Illinois had a huge win at Indiana last night even though they played one of the worst halves of basketball I've ever seen in the first half. Hopefully this is the win that gets them on a roll.

With talk like that, you'd better show up here tomorrow night if the Heels run them off the court. Roy outcoached him last March, we'll see if the Rat can get revenge.

 @ ESPN's feature on the Duke-UNC rivalry on SportsCenter, with Stuart Scott commentating. Stu must have put the piece together himself, as it showed like 10+ UNC victories over the years vs. like 2 for Duke

It wasn't pretty, but it was a win for the Terps. They continue to struggle offensively but they played great defense. It was fitting that they sealed the game on a steal by Straw. Gilchrist had a great game. I am really starting to like Mike Jones too.

The funny thing is that considering the 1st half of the conference schedule was stacked against MD (3 home vs 5 away), 3-5 is about what I expected from this team. If they go 4-4 the rest of the way, 7-9 should be good enough for them to clinch a bid as I believe the ACC will get 7 invites.

State pulled off a great comeback at home vs Wake. They were down 16 vs Wake early in the 2nd half. No big run or anything as it took them nearly 13 minutes to come back. They took the lead and held on. State goes to 6-2 halfway through the conference season and is definitely the biggest surprise of the ACC so far.

I don't know how much Roy outcoached him as Kansas definitely had better and more experienced talent last season.

Yep, ugly but it's a road win and they needed to steal one after losing to NC State at home last Sunday.

Jones, IMO, is the most talented player on the team. He's their next big star IMO. He lit it up the one game he got signficant playing time. Granted it was against crappy as UMES, but he still shot lights out, got some good boards and played good D.

WVU has been playing surprisingly well of late. I really thought any chance for even the NIT went out the window when their best player was dismissed from the team.

But they've played pretty well without him, including beating Seton Hall last night, and are at 12-7 and 4-4 in the Big East. So they need to go 2-6 the rest of the way to ensure a .500 record after the conference tourney and thus be NIT eligble.

Heartbreaking loss for Carolina. A game where Reddick is neutralized like that, you gotta have.

I was disappointed that they didn't go after She. Williams and try and pick up fouls #4 and 5. And, obviously, the drive by Duhon should have been picked up.

Well, congrats to the Devils. Another ACC championship. Neither team played their best ball tonight, hopefully they'll bring their a-games next month.

For the Heels, next up is Wake, @ Wake. 3-6 in the league is a scary thought. But realistic, it is.

I am not blaming the calls for the loss as Duke certainly played well, but seeing Duke play in person gives a new perspective on how much Krzyzewski berates the refs up and down the floor. Even when Duke got favorable calls on defense, he would yell at the refs as they made their way down the floor for Duke's offensive possession. I realize that is not saying anything college basketball fans do not already know, but it is pretty ridiculous to see a highly praised "class act" do it that often.

Tommy_Harn
02-06-04, 09:48 AM
K has always done that. That's his thing. One of his stars, Deng, was lying on the ground in pain. He was staring down the ref rather than tending to his player.

Of course, it has been successful. While I don't feel biased officiating came in to play last night at all, ask any Maryland fan about the 2001 National Semi-final. Or, ask any ACC fan about any charge that Battier drew his entire career. About half of them were bogus.

Red Dog
02-06-04, 09:58 AM
Yeah - I think the officiating was just plain bad overall - no bias.

True.

You know the officiating's bad when even Billy Packer was calling out the refs. And noticing fouls by Carolina that weren't called. what's happened this year -- either they're too whistle happy or blind. Also, HTF did May score 15? He looked like crap. But they did a good job of shutting down Redick. He couldn't even get a pick to get an open look. Somebody's going to review this tape for some D lessons.

Another one bites the dust at Mizzou

Missouri dismisses Pulley from team
Associated Press

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Point guard Randy Pulley was dismissed from the Missouri basketball team Friday, the school's athletic department said.

"Randy has been dismissed from our squad and will transfer from Mizzou at the end of this semester," coach Quin Snyder said in a statement. "We will help him in any way we can, and we wish him well in the future."

Pulley was suspended indefinitely before Saturday's 62-53 victory over Kansas State, after missing practices on Thursday and Friday.

He dressed but did not play in Missouri's game last Wednesday, an 83-70 loss at Colorado.

Pulley, a junior college transfer who became eligible at the semester break, had started five games and was averaging 1.6 points and 2.2 assists.

At the Halfway Point

All-ACC team

Chris Duhon, Duke (10.1 ppg, 6.9 apg, 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio): Stats aren't sexy, but he leads, defends, distributes. Coaches love him. Just watch last play vs. UNC, and you'll understand.

Julius Hodge, N.C. State (17.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 50.2 field goal percentage): Wolfpack's heart and soul ranks in ACC's top 10 in scoring, rebounding, assists, FG percentage, free throw percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Rashad McCants, North Carolina (19.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 47.7 FG pct.): Moodiness? Who cares? Leads the league in scoring, and is starting to guard opponents better.

Tim Pickett, Florida State (16.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg): Shot selection has improved, and so has team. Has carried surprising Seminoles with second-half surges, fiery attitude.

J.J. Redick, Duke (16.1 ppg, 44.3 three-point pct., 97.4 FT pct.): Maybe the single most dangerous offensive weapon in the league. Making an astonishing 50 percent of three-pointers in league games.

Freshman of the Year

Chris Paul, Wake Forest: Duke's Luol Deng does a bit of everything, but Paul has earned the Demon Deacons' point guard duties, and therefore has the fate of his team in his hands. Exceptionally mature, he trails only two seniors -- FSU's Nate Johnson and Duhon -- in assist-to-turnover ratio, and is averaging 5.4 assists, more than any freshman in the nation.

Coach of the Year

Herb Sendek, N.C. State: Who, other than Hodge, can you name from this team? Yet at the midway point, the Wolfpack is in second place, 6-2 in the league, two games ahead of the teams tied for third. State does the little things -- such as leading the nation in free throw shooting -- to win. Bashing Sendek is as popular as sipping sweet tea in Raleigh, but he must be doing something right. This, by the way, isn't an easy category to determine.

Leonard Hamilton has FSU staring at its first NCAA tournament bid since 1998. And though he certainly has plenty of talent to work with, Mike Krzyzewski has coached Duke to a perfect first half despite playing five of their eight league games on the road.

Best Game

How do you choose? North Carolina and Wake Forest kicked off the conference season with an absurd triple-overtime classic. Maryland and UNC ran each other silly in College Park. Florida State came from 24 down to beat Carolina. Yet Thursday night's 83-81 Duke victory at UNC -- in overtime, after two game-tying three-pointers, decided on Duhon's game-winning drive with 6.5 seconds left -- was the perfect way to end a wild first half of the season.

Five Second-Half Questions

1. Is Duke championship caliber? The Blue Devils' supremacy in the ACC is hard to argue, and they may play the best perimeter defense in the nation. Duke is always talented but hasn't advanced past the round of 16 since 2001. This group can, and should, return to the Final Four.

2. Can Maryland extend the string? The Terrapins have been to 10 straight NCAA tournaments but have some work to do to make it 11. They would be helped by holding serve at home -- beating FSU, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest and Virginia; improving their free throw shooting, which is ranked 311th in the nation; and taking care of the ball.

3. Can Pete Gillen survive? The swoon is on in Charlottesville, where Virginia must beat N.C. State at home today to provide any indication of life. Gillen, in his sixth season with the Cavaliers, is 37-51 in ACC games and has yet to win a game in the ACC tournament. Seven years remain on his contract. Will he fulfill them?

4. What to make of North Carolina? The talent is there. The depth is there. What gives? Point guard Raymond Felton must begin making better decisions and knocking down more shots, and the Tar Heels have to improve defensively. But this won't be easy. The second-half schedule provides five road games, beginning today at Wake Forest. This team beat Connecticut and lost to Clemson. Anything can happen -- including missing the NCAA tournament for the third straight season.

5. Can seven teams make the NCAA tournament? It's never happened before in the ACC. It could in a month. Yes, someone -- UNC, Wake Forest, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland -- could stumble and bumble in the second half. But it seems unlikely. If three teams finish 8-8 and another 7-9, can you leave any of them out?

Craziest Quote

"I think we're the best team in the country -- hands down."

-- UNC's Rashad McCants, immediately after the Tar Heels lost to Duke to finish the first half of the season 3-5 in ACC play

Yeah, Rashad, UNC is the best.

I think Pickett would MVP of the league through the 1st half of the season. Nobody else on FSU is in the top-25 in scoring. The UNC/Wake game was definitely the best game of the year - maybe the best regular season game I've ever seen.

Wisconsin looks like they're asleep. Their lack of depth depth is starting to catch up with them. Tucker is out for the year with his foot, Freddie Owens is playing hurt, and Boo Wade is suspended for choking his gf.

This would be a pretty big loss for them if they can't come back since they still have to play Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan St all on the road.

I wish I had the pac 10 game on ABC. I've got the cusa heavyweight matchup of DePaul and Marquette-ohbfrank- Southern Illinois, who should be ranked, is playing at Creighton on ESPN2.

Way to twist that knife to make the loss hurt even worse for Wildcat fans ;)

In other news: the Big Ten is probably the worse I've seen since 94-95. On certain nights some of the teams could be called good, but that's about it. And, although I didn't think it was possible, the Big 10 refs are actually worse than ever. Inconsistent, overworked, overweight and out of shape (surprising since they all carry gigantic chips on their shoulders the entire game). Maybe conferences should switch refs every few years so others can experience the joy of the two Teds (Hilary and Valentine) and Ed "I'll 'T' you up if I feel you're smiling too much" Hightower.

Big win for UNC. I thought they were going to blow another lead like they did at FSU.

I think the game was more of a sign of Wakes futility than the Holes playing a great game. Sadly, this will keep the most overrated team in the country just that, overrated.

Meanwhile, NC State continues to impress, with another big road win against Virginia (ok, it is Virginia, a team at the bottom of the ACC, but we all know that any road win in the ACC is big). Assuming the Pack can defend the home floor against FSU on Tuesday, next Sunday's game at home against Duke will be HUGE.

Maybe they're a little overrated because they play an up-tempo style that is exciting to watch, but I'd imagine that some of these highly ranked teams in other weaker conferences will be exposed as over-rated once tourney time comes. I'm pretty sure some of these teams would love to boost wins against UConn, Ga. Tech, Wake Forest, Illonois and N.C. State.

I don't know too many people who would call Carolina the most over-rated team in the country. Except maybe a Dook or State fan who doesn't know what they're talking about.

 I was so glad when Richmond moved to the Atlantic 10.

And, not that many people care, but Richmond beat Duqesne last night, 71-51.

Big win today by Illinois at Minnesota.

Sets up a big game Tuesday night in Champaign against Michigan St. Illinois needs it to have a decent chance at a piece of the Big 10 title. If MSU wins they should coast the rest of the way to the title outright.

Solid win for the Terps to complete a nice week - breaking serve on the road and holding serve at home.

They (mostly McCray) did a great job on clamping down on Pickett after his insane start. I certainly hope Pickett is okay after that rough dive into the bench near the end. Hate to see a player of his caliber get hurt. An overall good effort by the Terps - it seems like everyone who played contributed in a positive fashion.

The Terps need to get out of their scoring funk in second half of games. They could have put FSU away early in the second half.

Good effort by the Terps. The finally played hard. They were sloppy and missed several chances to put FSU away, but at least they played with a lot of heart and effort, which has been missing in a lot of games this year (namely against NC State last week).

Hopefully they can keep it up and win the rest of their home games, and maybe steal one on the road at NC State. That should be enough to get them in the tourney.
