Seriously though, has anybody gotten a firm release date on this yet. Some places have the 24th and some have the 25th. Any ideas?

I played the Ninja Gaiden demo last nite. Upon first impressions, (I know I'm gonna get knocked around for this one) I think I prefer Shinobi/Kunoichi over this game. Sure the graphics are better, but the fighting system seems quite clunky on this beta test version. Camera angels are awkward and it's hard to change the camera sometimes. I'll reserve my final judgement on the retail release though. :)

I finally played the Demo last night and all i can say is its gaming bliss! That 10 min. demo or so puts all other ninja games to shame and mostly every action game as well. I kicked so much a$$ it wasnt even funny, ive played it no less than 5 times already and plan on playing it till this darn thing gets released.

Wow! That's all I can say. Really, really cool. Definitely worth the wait. Just hoping it's as long and as varied as those preview videos make it out to be.

Btw -- what's the best combo you've gotten? Using the flail (sweet weapon), I've gotten 107.

Tough boss too. Might be able to beat him next time. I've always got to learn to block.

khai
02-15-04, 02:09 AM
Have you guys seen the video of an anonymous player playing the Japanese demo? He's got skillz. It's only available via bittorrent so you'd need that to download it.. and it's 107MB. But there's a bunch of seeders so you'll get it in no time. It was going at 250KB/sec for me.

I thought that I read somewhere that this would be a 60 hour game.
That seems kind of long for an action game but I hope its true !

Centurion
02-15-04, 09:39 PM
I've played it two hours straight...and that's just with the sword.
There's a huge list of combos with the sword alone.

I haven't tried the flail or the two-handed sword yet but I'm assuming they have their own set of combos to master.

The game looks really good but I enjoy the ambient sounds even more than the graphics. The background music is the feudal-Japan type with the typical instruments/sounds you would hear in the movies of this kind.

I love the dramatic presentation of the Ninja tower (forgot what it's called) when you get to the top. Again, the music is what really helps to set the mood for the battles awaiting you in the dojo.

The interactive environment is not just for show in this game. You can break lots of things with your weapons but more importantly, there are a number of moves you can do when jumping off a wall. Some of the moves are necessary to progress through the game.

True, the camera does need some work. However, pressing the Right trigger resets the camera angle behind your ninja.

Great animation (some of the combos just look cool), SOUND, graphics, and some Hollywood-esque cutscenes in this demo certainly have got me looking forward to the full version of the game.

impressions after playing the demo for a week...
The camera sucks, but you can live with it. I found it a pain to have to adjust the camera when i'm being hacked at by 4 or 5 ninjas. My best combo was 174 with the Flail. It is hard to maintain combos since one hit by the enemy resets you to zero. The regular ninja sword is too slow and the BFS (which weighs 100 lbs. is too slow, but is an awesome weapon when fighting small groups. The bow is great for shooting birds. The graphics are really well done. At the first of the demo i let Ryu go for a walk in the creek and then got under the waterfall for a quick shower. I just stood there and looked at the water and thought, "I've seen this before"... Trees and leaves reminded me somewhat of doa 3 graphics. I can beat the level offered in the demo in under 10 minutes on normal, but on hard I have not as yet defeated the guy at the end of the level. Blocks do not work and he will kick your ass right now.

Haven't beaten him yet, but the block seems to work for a couple of hits but then you need to do something really quick before he grabs you and throws you.

To beat the boss on the HARD difficulty setting, use the walls.

Here's how:

First of all, equip either the Dragon Sword or the 100# two-handed sword. Next, stand near any wall and allow the boss to approach you. Don't let him get too close. Do a wall jump and press X or Y to do a jump attack. Whether you hit or miss, you should immediately hold down the Left trigger (or is it Right? whichever one makes you block) and press the Left thumbstick in any direction away from the boss to do a dash. Remember, you do not want to block as he will grab you.
You can also try running on the walls towards the boss then press X or Y to do a slashing type of strike.

When you strike with the 100# sword it does some major damage.

What? Sarcasm or are you being serious?

Two totally different games. Genma Onimusha is a $10 game now that came out in 2002. Ninja Gaiden is a brand new game that is totally not related to Genma Onimusha.

Finally an official date, March 2:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AT LAST TECMO ANNOUNCES SHIP DATE FOR NINJA GAIDEN
The highly anticipated title, shipping in early March, is expected to set a new standard in the action genre.

TORRANCE, Calif., February 24, 2004—Tecmo® officially announced today that the ship date for its eagerly anticipated new action title, Ninja Gaiden®, for the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft will be Tuesday, March 2, 2004. Gaining an incredible amount of buzz since it was first shown on the E3 floor in 2002, the powerhouse title will ship out to retailers across the country in mass quantities, arriving on store shelves throughout the first week of March.

"Tecmo’s focus while developing Ninja Gaiden was to create the best action game ever and with the game only a week away from launch I am proud to say that we have succeeded in this goal," John Inada, Tecmo’s General Marketing Manager, said. "Ninja Gaiden will set a new standard in the action genre and we guarantee it was well worth the wait."

Boasting 100% action, Ninja Gaiden will allow the player to unleash their inner ninja with smooth game play, speedy battle sequences, and a variety of advanced acrobatic ninja moves from running and flipping off walls to hanging and swinging on rails. The player will also have a variety of primary and secondary weapons at their disposal that when used in a combination, create advanced weapon attacks such as damaging wall-based assaults and all-powerful ultimate attacks. Xbox™ Live Compatibility, a host of challenging levels and visually exquisite environments are just a few more reasons why Ninja Gaiden plans to raise the bar in the action gaming genre.

About Ninja Gaiden
One of Tecmo’s most treasured franchises will be given new life this March when a whole new action-packed Ninja Gaiden hits store shelves…with a vengeance. The player takes on the role of the powerful and mysterious ninja, Ryu Hayabusa, who seeks revenge after his clan is massacred by the Vigoor Empire.

Realistically violent battle sequences and acrobatic ninja moves restore Ninja Gaiden to its rightful place in the action/adventure hall of fame. Tecmo’s revered development team, Team Ninja, has created a unique new Xbox™ Live Compatible feature within Ninja Gaiden. The Master Ninja Tournament, a new feature developed specifically for the game, will allow players to participate in a nationwide competition. Here, they will test their honed ninja skills and find out who is the top Ninja Gaiden player in the country. Participants in the tournament will compete in downloadable trial missions only made available through Xbox Live. Top ranked players will win special prizes and also be included in the Ninja Gaiden Hall of Fame. Tecmo will continue to reveal more details regarding the rules and prizes in weeks to come.

Ninja Gaiden is scheduled to launch onto store shelves early March with a suggested retail price of $49.99 and an ESRB rating of Mature. Gamers can pre-order Ninja Gaiden at Tecmo’s website (http://www.tecmoinc.com). For additional information on the game, visit the official Ninja Gaiden website (www.ninjagaidengame.com)

I hated the camera. I hate how it goes to first person if you want to look around but you can't move & look around at the same time. It is a beautiful game but the demo did not do much for me. Looks like I will be able to save my money for the tons of other games that are coming in the next few months.

Also...did anyone notice in the Options Menu that you could choose if you have a 4X3 TV or a 16X9? I thought that was pretty cool.

My friend got the demo last night, they could have called this game Ninja May Cry. The camera sucks, but the game does have a lot of action in it, and the demo was fun. If they can fix the camera before the game is released it will be a big help.

I agree with the bad camera. I'm so used to using the right stick to move with the character, and the zoom feature of the camera doesn't really give a good view at times.

The game did remind me of Genma Onimusha with the layout of the level.

To be blunt, the camera system in Ninja Gaiden sucks (http://www.gaming-age.com/cgi-bin/reviews/review.pl?sys=xbox&game=ninjagaiden)

and this one:

one of the most frustrating cameras in any third-person game (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=333941)

If you are unable to pull the trigger to center the camera, I would probably pass on this one. Every thing that I have seen on this game said that the camera does a fairly good job of following you but if it was a problem, you could always resort to the trigger to center it again. I can see how this would be a pain for you because in the demo, I found the camera to be annoying too.

My cousin picked it up earlier today, and I just stopped by his house long enough to watch him beat the 5th chapter. Graphics look amazing, very crisp. As far as the camera, it appeared as though whenever he clicked a trigger (at least that's what it sounded like) the camera would swing around behind Ryu. Of all the Xbox exclusive games I've seen/played, this looks to be the best. If I had the money, I'd buy an Xbox to play this game.

Is the camera in Gaiden fixed? The camera in Sunshine was totally moveable, so it really only sucked for those that don't like having to control the camera 95% on their own.

I'd take it over the camera in something like Devil May Cry which sucks and you can't move it.

The camera on Sunshine wasn't always completely controllable by the user. Sometimes it would not move and sometimes moving it would put a wall in between the camera and Mario. The most obvious example of the camera problems in Sunshine are in the part where you climb the back of the ferris wheel.

I am going to be the first one to say this, but, I am not liking this game too much so far.
The combat is so reminiscent of Prince of Persia it is making me sick. The guys are incredibly cheap, and unless I am mistaken, there is no easy way to quickly change targets if you are already attacking someone, which causes you to get hit by other guys repeatedly. It also seems very repetitious.

The camera is atrocious, I don't even want to see how bad it was in the demo. I hate not having ANY control in with the 3rd person camera, other than centering it on your character. I really wish they let you use the right analog to control the camera in 3rd person instead of first, it sucks having to stop and look around.

I also don't think the graphics are anything special (ofcourse, the screenshots looked much better), even running at 480p.

I have only played it for about 30 minutes, so my opinion might change over time, but so far I am not impressed.

I went to the place I would usually go to get games on release date (Toys r us, Gamestop) and not dice ... but found it at Best Buy ... weird.

Anyway, I agree that this is a frustrating game, but it seems like I'll like it once I get the hang of it.

What is making this game so frustrating for you guys? I have some camera issues to complain about but the difficulty isnt that easy or hard. So far its my favorite game on xbox, reminds me a lot of Devil May Cry which is one of my favorite games for ps2.

I'm somewhat liking the game. The game seems was too difficult for the average gamer, and I have a feeling used copies will be arriving in a week once gamers get tired of trying to beat the damn boss 300 times with no luck.

Yeah, I do realize that. I don't care whether it is a rip off or not, just that it is too similiar to PoP's combat system, which I really disliked. The main reason I disliked it is that it is too hard to stop mid combo to attack in another direction quickly enough. That and the fact that the enemies are cheap as hell and will all hit you at the same time in different directions.

I would say it is a cross between Devil May Cry, Prince of Persia, and Otogi.

I really cannot stand the camera, they should've did like PoP did where the right analog stick moves the camera, unless you press a button to go to First person.

As for the camera, I dunno I guess I got used to it. It wasn't even an issue for me in the demo.

I've been playing the game for a few days. Like I predicted, Tecmo has released yet another hyped up graphical triumph that delivers some awesome gameplay experiences, and that reviewers will gladly praise in their early reviews (see DOAX Volleyball, DOA 3). Those that have to sit down with the game longer will find that it is not as deep, involved or as fun as it lends itself to beleive. I predict, like DOAX, that the early reviews will be favorable (after all, limited play time is allotted to get these reviews up before the competition), and months from now when more people get deeper into the game, and spend more time with it, we will realize how shallow the game really is.

I've spent about 30 minutes watching my friend play this game, and I have come to one conclusion: This is Devil May Cry without guns.

It is really scary how much this game looks like DMC, and I'm also told that some elements are similar to PoP.

I beat the first boss today, whoopdedoo! I could care less, this game just doesn't excite me at all. I continued playing the second stage until I got to these ass holes with horses. There are two of them at first, one with a bow, another with a polearm. I killed one finally after about 5 minutes, and then guess what happens, another one 'appears'! How fantastic of them! And the fact that the camera does a horrible job staying with you, half of the time I can't even see them!

I have learned over the years to trust reviews less and less, and that IGN's reviews are trash. I still cannot believe this game is getting 'rave' reviews. If this game wasn't stupidly difficult and the enemies weren't cheesy as hell, then maybe I would have more interest, but I doubt much more.

One thing I have learned so far that helped me get through the second half of the first level in a breeze was 'patience'. I would have to block alot of the attacks for multiple guys and then retaliate every so often, just to get a couple hits in and not get pummelled. This might sound fine and dandy to some, but I was expecting some fast, intense gameplay, not slow and tedious.

edit: And on another note...why can we say 'ass' and it isnt censored, yet 'ass(nospace)hole' is.

Yup, this is Devil May Cry.

The menu system is the same. The item system is the same. The style (as I have seen so far) is the same. Every time I look at the game, I see another aspect which looks almost exactly like DMC.

I find it more humorous than disappointing. I mean, if you are going to rip off a game style almost in total, you might as well do it from a good game.

Congradulations Xbox fans... you now get to play a version of the game us PS2 owners played years ago.

That said, I will probably end up playing this game, if not just because of the similarities to my beloved DMC.

WAIT!!!

I had the same problem you did, but I didnt give up. Just hit the guy riding the horse with your bow, but dont shoot it in first person. You have to do a lot, and I mean A LOT of dodging and dont be afraid to use the firewheel art. On occassion you do have to kill the fireball throwing guys. It is best to dodge just as they fire off the ball, and then roll in to strike. Its tough I know but I got through it after 10 tries.

Yeah, i got really stressed on the second boss. After that you learn a couple new techniques and get the hang of the speed of battle so the game gets easier, or atleast more user friendly.

It's best to hit and run with basically every enemy, even that horse guy. Just roll out of his way and attack his horses ass. The monk ninjas in the fight are annoying, but can provide you with extra health if you don't have any elixirs or you can charge your special attack with their essence. I died on him about 12 times before i beat him, and when I finally got a pattern down I beat him without taking much damage or using my elixir. I'm on chapter 7 right now, and I gotta say that the second boss is the hardest boss I have faced so far.

I found the guys on horses before the 2nd boss a lot harder than the actual boss. I was on the 5th level when I decided it was time to start a new game. After you get the hang of it, its A LOT easier, I am up to the 3rd boss and still havent used any items. I did spend abou an hour and a half getting orbs in the first level. This way I have the level 2 sword, 2 armlets (sucks you can only wear one at a time, seems dumb to me conseriding Ryu has 2 arms), and 2 ninpos.

It's too bad some of you are judging the game from the first two or three chapters. Yes the game is challenging and difficult, but once you learn how to use all the moves available to you the game will really open up.
You absolutely must learn how to use the 'Reverse Wind' move or whatever it's called. This is the dodging manuever executed by pressing the L trigger and L thumbstick. Another amazing attack that will help is the essence strike. Try charging your Dragon Sword with an essence or two and watch the combo meter climb.

Press the White button to display your Karma points and each time you attack you'll see how many you have killed and how many hits in your combos you pulled off.

Yes the camera sucks at times but the R trigger solves that problem most of the time.

I also agree with others that some of the earlier bosses are tough. I believe it's because you are fighting them at a time when you do not yet know how to utilize all the attacks available to you nor do you have all the available button combos available to you.

Damn, even the counter attack combo (again this is something that you must learn how to do) is so sweet to pull-off. The game rewards you for being able to fight strategically.

This is no button-masher game.

Maybe thats because most of us are having a problem getting PAST the first few levels? This game really does need an easier difficulty, it is just no fun in this game getting your ass whooped.

I do normally enjoy hard games, like F-Zero or whatever else, as long as they stay fun at the same time.

The pace of this game is also another reason why I am not having that much fun. IMO it should be a button masher, a ninja should be moving very fast the whole time executing moves in a flash. Instead I feel like an ederly ninja who has to take his time with every move and having to constantly stay on the defensive, instead of the offensive.

You know, when I first started playing this, I felt the same way. Once I really learned to use the combos, and use the block effectively, I really started to move very fast. I am now blocking and attacking very offensively. I am just starting the 4th chapter now, and I think the third chapter is where I really started to learn how to play. The counter-attack combo really opens a lot up. You guys should give it a try. The camera isn't even that big of a deal after a couple chapters. You have to get used to pulling the trigger every so often.

As for the folks avoiding the game due to the "difficulty", I say at least give it a try or rent it. I was also having my frustrations during the first 2 chapters and was ready to put NG up on ebay, but after awhile it just got addictive. Just have to know when to block and retaliate. Soon enough you're breezing through each chapter wanting more. The camera also isn't much of an issue once you get used to it.

That was a different period. I was a kid, had tons of free times, and didn't mind a stiff challenge from my games.

Now I have very little free time, and a ton of challenges in the real world, thus the little time I have for games I like to play something where I can just explore and goof around (like a platformer or zelda-type game) with minimal frustration as a way to relax and unwide after a long day.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, the one on the ship where you're outside in the rain, then you have to walk around to the opposite side of where the two gunners were and you should see a window held together with masking tape that you can jump through...then you're in the power room.

I bought this on release day but havent got to play it yet, ive been kinda busy. But im hearing all this talk about it being too difficult, is it really that hard, or do most gamers here dislike challenges and like breezing through things? I for one welcome a challenge as long as it doesn't become too much of burden. I remember playing Chaos Legion not so long ago on Normal, that was one freakin' hard game! Also that fight with Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts was hell! Hell I Tell You!
Anyway, to those who are playing it now and progressing, is it really that difficult, or just something that needs participation from the gamer to learn and amply some skills so the ass kicking can commence?

Definitely the latter. I think when people pop the game in they're expecting a straight up hack and slash. That's not the case because this time, your enemies will block and give you a whoopin.

Some of the levels or enemies can be difficult, but it's not impossible. Just play it smart. Learn your techniques, explore all areas, stock up on health, upgrade your Dragon sword, and don't overwrite the majority of your saves. It's doable and there are handful of people who have already beaten the game and are moving on to Hard or Very Hard.

Gromit
03-06-04, 08:58 AM
My name is Gromit and I am a gaming wuss.

I realize that a challenging game is a great thing for a lot of people. But I get distracted by bright and shiny objects (new games) and have trouble finishing the games that *aren't* incredibly challenging.

For me, it's just a matter of patience, of which I have none. I'll get bored and move on to something else before I'll invest the time required to beat a challenging game like Ninja Gaiden.

I understand why a lot of people prefer a challenging game. It makes perfect sense: get more for your money by playing a game that takes a lot of skill and practice to master. Sometimes though I find that I have more fun playing a game that I can actually finish, even though I know I'm not getting as much out of it as I would if I bumped the difficulty level up. I think a game that I play to the end at an easy level is better than a harder game that collects dust on the shelf.

So I see where you guys are coming from who love games that are more challenging, like Ninja Gaiden. But when I read reviews that mention how difficult the game is I pretty much write it off. Sad but true. :)

You will get the skull key later on in the game, don't worry, you won't miss anything. As for the weapon, check the small dark alley to the left of the bar. Look for the blue and put your ninja skills to the test. A slash after 3 might help.

Bought the game and ran into the same problem, only went into it with that one potion you get from the dead ninja, took me about 15 tries but yeah it is possible to beat him, once I figured out the pattern it was pretty easy, just a matter of not getting hit by the swordsmen and blocking a lot.

I borrowed my cousins Xbox and rented NG tonight. This game is Rygar all over again regarding the camera, meaning it's horrible. Game hasn't really been to difficult, feels about the same as DMC1. The first boss fight is boring since you just take pot shots and then run away from him, at least that's how I was doing it.

I made it to the second "boss" in the village, wasn't fun because again the camera is horrible and ruins that fight. Besides the bosses the game feels good, again, the same exact thing with Rygar, game was fine, boss battles were horrible because of the camera.

The game so far has been fun though, has a nice feel to it, although it feels a little to much like a fighting game to me. Graphics haven't wowed me yet, I don't get excited seeing wooden floors have a mirror reflection to them. ;)

Although I'm only in chapter 2 I'm feeling DMC1>all still, a lot of that has to do with DMC's style, which quite frankly Team Ninja has never had in their games.

edit: It's also suprising how much NG mirrors Onimusha and DMC in design. I won't come out and say TN are no talent hacks, but it's suprising how much they "borrowed* from those two particular games.

I've found the difficulty of this game to be exaggerated. The 2nd boss only took a few tries (maybe I got lucky). I ran in and used the fire wheel magic while slashing away. I'd then stand back in a corner and launch arrows. If a swordsmen dropped magic essence, I'd go in for another fire attack. Repeat until dead.

flashburn
03-07-04, 08:11 AM
I didn't even try using any strategy against the second boss. I just bought that fireball ninpo and blasted him 3 times with it, peice of cake.

I must say, I am liking this game more now that I am on level 3. I really, really like the level design of it. Now that I learned 'counter attacks' it is a little bit easier with combat. I still wish combat was more offensive oriented than defensive, but I can live with it.

"edit: It's also suprising how much NG mirrors Onimusha and DMC in design. I won't come out and say TN are no talent hacks, but it's suprising how much they "borrowed* from those two particular games."

I thought that it would be easy to understand after saying I won't come out and say TN are no talent hacks, meaning some people could say that, but that I wasn't one of them. Sorry if my wording was confusing.

I was just eluding to the fact that NG resembles Devil May Cry and Onimusha a little to closely imo, particularly after the game has been in development for as long as it has.

I will say TN has little talent artistically though, imo. Their character designs have always been average at best.

Yes, Ninja Gaiden does share a lot of the same characteristics as Devil May Cry and Onimusha because its the same genre of game.

A Ferrari also shares a lot of the same characteristics as a Pinto (it's still a car with four wheels, seats, an engine, etc...) but one's designed and made so much better than the other. It's the same thing here in my opinion. It's the same type of game but its designed better with awesome graphics and gameplay (I know a lot of people hate the camera, but it becomes second nature to reset it after awhile and its no big deal. I actually hated the camera in Devil May Cry a lot more).

OK call me stupid but I'm in chapter 6 and I still haven't figured out how to use my special powers (Right now I have some fire spell) I looked in the manual but couldn't find anything. I think they are called Ninpo or something.

Make sure you have a ninpo equipped, you should have 2 by now. Then press Y and B at the same time to use it.

do u buy ninpo or do u have to find ninpo?the 2nd boss whoop my butt alot of time, and throwing those guys that keep firing magic fightballl at you make it even harder.

what are some strategy of beating the 2nd boss? using arrows is not cutting it.

amped

Ninpo can be bought, but is pretty expensive and you should spend your points on health elixirs instead. You don't need to use your ninpo until you reach the boss though.

As for the 2nd boss, there are several ways to approach this:

- kill all the disappearing sorcerers first. They'll stop respawning, then you can work on the horseman.

- ignore the sorcerers go after the horeman.

- supposedly, one of the corners allow you to attack the horseman with arrows while at the same time not receive any damage from him. Though you would still have to deal with the sorcerers.

As for how to attack the horseman, just use the air slash as he approaches you by pressing jump, then Y. Then when he passes you attack his rear or use a defensive roll to avoid his charge and then attack, he's susceptible to more damage from the rear. Toss in a ninpo attack every once in awhile and keep in eye on your health, you should be alright.

Here's what I did to beat the second boss.

-KEEP MOVING!! If you stand still the fireball dudes will get ya.

-I focused mainly on the Horseman, charging up with the Y button everytime he was coming at me (and yes, R trigger is your FRIEND to fix the camera thingie).

-If you need health, kill the other guys or kill a couple and charge up with Y to inflict more damage to the Horseman.

-Never mind the arrows, you'll just waste your time.

And last but not least: get a couple of beers in ya!! (if you can). I found I was more relaxed, cared less about dying and was reacting more on instinct...

menaz

The Ninpo I bought was only 1000 orbs, and it does a good amount of damage.

My strategy for the horseman:

Make sure you have the ninpo that circles you in fire equipped. Concentrate on killing off the sorcerers. They give you blue orbs fairly often, and red ones as well. Try to stay near corners, whenever you see the horseman coming at you, use your ninpo, the circling fireballs do a heck of a lot damage and at the same time you can keep slashing him, and the horseman doesnt leave or attack back pretty much until the ninpo wears off. When all the sorcerers are gone, it is a lot easier to finish off the horseman. You can use your arrows, you dont even have to aim, just push B whenever he stops, and they should hit him. Try to hit him from the back, which makes the horse stop running, and get ready to roll to your left, it seems that when he turns around, he does so mostly to his right.

For those of you running short on orbs:

On the first level, on the room where you first encounter the white ninjas, everytime you leave the room and go back in the ninjas come back. If you do that over and over as you like, you can get a whole load of orbs. I spent about an hour doing that and I got 60,000 orbs.

I dont know how to add the spoiler tags, but im warning you now, there might be a small spoiler below.

The best place for orbs I have found so far is right before you fight the huge dinosaur skeleton thing on Chapter 6. There should be a save point right before him and right after that a room full of bats. Those bats are the best place to get tons and tons of orbs. You should climb up a step and come across two bats, slice them, climb up to the top where theres lots of em. Charge your essence, make sure both orbs from the previous bats are absorbed and let the button go. You will slice and dice most of the bats and will be left with huge orbs. Then go back to the save point and the bats will be back when you reenter that room. Repeat the process until you max out your orbs. This is extremely fast, I built up 86,000 orbs in about 25 minutes.

Well i started playing last night and all i gotta say is...Damn I Love This Game!!! I have to admit, some people here got me kinda scared about the games diffculty, but now that ive invested a few hours into it, its not that bad. Its a bit tough, but nothing too bad, well i guess so far.
As for the first boss, i was prepared for him since i played the demo a few times. It was a bit tuff since the lack of weapons i had in the demo, but nothing a few dodges and jump attacks couldnt take care of. The second boss i gotta admit gave me some trouble. I tried a few times but finally got the hang of him and brung him down. The 3rd boss was a walk in the park, complete pushover. Right now im at 3hrs+ and im at the beginning of chapter 5.
The game started off a bit tough but once i got use to it and honed my ninja skills, i was whuppin' ass left and right. I take care of 3-4 ninjas at once without breaking a sweat. I found that hidden weapon in Tairon and it reallys helps. Oh and i love that Tairon stage, especially the Bar Scene! :D

What is all the whining about? So, this game is not a walk in the park. If it were, then what would be the call to play it? We are loving it and having a blast kicking ass. So what if it takes some skills to play. Absolutely stunning graphics and great game play.
Then there are the comparisons with dmc and onimushu? These two games WISH they were on the level with Ninja Gaiden.

Finished on Normal difficulty about 10 minutes ago. Play time clocked at 21h54m. Overall it was a fun game, glad I played it to see what I would/wouldn't have missed if I didn't. Only collected 45 scarabs, was hoping to play NG(nes) before rental is over.

Pros:
Game can be hair-pulling difficult
Beautiful graphics *overall
Combat feel nice
Beautiful CG, probably some of the best game CG I've seen
Nice selection of moves to use
No problematic slowdown(although there is some, just not in combat)
Not a short game!

Cons:
Horrible camera
Enviroments are beautiful but lifeless
Characters look like plastic dolls
Lame story
Horrible english voice acting(was expected after playing Rygar)
Lame bosses(not just a NG problem)
No targeting reticle for Bow, slight annoyance
Team Ninja fascination with oversized breasts, leather
Did I mention the horrible camera?
Forgettable music
No Nes NG remixes(as far as I could tell, could be wrong)

Score 8.5

sambo777:
The comparisons are fair because TN copied quite a few things out of oni/dmc and transplants them into NG. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but they did copy some things.

Also DMC1>>>>NG>>>>>>Oni1>>Oni2.

If you get good at countering, I found,at least for me, the war hammer the best. It has a wide swing so you can get more than one when countering on occasion, also it seems you go back to blocking faster at the end of the counter. There is less of a chance of being hit by another enemy at the end of a counter before going back to blocking with it, it seems.

It's a 7 level sword, so 6 more upgrades should do it.

One way to rack up essence points is to find an area with respawning enemies, preferably enemies that are easy to kill such as bats or zombies. With a little time and effort, it should be fully upgraded before you know it.

You have to use a max essence attack to take out a lot, otherwise you get the petty essence.

Jumping attacks work well.

You can also jump off the wall and then do a downward slash.

But probably the best way is to block his combo then immediately counter with your own combo. As soon as your done, either jump or roll away. Never get too close and never use your shurikens or else you'll be in for a world of hurt.

Strategy I used for the first boss was simply block, block and the second he let up I would hit him, sometimes our swords would cross and he would lose balance, then I did as much as I could before he recovered. I pretty much stayed in his face the entire time, no running around for me.

silentbob007, all you need to do to deal with those asses is to jump and do an over head strike and repeat... I just got out of the only room that has really irritated me... it is in chapter 9 or 10, cant remember, but you run around in this room firing armor piercing arrows into these minitature laser helicopters and you ride platforms suspended from cranes to access a card to open a door... this seemed really dumb to me after all the fun i've had with this game... destroying the tank was easy with ap arrows but the helicopter is really tough

Abranut
03-11-04, 01:05 PM
To beat the helicopter, just stock up on A- Arrows and exploding arrows after you destroy the tanks. It's pretty easy to dodge the helicopters' missles, and it's machine guns don't take off that much health. Just make sure that you save immediately after destroying the tanks so you don't have to face them again. Aim your arrows for the yellow light in the nose of the chopper.

This little helicopters are easier if you use the windmill shuriken. I had a harder time on the tank than the helicopter, then it dawned on me to use ninpo. The fireball one (i forget the name) knocks the soldier off the top of the tank if you hit it right, then it'll be dead in water while you can unload arrows in it.

Would you happen to have a save point before that? Specifically before you get the skull key, but after you face the tentacle fiend again. If so, try killing those 3 zombies that are on the ground floor over and over to build up points. You can do this by wall jumping back to the save point, the side opposite of the throne, go to the hallway inbetween Muramasa'a statue and go back to the zombies, it'll reset that area which means more zombies to kill and more points. Plus, from there you can buy health or upgrade your weapons. Just takes time though, but it should be enough if you're in dire straits when you face Alma.

Otherwise, Alma's pattern is pretty easy. Just start jumping away when she is throwing pillars, her purple spell, and when she charges. Be quick to adjust your camera when nescessary. Try using your jumping slash and combo when she is on the ground or knocked down. Also, it would be easier if you have a Level 3 sword.

03-12-04, 12:36 AM
Stay away from the walls while fighting Alma so the camera doesn't get in your way. Do not attack her while she is flying around. Concentrate on rolling away from the pillars and fireballs that she throws. Do not get close or you might get pulled in with that levitation attack. If she does the thrust kick from the air or attacks from the ground, roll out of the way, then immediately follow up with a strong move to knock her to the ground (I used the jumping slash with Y). Combo away while she is on the ground. I preferred to use the ice storm magic that juggles her in the air (I had 4 magic bars at this point). I only used a couple of the small health potions during the fight.

There is a much easier way to unlock all the Ninja Gaiden classic games without having to get Master Ninja on all the levels. Keep in mind that the last two games on dependent on getting part 1 first. (ie.. You need to get 50 scarabs no matter what)

amped mentioned how to get Part 2, but here is part 3 as well. :)

The credit goes to "rashonmon" in Neotaku forums.

------------------

Unlock Ninja Gaiden 1

Muramasa gives you this after you hand over all 50 scarabs.
Get all 50 golden scarabs and visit Muramasa's shop. You don't need to do them all in one play session. Continue your game from a successive save, and you start off with all the scarabs you picked up the last time. Now you can pick up the scarabs you missed. The spots of the scarabs you got in the previous game are now empty. When you hand over all 50, Muramasa will give you the Ninja Gaiden game disc that you can use in the arcade machine on the first floor of Han's Bar.

Unlock Ninja Gaiden 2, the Easy Way

Been slaving away, trying to get Master Ninja on every chapter? Get Ninja Gaiden 2 the easy way! After you get Ninja Gaiden 1, go to the Clock Tower Plaza of Tairon. Get up on the ledge above the multicolored door that takes you to Pleasure Street. This is the same ledge where you flip the switch to unlock that door. Pull out your bow and aim at the clock tower across the street. Shoot the face of the clock and a treasure chest will appear on the building across the street. Jump down, and go into the doorway across the street with the stairs. Ascend to the top, and find the chest there containing the Ninja Gaiden 2 game disc.

Unlock Ninja Gaiden 3, the Easy Way

To get Ninja Gaiden 3 the easy way, you must get Ninja Gaiden 2 first. Once you have that, go to the Peristyle Passage, which is the ceremonial room in the Aquaducts, just before your boss fight with the giant fossil bird. It's adjacent to the Hall of Balance. Remember the golden scarab you got on top of the broken pillar? Triangle jump back up there and you'll find the Ninja Gaiden 3 game disc.

Play Classic Ninja Gaiden Games From the Main Menu

You must go to Han's Bar to play the Ninja Gaiden games at first, but there is a way to get the classic games accessible from the main menu. Just beat Xbox Ninja Gaiden while having a classic Ninja Gaiden disc in Ryu's inventory. A new option will be added to the main menu that will allow you to play the old-school Ninja Gaiden games without visiting Han's Bar.

Man, as much as I REALLY want to like this game I am having the worst time with it. I've had it for 4 days and STILL cannot beat that first boss with the nunchucks and I blame that DAMN camera.
The problem is as someone else said, at the end of the day of working at a job you want to come home and relax and play a FUN game. Well, this is NOT that type of game. Its a controller smashing one! I don't consider myself a skill-less fool with games (Although now that I am 30 I don't seem to have the patience or skills I did when I was 10 back in the Commodore 64 days) but this just bites. Am I the only one finding this game to be difficult beyond belief? The way you are surrounded and the enemies take pot shots at you while Ryu "completes" his attack animation....but the worst is the camera...I'm sorry but I think this RUINS the game and it amazes me that no one has yet to create a camera for these types of games that works flawlessly. The ultimate problem for me stems from the fact that I can never see what the hell is going on at all times on the screen. I can hear an enemy enter a room but by the time I adjust the friggin camera to a proper angle, my ninja butt has been handed to me. UGH!! Just for kicks I went back and played the original NES Ninja Gaiden which wasn't exactly a cakewalk at the time and managed to make it to Act 3 and dying once. That made me feel a LITTLE better. :P

Thank you for allowing me to vent...:)

I felt the exact same way you feel, at first. After I got to around the 3rd stage, I started to love it.

Also, you made mention of being hit halfway during your characters attack animation, you can actually block at ANY time, even if your character is in the middle of an attack.

As for the first boss, he whooped my ass like two times, then I just took my time with him. Just keep blocking (you dont need to move around that much, or at all even). After he hits you a couple times (while blocking), open up a combo, and you should be able to hit him a couple times. Keep doing that, and eventually he will be defeated.

Sounds to me like even if you could see that wouldn't help you, get down the basics of blocking first, personally the camera didn't give me any trouble until I think chapter 8 or 9 when it seemed to be all over the place during a boss fight . but quickly went back to normal.

i'm in the aqueduct. the game is quite simple, except for the boss battles, and that has a lot to due with YOU having to rotate the camera.

if some of the people in here are having trouble after gaining so much essence in the aqueduct, have fun with the original ninja gaidens.

you don't need to block to get thgrough the first ten levels of this game. you just need to know how to jump. actually i find the block quite useless so far. just beat the aqueduct.

Right where you recieve that note is the dark alley she is talking about. You must wall-run on the first wall, then jump across to the second wall, then jump again to the next one, and finally jump across to where you will see a new kind of shuriken (forgot the name, it acts like a boomerang). There is also a spot to heal and restore all Ki (its reusable too!). It might take you a few tries to make it up there.

Experiment with the numbers you were given from that clue. Turn left first until you reach 2.

vigorian flails fully upgraded, and ikazuna upgraded. wall run past them in the chapter you first encounter them, flying swallow even further past. if you don't make it past an area with them, then just start a combo with the flails. lightning ninpo if you really have to. they'll give up plenty of ki essence, especially if you have a certain armlet on.
in the second place you encounter them, you can do a flail combo, then when you can't do any more hits with the combo immediately use the lightning ninpo. you'll get at least one ki essence back and receive no damage.

Hey I am all for skill and strategy, I'm a huge Shmup'er after all...but when the mechanics of a game (I.E. this camera) decide its difficulty factor, I think theres something wrong.

Anyway, I'm not much for cakewalks but I have the same probs with targeting in that new Bond game as well...its a similar dilemma.

BTW, I've been playing video games since the day my parents brought home that Pong system from Radio Shack and regardless of how I may feel about Ninja Gaiden, its much easier than Ghosts N Goblins. ;)

when you enter a room, hit L trigger and R trigger. about faces you in a block. never had a problem. sure that part could have been changed, but the camera angles are kind of a nature of the beast. Some if it is just subjective, what user's preference would be, so I don't know if any system would be flawless. I definitely think that when you're moving in one direction, and the angle changes, you should be still going in the same direction if the analog stick is still held a la Devil May Cry. For instance, if you're holding it back to run towards yourself, then the camera swings behind ryu. This is important amid fights, and as soon as you let go of the stick it'd correct itself. Still, though, I've beaten the game on normal and hard, and the camera really wasn't a factor in the difficulty of fights. When you play a second time you can breeze through the chapters, and it's clear that once you're past the learning curve for handling the weapons (blocking, counters, all the combos), everything's a LOT simpler. The only time it ever affected me was in any obstacle-course type areas that require precision jumping and walk walking, or you die. The problem was more that ryu only turns his body in like 30 degree angles unless you're caressing the analog stick. the solution was to use first person to face ryu perfectly then switch back to 3rd person.

Upgrade the Lightening Ninpo to 3rd level, they weren't annoying anymore. I just let them gather around me and then I'd unleash hell on them. Usually (70%) of the time when they died, at least one of them left essence to replenish the meter. I never bothered to attack them with weapons, just that ninpo. Unless it was just one left anyway.

ok this game is driving me crazy i got the NG 1 and 2 discs and went all the way the hell back to grab number 3 and i can't pick it up. The disc is there, i can walk straight through it, but I can't pick it up. I haven't actually loaded NG2 into the arcade machine and if that's the reason I just might have to break my disc, I don't wanna go all the way back just to put it in, then all the way back to chapter 10 or watever, then all the way back to chapter 13, where i currently am to continue on in the game.

That fat peice of shit at the end of chapter 3 is starting to piss me off. I can get his health down to the point where i only need to hit him 2 more times to kill him and then he stomps my ass. It's getting really annoying having to do all that crap that leads to him over and over again as well..

It's still a kick-ass game though.

congratulations. you've reached the point where button mashing will not defeat the bosses. just keep your distance, then hit him with your jump Y move and keep moving. if he's charging up to shart shooting, jump + Y. it'll stop him from charging as well. If he has begun shooting, just run, jump or roll in a circle around him.

I was playing this on Sunday, and I got up to the point with the skeleton boss. Since I had saved right before that and I was about to finish for the night, I figured, what the hell, I am just gonna mess around with the boss. I found him INCREDIBLY easy, I was in shock. I thought for sure after beating him, he would come right back.

What I basically did was use the whirlwind shuriken (the boomerang), and just constantly throw it at him from a decent range back. Then just jump over his tail whenever he swings it. I did mess around a little and use my sword, but I found in the end, it wasn't worth it. Hope that helps...

Not that I know of. Do the regular shurikens do any decent amuont of damage?

Try doing the jump+y attack, that should work pretty good against him. Just time it right, and take your time.

I think your only option is "is there a way to beat the dino w/o going back to Tairon?"

The answer is "yes". I had a little trouble with this guy, but once you figure out his pattern, he's not too difficult. He's got only a couple of attacks (from what I recall) He's got:

projectile bone missles (not very damaging, but can mess up your combos)
a dino-bite, which is very damaging
a leg swipe (and tail), which is damaging, but easy to dodge.

You need to chop out his legs, while recognizing his attacks before they get you (especially for his bite). Forget about the Vigoorian Flails, use your dragon sword and chop his legs to bits. Roll and block to avoid damage from his missles. If he's coming in for a bite, do your best to get the hell out of there. Jump the swipes accordingly. The key is to keep moving. Get off a quick combo on one of his legs and step back, watching his movements.

Good Luck!

Running Jump + Y from left to right and then back right to left constantly makes this guy one of the easiest bosses. When he is going for the chomp, if you roll forward, youll roll underneath his head. If youre constantly doing the run jump + y youll dodge 90% of the projectiles automatically. The leg swipe I believe you can block. Just be careful with the tail, hes gonna swing it at least twice as soon as he turns around.

I get to the rooftop with the 3 ninjas and their incendiary shurikens and I get my butt kicked ever time. I keep running back to the save point to ensure I don't blow this one. Try to recognize the sound that accompanies that attack, it's her only one that will really do damage to you. If you can get close, try hitting her with your ice ninpo if you need a little boost. She'll mostly dodge your fireballs if you try those, but they work sometimes.

Well - I've played this a bit and I don't like it. :/ It's hard. That's not why I don't like it, cuz I like games that are challenging... it's just that it's challenging, but there's nothing that makes me wanna step up to the challenge. Also - being forced to sit through the cutscenes is annoying and makes me wanna quit rather than try again and have to sit through the cutscene again. And what's worse, is in the middle of a fight I open a stupid door and then have to go back into the room to clear it again. Annoying. When I kill a bunch of ninjas, I want them to stay dead even if I leave the room.

Start - A - Start

It doesn't work if you do it just as the scene is starting. Wait a couple seconds into it and keep hitting that combination of buttons and it will skip the scene.

Finally beat this last night (after taking a week off from playing) and I must say I truly feel like I've accomplished something when it comes to a video game. Now I've got to go back through to unlock the original trilogy...

On the walls by the bar, right where you read the note, you should see blue lines on the walls. There are 3 walls in a row that you will run on. Start on the one closest to the street and keep hoppint to the ones farther in untill you jump on to the ledge with the weapon. On the last jump, make sure you jump at the very end of the wall at the corner or you will miss the ledge.
