BIG FISH...what did everyone think

I liked this movie a good deal. It definately had little shades of other Burton movies. Overall enjoyable, will probably pick it up if its released on DVD.

Yeah definitely a great movie. Got screwed over by not getting nominated for more oscars.

I liked it, but I was sorta on the fence about it at moments when it was reaching for a little to much.

like every other burton flick, I'll buy the dvd.

I loved it. Really funny and emotional, and don't worry Caliking, I cried more than once. This is the father/son movie of 2003, just as Road to Perdition (in my mind, anyway) was the father/son movie of 2002.

An enjoyable evening on the strength of excellent performances by Finney, Lange, and the ever reliable Ewan McGregor. Burton's world was quirky and interesting, but, thankfully, not overwhelmingly so. Overall, the tone and tenor or the movie did recall The Princess Bride.

I won't buy it, but I thought it was worth the price of admission.

It's a definite buy for me. I liked it. Much better than I thought it was going to be.

I think the movie is completely dependant on whether you know someone IRL that is a teller of tales or not.

Well, my father was just like that and he died of cancer and the film did nothing for me... perhaps you can't know anyone like this for it to have some sort of 'magic' for you.

Pretty forgettable.

I might've had something to do with watching this right after ROTK. At the end of the day I was still going through hobbit withdrawl.

Big Fish got pretty boring by the end too. I was like "come on already!". Serious potential wasted on what is essentialy a fantasized Forrest Gump.

I don't understand all this "crying" I keep hearing about. Hell, it's gotta be ROTK that drained all the emotion out of me.

heh.. for the record, I didn't really care for ROTK (liked TTT alot) and thought that dragged on far too long and was just more of the same. Not to drag this off topic or anything though.

Anyway - I had a good feeling about Big Fish and was excited to see it - I thought this could be Burton's comeback (personally, I thought he took a nosedive starting with that batman movie), but unfortunately I just felt it never reached its potential and never really tapped into any genuine emotion. It could've been much more... both in terms of being emotionally charged and in terms of outrageous fantasy/tall tale.

I loved Big Fish but I was hoping for more of the fantasy world type of stuff. Scenes like when he stumbled upon the town of Spectre.

I thought it was very good, but not great. I'm a pretty big Burton fan, and was slightly let down by it. But a large part of that was probably due to all the hype on this forum saying it was great, that probably had my expectations a little too high.

My sentiments also.....not mentioning it made a refreshing change where i could take my girlfriend and kids (usually the film choice or film rating doesn't allow this) and have them all enjoy it as well.

Just 'cause you didn't like your father is not the fault of the movie. <--big wink

I thought Big Fish was great, as well. Then again, I like Alison Lohman so anything she's in is good...

I really liked the ending, that was probably what made the movie for me. I thought it was really powerful. The film was pretty slow and probably more tailored to the "thinker-movie" crowd, but I think there was enough comedy and adventure to keep any reasonable person entertained.

Overall, one of my favorites of 2003 (don't forget Matchstick Men!).

Excellent movie. Thought it was very different from most of the junk out there. Part comedy, part drama.

Excellent movie. A definite must-see!

...did that just sound like a critic tag for the DVD cover or what?

I was a little wet too, and my dad's still alive (though recently diagnosed with MS). We didn't always get along growing up, but as I get closer to 30, I miss living near him more and more everyday.

And I definitely got a Princess Bride vibe off of it also.

I pretty much agree with everything Trigger said. It had potential but just was pretty mediocre. Speilberg could have done it much better.
