i noticed after viewing the first part last night (boy that change is bad) that the only thing that was in stereo was the opening Regency logo, everything else was mono. now not that i am complaining about a mono track, but if a track is 5.1, I'd expect at least the score in 5.1

surprising for a 1984 movie....it was probably originally recorded in Dolby Surround (stereo?)

hmmm?

From DVDFile's review (as DVD Savant doesn't review tech specs much):

"Once Upon a Time in America gets the full Dolby Digital 5.1 treatment here, and while it again suffers from the limitations of the time, it is still very nicely done. Frequency response sometimes feel pretty tight and confined, and Leone leaned more heavily towards looping than most other 80's film directors, which sometimes is exacerbated by the strong sense of stereo separation. Surrounds are given a nice worked with the remixed atmospherics, even if low end pales by today's standards and the rears are not truly that immersive. Still, for a film of this scope and age, this is a very nice soundtrack. "

Maybe it's something up with your system?

I think i must have been tired. since i re watched it today, and heard plently of stereo for a movie like this
and i kind of listened to this review from ign
A big raspberry here. The movie is supposed to be in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, but the entire film came from the center channel speaker. Again, this may be a shortcoming due to the age of the print, but whatever the reason, it's a real shame, because Ennio Morricone's score was absolutely fantastic. It would have been nice to hear it from my two front speakers, which is what they are made for, rather than the center channel. Likewise, I'd love to hear the front and rear speakers used to create the bustle of New York, but it all came from the center.
