Carrie Fisher gave an interview yesterday and stated that she is doing a commentary for the SW dvds. Can you imagine a cast commentary on this one? JEJ and Mark Hamill. I wonder if they could actually get Harrison Ford to do this.

Don't hold your breath on Harrison Ford being involved with anything related to Star Wars. Since he hit it big, it seems that he's tried to distance himself from his former Han Solo role. He's even gone on record as to say that he wouldn't play Han Solo again because that character isn't 'deep' enough or something along those lines. (This was about 10+ years ago when there was talk about making episodes 7-9).
That being said, his latest movies (K-19, Hollywood Homicide, Random Hearts, etc.) haven't done very well. Since he's agreed to do Indy 4, maybe he'll realize what helped make him a star in the first place and actually do something with it.

I wouldn't count on JEJ either. I think he said he spent a total of 2 days in the production booth for his part. I don't think he even made it to any of the sets. Anyway, wouldn't David Prowse make more sense?
How about a Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels commentary? The view of SW from the droids.

I do find it funny when actors bastardize the roles that made them big. Without those roles, they would have been nothing. Mark Hamill has done the same with his Luke Skywalker role.

I think those actors want to distance themselves because they don't want to be typecast into similar type of characters in other movies.
Anyways it's good to hear Carrie Fisher will have commentary on the DVD. Can't wait to hear what she has to say.

Makes sense... well if it were 1984. But we are over the 20 year mark since they were in a Star Wars film. If they haven't distanced themselves by now, it ain't happenin'. They should all suck it up and realize most of them wouldn't have careers without these movies. What is an afternoon spent with good company you haven't hung out with in 20 years? These people need to get over themselves, and do it for the kids (i.e. fans).

I don't think Mark Hamill has distanced himself from Luke Skywalker. He parodies it all the time, such as that episode of "The Simpsons."

I imagine Anthony Daniels is a lock for a commentary track. I see the commentary being:
Mark Hamill - all three movies
Carrie Fisher - probably all three movies, although i hear she doesn't remember much from the Jedi period.
Harrison Ford - maybe the first one, but that's it
Anthony Daniels - all three
Dave Prowse - none. I thnk there's bad blood because he didn't get to play Vader in any of the prequels.
Kenny Baker - interviewed for the bonus material, possibly a seperate featurette on how he operated R2D2
Peter Mayhew - no idea.

We, the fans, also helped make Harrison Ford a star. If we don't buy tickets, no one cares about anybody's character in a particular movie.

Does Carrie even remember making the SW movies? She was stoned beyond belief that entire timeframe.

Peter Mayhew should be a lock. He seems friendly enough, and grateful George picked him to be in the movie. Of course he has to be asked.

With the level of fandom that Star Wars, Star Trek, and LOTR have, i'd be annoyed at revisiting my old roles too. Sorry, something about them hardcore fans give me the heebie jeebies :)

I knew this from the get go. I think Fisher and Hamill are a lock, with maybe Anthony Daniels joining in. I wish this was more of a real group commentary though, wherein they're all in the same room, or at least Hamill and Fisher instead of something that's edited together like the style in the prequels. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy both commentaries. I just think there's a better dynamic having most, if not all participants together.

This is from Harrison Ford's interview with Barbara Walters...it went something like this:
BW: Would you play Han Solo again?
HF: No. That character's pretty thin.
BW: Would you play Indiana Jones again?
HF: In a New York Minute.
Harrison begged George Lucas to kill off Han in ROTJ, just to give his character something interesting to do in that movie, and George said no. Harrison's not trying to distance himself from the role, he's just not interested in playing that character again because of how poorly he was developed in ROTJ.

Does anyone really want to see a 65yr old Han Solo? An older Indiana makes more sense, especially as a professor.
I'm fairly interested in a Carrie Fisher comentary. I also have to wonder how much she remembers from that period. She was interviewed on Fresh Air last week and she said she was zonked out the whole time.

The whole point of freezing Han was as a backup plan in case Ford didn't return. Just like how the Wampa attack on Luke was solely to explain Hamil's car accident scars.
Neither scene had anything to do with the SW story, but were added because of real life events.

I hope Anthony Daniels doesn't do a commentary. Ever read his column in "Star Wars Insider"? It's completely incomprehensible.

The column was supposed to be that way.
He does have good stories to share though, as he did on QVC a few times. I think his commentary would be good. Not many cast members have participated in all 6.

That's the point. He's messing with the language, a very un British thing to do. I think he's hillarious. I hope he does the commentary.

Wait, wasn't he signed on to do all 3 films, or at least any sequels after the first? I can't see him being able to bail out without repurcussions. Maybe he's just that much of a badass.
I really could care less if Ford is on it. I love him, but only b/c of his great characters and acting in the SW and Indy movies. If he wants to reject that part of his life, fine; hopefully he's grateful somehow though, since that's what made him wealthy, famous, etc.
My point is - I don't care if he's in it. Have you ever heard him interviewd on Letterman or Leno? He's completely worthless. Barely talks, mumbles a lot, plays with his lips. He may be nervous, but I can see him being either: a) nervous or b) annoyed at having to do a commentary, so he'd be a waste of space anyway.
I agree - Hamill and Fisher would be great; anything beyond that is good for me; hopefully Ford will surprise me.

I have to agree about Han Solo's character not developing any longer in Jedi -- maybe even regressing. Empire was definitely when he was at his best.
Can you imagine if they did kill off Solo? Maybe Luke and Leia would have wound up together and that's why Lucas had that kissing scene between the two of them.
Toad
02-18-04, 02:39 PM
I agree his character was kinda useless in Jedi - I never really thought about it I guess. Maybe that's a reason why it's my least favorite of all of them (except the first 1/2 hour or so, it's pretty sweet if you're a SW fan and Ford does some great acting coming out of the carbon freeze, acting blind and cold, etc.). I wish he would've died too. :)

I saw him on Conan (I think it was Conan, but it definitly wasn't Leno or Letterman) and he was completely different person then he is on Leno and Letterman. Harrison Ford has never really come off as a very charismatic personality on Late Night TV. I was watching an interview he did on Letterman from 1982 to promote Blade Runner and he was just the same.

I don't really think we're missing much without a Harrison Ford commentary. Listening to his interviews over the years -- although I like him a lot -- has shown him to be rather too lowkey and rather boring. I don't want Peter Mayhew in a commentary (though I wouldn't presume to try and stop it -- LOL), because I'm met him at a number of conventions and, nice though he is, he's not a very good speaker. I don't know if it's a speech impediment or what, but there's something there for sure.

Harrison Ford was on one of my local radio stations less than a year ago (I think it was 96Rock in Atlanta, and they swear they didn't make it up) doin gan interview, and he was easily the biggest jerk I've ever heard in an interview. Whichever movie it was for, he got really easily angry, and then when they asked him about Calista Flockheart's eating situation he got really pissed and started calling them a bunch of people who weren't fit to shine his shoes (random insults) and revealed that he'd already downed a case of booze that afternoon. I thought it was hilarious, but he was a real ass. I doubt he'd do commentary unless he got paid, heh.

I wouldn't expect any of them to do it unless they got paid. The commentary tracks will be advertised as a special feature in order to generate sales. It's only fair that the participants are compensated for it.
For current movies, it may be part of their contract, like promotional tours, etc., but for a movie that's 25 years old, I would expect them to be paid for their speaking.
