While it is obvious that ROTK has the best ending for the story, I think we should also look at the endings on an individual basis.
I just finished watching my EE of FOTR, and honestly feel that it is the best ending when looking at the movies as stand alone films. Of course I am sure that the my mindset at the time I saw it and of the people I saw it with plays some part in that conclusion.
I remember when Frodo was standing on the banks of the river and wondering what to do and then we hear the v.o. of his conversation with Gandalf where he professes his disdain for the situation. Gandalf responds with the now famous line of: "So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you." I am sure you all know what happens next, but with the tragedy of 9/11 little more than three months behind us, it seemed that both the audience and myself could feel the reasonance Gandalf's words.
Furthermore, the movie really does end on a note more reflective of life itself. The characters do not really triumph, and there is no resolution, just a glimmer of hope that things might work out. I really do prefer movies that have an open end, because it leaves it up to the viewer to decide what happens. Granted, I had read the books and knew everything would be alright. But still...
