Passion of Christ in "Select Theaters"
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,111307,00.html
Saw this a minute ago on Fox News. Personally I dont have a problem with it. I don't think Gibson and Newmarket are keeping the movie away from Jews so much as targeting where he thinks the money will roll in the most from. This isn't discrimination, its demographics. Here in Cleveland, you can't find really spicey hot sauce. Why? Because Clevelanders are sissies when it comes to spicey foods. However in the south, they got stores specifically for Hot Sauce. Thats not discriminating against Hot Sauce lovers in Cleveland, its smart business. Sell where people are gonna buy.
But apparently the media thinks we live in Soviet Russia, we're a bunch of commie pinkos who are all exactly the same, and when you try to locate something to a key demographic, you are not trying to make money, you are trying to discriminate. Trying to keep Jews from seeing it so they dont get mad at Gibson for making the movie like it was written in the Gospels.

from the article
Gibson obviously thinks there's a potential problem in Chicago, where "Passion" will be on only two screens. Otherwise, Chicagoans will have to go to the suburbs.

I call bullshit on that article . . .

Select Theaters? Yeah right 2000 Select Theaters. This is getting one of the largest releases of an independent film ever. It will be playing in every big city in America, which is where the Jewish population is mostly located.

The Avalon theatre here in DC will have post screening discussions on the 25th.
excerpted from www.theavalon.org
COMING SOON
Opening Wednesday, February 25
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST -- Mel Gibson's new film about the last 12 hours of Jesus' life.
Showtimes Feb 25 - March 4: 1:00 4:00 7:00 9:45*
Tickets now on sale at the box office.
Due to the controversial nature of this film, the Avalon is committed to showing it in a constructive, educational context. We are working with Jewish and Christian leaders to develop panels and discussion groups to follow select screenings. We will also display and distribute viewing guides and other material developed by religious organizations to help set the context for the film.
On opening night, Feb. 25, the 7:00 show will be followed by a discussion led by a panel of Jewish and Christian clergy. Details on this and other dialogues will be posted as they are finalized.
*on Feb. 25, the 9:45 show will be in the Avalon 2 theater.

Our theater is selling advance tickets for it. They've never sold advance tickets for anything, not Star Wars, not Lord of the Rings, not Sorority Boys... nothing. This is in North Dakota, which has the third lowest Jewish population in the U.S. (450 in the whole state).

Most theaters in Las Vegas who are screening the movie have been selling advance tickets for it for a while.
Is this film really going to be THAT big? The only films I have seen get advance tickets sold over a month before they come out belong to The Matrix Reloaded (hell, I bought my ticket in the middle of April) and all the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings films.
