Files is a helluva lot better than most anything else on TV.
Oh yeah, and I bought ALL of my sets (all sealed and new, Region1, no bootlegs) on Ebay for anywhere from 50-60 % of retail price. So there are some good deals to be had for careful and patient bargain hunters.

I am a huge X-Files fan, and I love the show to death. It's in my top 3 TV shows of all time, and will almost certainly remain there until the day I die. I also own seasons 1-7 and the movie on DVD. I bought them using my well-developed and very cunning eBay skills for $50 - $80 on eBay over the past two years. And they were brand new, region 1, factory-sealed copies, too. I accept NO substitutes!
That being said, I don't own season 8 and I won't own season 9 on DVD. Season 8 had only a few tolerable episodes for me, and any appearance by Alex Krycek is a great one, but that entire season rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like where the show went, nor did I like Mulder's disappearence or Robert Patrick taking over for David Duchovny. I prefer to think of season 7 as the last season, with "Requiem" as the final capper. Season 9 was pretty bad, with only a few bright spots scattered here and there. Some episodes I actually quit watching halfway through.
Still, I say "right on" to those fans who still aren't discouraged. I know what it's like to "complete the collection" as they say, and although I'd rather not bite the bullet on seasons of a TV show that I didn't enjoy, I respect your attitudes as well.
The packaging of these sets remains super-cool, and it's possible that I might pick up the last two seasons one day when I have oodles of cash and I want to "complete the collection".
By the way, I'm actually partially color-blind, believe it or not. What color is that neat-looking season 9 DVD box, might I ask?

I watched every episode because I was a long-time X-Files fan and felt compelled to see it through to the end. I kept hoping that Chris Carter would lay off the cocaine for a week or two and pull things together for the big finale. Instead, we got the worst 2-hour block of television that has ever been aired. I was disgusted. I felt like I'd wasted too much of my life on the show, only to see it fall to crap and amount to nothing in the end.
Season 9 wasn't the best season but the worst of the X-Files beats almost anything on any given day.
Hardly. Season 9 of X-Files was on in the same time-slot as Alias on ABC, a vastly superior show. I wound up watching that one instead and taping X-Files for later. I'm glad I did.

Don't forget that there is an X-files movie or two to 'wrap it up' as you say, Josh Z. I didn't think the ending was the best it could have been and there definately were a few clunkers in season 9, but IMHO it was still a good show.
I do not like Alias whatsoever, as it seems to be the Ken and Barbie version of James Bond, starring a stick figure girl who knocks down football players with one kick and the bad guy is... Her mother! Egads, even X-Files did the whole paternity thing, isn't it dead yet? Just goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

During the ninth season of The X-Files, I ended up taping the eps and watching the first season of 24 (which is my favorite season of TV ever) instead. But I wasn't as disappointed with the series finale as some people were. I thought "The Truth" was pretty decent!

After the last couple of seasons' dismal ratings and Fox's increasing displeasure with Chris Carter, I'm not so sure those plans will ever see fruition. I doubt Duchovny or Anderson would want to bother with it at this point either.

I would say that's probably not an accurate presumption. The show is still very popular in syndication, still has a HUGE cult following, Anderson and Duchovny will most certainly at some point be interested in revisiting their respective roles for a movie (or two, or however many there many be) as their post X-Files careers haven't exactly been going gangbusters. And no matter how much Fox may not like Carter, they certainly aren't going to pass on the money that a popular franchise could bring.
X-Files has all the potential for being another ST:TNG type film sequel franchise. Not necessarily a prestige franchise like LOTR, but a steady moneymaker, at least for a few films.

Just thought I'd give some advice about people who are not willing to pay full retail on these. With Amazon coupons and trivia almost gone, and no money to start with in the first place (thanks college loan), I had bought the last two runs of the seasons off Hal.com. I never thought about doing it until seeing the prices and a friend who buys all her stuff on ebay or half. And if doing your homework and dealing wisely with the sellers, you get a good deal. Just picked up for example, Season 8, for $43 shipped Priority Mail. Got it in 2 days. Done and done. Just watch out for imports, boots and too cheap of a price.

Actually, Chris Carter is writing the second movie as we speak and all players, Anderson, Duchovny, Davis, Patrick and Gish have all either signed to do the movie or said they can't wait to do the movie...
My only reservation is that there is talk of the movie being a 'prequel' or a 'stand alone'. I think Chris Carter will stall time to get to May 15, 2012 and then release the 'Alien Invasion' the smoking man said was coming.
Josh Z, I definitely think your attitude on this one has gone south and taken all logic and reason with it. The show is and was great as a whole. I always feel sad for 'fans' that can do nothing but focus on the negative...

Kerborus, where did you read about the second X-Files film being in the making? I certainly would love it, especially if all the regular cast members would be in it, including Patrick and Gish. This show ended way too soon, in my opinion. Look at the Simpsons, they now into what, 15th season?

Could the sequel be coming sooner than expected? Gillian Anderson was on UK chat show "Parkinson" this weekend and 'BD' sent in details of what happened when that old charmer had his way with this redhead: "She said that they're doing another X-Files movie hopefully by the end of this year. She said she and David [Duchovny] have signed, and that Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish are also back. She had no idea or storyline, but said it might be a prequel set before the events of the TV series last season. Anderson herself specifically said - "Chris doesn't tell anyone what he's writing about, so we have no idea what to expect. But I assure you it will be something quite good. It's taken all this time, it better be. David, Robert, Annabeth, Brian Thompson who played a hunter and Mitch Pileggi, are all in it so it will be a nice reunion for us all".".
The awesome website Countingdown.com follows a ton of upcoming movies. See here: http://www.countingdown.com/movies/30913
Also, Robert Patrick was interviewed on local radio here in Atlanta about 2 months ago for his upcoming role as a gangster in some flick I can't think of the name of and was saying that all of the cast, even William B. Davis were told that X-files 2 could begin filming by mid to late 2004.

I don't know how many of you check the bargains forum but DVDPlanet has season 9 for $55. Well worth it. They have the MSRP set $10 too low so it will probably get fixed soon. Better jump on it.
What sucks is that we have to wait and see how Millenium does before they decide on The Lone Gunmen. ? Where is the reasoning in that? Wouldn't it be safer to go by sales of the X-Files sets? :hscratch:

$99.99 is retail, so 30% off of that would be $69.99.
at $55, that is 45% off MSRP.
and it doesn't matter now, because it was a mistake and they already changed it. Now it is $69.99 (30% off) for the doubters. But to each their own, I hope mine goes through.
