I watched the pilot and said, "This show STINKS!" gimmie PTI.
So about 2 months ago I start watching again and it starts growing on me but I keep thinking how much I dislike Max Kellerman. Then today I watch and Stat Boy (Tony) is hosting and although I do like him a lot, Kellerman is a much better host for ATH after seeing him host the show. The only thing I just can't STAND is when Kellerman says "Next Topic!" and does the Arseno Hall woo woo woo arm flying thing. WTF is that?
So anyone else give up on ATH and then come back?

I've always liked ATH; I think it's a funny show. I also like Stat Boy but I have to say he is just not been doing a good job this week. Halfway through Tuesday's episode I stopped watching and won't come back until Kellerman does.

I like ATH better then PTI. With Stat Boy in this week you can see what a good job Kellerman does of keeping things under control, and keeping things interesting. I don't think Stat Boy is doing a bad job, it just shows you how tough it is to do a good job hosting a show like this, with 4 very opinionated people trying to shout over each other.
As for why I think it's better then PTI, Wilbon and Tony go off on tangents too much and don't have much meaningful discussion about any of the topics. At least with ATH, you get some good discussion on the issues and usually a few different viewpoints on the situation.

I also like Kellerman, and he has a pretty good handle on a lot of sports. Some of the other guys on the show are morons though. I can laugh at them some, but it gets old quick. Still not bad, but I think they would do better w/ some better sportswriter/journalists

Stat Boy (Tony Reali) gives points more often and mutes less often than Max. Those scores are piling up by the time they get to "Out of Bounds" (where its all in bounds). I'm guessing Max is coming back next week since Callishaw(sp?) said "Are you here all week?"
BTW, I loved the show since it came out, but I like PTI just a little more.

I like to hear them pick on Woody Paige. Rarely can he make it 10 seconds into a show without getting muted.

I agree with your points for the most part. My problem is, when Stat Boy subbed on ATH previously, I think he did just fine. For some reason, I just think this week has been particuarly lacking.

I love the times that they gang up on him. It's great. It's just like the new segment on NBA Fast Break where they bring in all 7 NBA correspondents and they gang up on Marc Stein or Ric Bucher. Great stuff.

I've never been able to get into it much. It would be more interesting if they rotated more writers in. I get sick of the same people as none of them are particularly interesting like Wilbon and Kornheiser IMO.

Thanks for the info. I hope he works out a new contract with ESPN; the show doesn't seem as lively without him.

By the way, I was noticing that Kellerman was "muting" Jay Mariotti of the Chicago Sun-Times almost as much as Woody Paige just before Kellerman went on leave from ESPN.
Kellerman was the perfect host for that show, because his amped up speaking style was perfect for that show. Tony Riali is just a bit too laid back in style and speaks with an annoying whiney voice.
But I definitely love Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon going at it on Pardon the Interruption. :) People don't realize that that's how they talk at the Washington Post Sports desk, too. -rolleyes-

I prefer PTI as well. I nearly fell off my couch laughing last Monday's episode after the Super Bowl when Tony mentioned the Cialis commercial. Who knew the term "4 hour erection" could be so funny. Well, let me take that back...

I wish they would take the scores down so Max couldn't see who had what. I'm sure he'll bump a few points here and there to make who he wants to win each day.
I do hope they resolve his contract soon.

I disliked the show early on, but I began to really enjoy it several months ago. It's no PTI, but it is a solid lead-in to the main event.
But that's with Max. For crying out loud, pay Max or get a better host soon. Max, take the money. Anyone...just save us.

I read in Wednesday's USA Today that ESPN announced they were parting ways with Kellerman. He wanted a raise to $850,000 a year and they passed. He is expected to go to Fox Sports. It did not say if stat boy will be the permanent replacement.

Unbelievable. Depending on what they were paying him previously, I'd probably pass as well. When you go into negotiations with ESPN, you'd better seriously consider your options. I don't think they are in a position to have to bend very much.
Reali cannot continue as host for much longer. Hopefully, they'll be finding a more suitable replacement shortly.

02-13-04, 04:02 PM
Well that sucks big time. I guess I was right to remove ATH from my season pass list the other day. If ESPN wasn't going to match Fox Sports' offer and didn't want Stat Boy to be the permanent host, you'd think they would have tried out some other hosts of the past two weeks.
You'd think with the extra money the network held on to by ditching Playmakers they could have given Kellerman a raise.

For those uncomfortable with Reali continuing as host, the show's website offers some hope. It blurbs Stat Boy as the current moderator.
I wish the best to Kellerman, and if Fox Sports was legitmately offering that kind of money, I can't blame him for asking ESPN to match. But I'm sure ESPN feels that they offer more than money when compared to FSN and they don't feel much pressure in these situations.

Yep. No more ATH, no more Friday Night Fights, no more EXPN.com column or chats. The only thing we can hope for is if Kornheiser and Wilbon invite him over for Five Good Minutes after some important boxing match.

It looks like Kellerman's new show will start in mid-April on Fox Sports Net. From EMOnline:
Kellerman to Host Fox Sports Net Show: Fox Sports Net has hired ESPN's Max Kellerman, to host a daily 30-minute talk and interview show. Mr. Kellerman's FSN show is scheduled for a mid-April launch. Mr. Kellerman had been host of ESPN's "Around the Horn" and a studio analyst for "Friday Night Fights" on ESPN2.

FNF's ratings are already sliding as it is, and Max was a big reason why the program for lasted this long. In fact, I mostly tuned in just for the news with Max & Brian rather than the fights.
As for a replacement for Max, try Pedro Fernandez, the Ringtalk guy. I could live with that.

My vote would go to Woody Paige as host that guy is really funny and would no doubt get the last word in an arguement with the other talking heads although the disembodied voice comes in a close second. One last note get rid of stat boy he is just irritating and he works too hard to make people laugh.

What I don't like about Stat Boy hosting ATH is that it's exactly the same as when Max hosted, right down to the "these 4 things I know are true" intro. I think he should've tried to make the show his more, rather than just be Max, Jr.
