New Wilco Album -- A Ghost Is Born -- June 8, 2004

I was waiting for Penny Lane to post this (it's her story, after all), but the 72-hour grace period has lapsed.

Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune reports that the next Wilco album will be released June 8.

A short story from TMT on this is linked below:

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/2004_02_...70998074667950

Very much looking forward to this album...

A friend told me this on Friday night - I expect TMT and PFM will have more interesting things to say tomorrow morning.

Wilco - "A Ghost is Born" Release Info

That next record (or should we say "cd"?) is now entitled "A ghost is born" and will, if the schedule holds, be released by Nonesuch in North America on June 8 and their affiliated labels virtually everywhere else in the world that same week. The track listing is as follows:

At least that's what you said
Hell is
Chrome
Spiders (kidsmoke)
Muzzle of Bees
Hummingbird
Handshake drugs

Company in my back
I'm a wheel
Wishful thinking
Late greats
Theologians
Less than you think
-edit-

The only song I think I remember is "Handshake Drugs" (from the wonderful More Like the Moon EP for those that took advantage of that ANNOYING ENHANCED FORMAT). Penny Lane, what is that live track you heard? "Muzzle of Bees?"

??? What was wrong with the MP3s on the Wilco site? I had no problem downloading and playing them.

No, no. I just hate enhanced cds. I downloaded the mp3s off the site and they worked just fine. I just hate that every time I try to play Yankee Hotel Foxtrot on my computer, it goes through that damn intro.

Hold down Shift as you close the CD tray.

I've heard "Muzzle of Bees." I think I have a live version floating around here somewhere, if you want me to send it to you (slsk). I have a few of the others, too.

I just checked; I have live version of "Muzzle of Bees," "Company in my Back," "Late Greats," and "Spiders (kidsmoke)."

How's this one supposed to sound? Are they continuing the "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" style or doing something completely different? Either way, I'll check it out.

"Hold down Shift as you close the CD tray."

Eoooooohhhh...you are in soooo much trouble for trying to circumvent the CDs engineered software. You're in violation of the DMCA. The RIAA is flying to your house right now.

J/K - But due to the DMCA this HAS happened to a college student just a few months ago. Don't know where it went but last I had heard the company that had it's copy protection software circumvented was sueing.

Just trying to enlighten a few of this abomination and how ridiculously it can be applied.

Rant over. Definately picking up the new Wilco!!

I've only heard 3-4 songs, but they sounded more like straight up rock. I'd be really surprised if the new CD sounded anything like YHF, since Wilco has pretty much reinvented themselves on every CD they've put out so far. But on the other hand, how many times can a band really reinvent their sound? So it should be interesting, and I'm really psyched for it...

It seems like I remember Tweedy saying in an interview that he wasn't going to TRY to build on YHF, that it was too much pressure. I wouldn't mind if they did something different, though--I've loved everything they're put out to date, so I don't think this should be much different.

Wilco posted a new (old) song ("Cars Can't Escape") for download on their site from YHF sessions. Good stuff.

Also, I'm apparently a little late in the game in getting some of the 21-track YHF Demos. Some really good stuff there as well. Too bad I can't seem to locate more than a few tracks from it...

And, unsurprisingly, neither of them are in Phoenix. (They're deliberately going out of their way to Tucson, waving hello to Phoenix from the tour bus...) I'm guessing that they'll make it back to Phoenix as part of a bigger tour after the album is released, but it's still disappointing they're skipping it this time around...

I downloaded AGIB this morning, and I'm mixed on it right now. I'm a huge Wilco fan and it hasn't really grabbed me and said "WOW!" yet. But there is some really amazing stuff going on. Like a cross between YHF and Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

It's on soulseek.

I've heard "A Ghost Is Born" as well, and as is usually the case it will take time to grow on you.

It's Wilco, so it's not going to be Top 40 radio joints that jump out at your ears.

There is a neat 10-minute track called "Kidsmoke" that has quite a lengthy instumental section which I really enjoyed.

I'll definitely be purchasing this one when it lands in stores.

I've seen Wilco twice on the road and the last time they played Stubb's in Austin. Go see them if you live nearby any of the stops. In fact, the last time I saw them it was the first time they played as a quartet without Jay Bennett. Apparently, they've rearranged the lineup again and LeRoy Bach is gone.
