The Lottery tv movie

Can anyone give me an extensive review of this 1996 TV movie. Or is this the one where everyone chases selected people around the town and beat them with bats?

I remember watching that travesty with some friends in my college dorm; we all mocked it mercilessly.
Come on, it had Dan Cortese in it as the main star, nuff said.

It's actually based off of an outstanding short story, of the same name, by Shirley Jackson. An excellent read and, if I remember correctly, not too bad of an adaptation by the film.

I would say it was a horrible adaptation of the story, turning a simple grotesque tale into a bizarre murder mystery. It seemed to be based on Jackson's story the way Lawnmower man was based on Stephen King's story: in name only.

"Local libraries were jammed with people checking out Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery' only to discover that the book does not contain winning lottery tips but is a rather a macabre tale of conformity" - paraphrase of Ken Brockman.

"Oh my God! I can't believe what's going on in this town! But before I escape, I'll just enjoy this refreshing Dr. Pepper."

Oh well . . . it's been a while since I've seen it. Maybe I'm remembering it badly. Although I do remember loving to the story when I read it . . . possibly a little transference going on.

There was a short (10-20 minute) adaptation of the story that I remember seeing on my PBS station several times in the 70's. It was pretty straightforward. Can't remember any details.

Don't tell me someone actually got offended because we talked trash about Dan Cortese!
